Sherry-Drinking Mice of Tío Pepe – Jerez de la Frontera, Spain - Gastro Obscura

"While exploring the storage cellars at Tío Pepe, one of the most prominent wineries in Jerez de la Frontera, you may come across a mouse or two imbibing a glass of the distiller’s renowned sherry as part of their daily indulgence. As the story goes, one of the winery workers had a soft spot for the often unwelcome cellar guests. He found it unfair that he could drink all the sherry he wanted while the mice could not. To rectify this, he built a little ladder leading up to a glass full of sherry. This way the mice could have their fill without him having to share his drink with the rodents. A second, not as fun story suggests the sherry was placed out for the mice to keep them from nibbling away at the Solera (on-the-ground) casks that are kept in the bodega, the area where the alcohol is aged and stored. The tradition continues and everyday a small glass of sherry is placed on the floor. A tiny ladder lets the mice access their boozy treat. People, too, have been enjoying the local sherry for years. The history of winemaking in the Iberian peninsula dates back to the Phoenicians. Jerez de la Frontera, a small Spanish city steeped in sherry culture, plays host to some of the most prominent sherry-making bodegas in the world. Know Before You Go Tours of the bodega can be booked in advance from the winery's website" - Jeremy D, aRedLetterLife

Great tour around the premies of Bodega Tio Pepe and the González Byass Sherry house. Started with a train ride around the park and buildings and then a guided tour in a lot of the historical buildings of the wine yard. We ended with a Sherry tasting with some small tapas. I recommend the large package to experience it all, it was so interesting. In the end you passing thru the gift shops with the full sherry assortment and more. I would definitely come back if I’m visiting Jerez again.

A great experience. Our guide was excellent and the tour was very educational. Well organised and plenty of time allowed for picture taking and questions. The tasting and tapas were perfect. Recommend going for the 4 wines and tapas option.

Didn't try any other Bodega Tours but maybe should have done a bit more research. Maybe it was our guide but didn't feel as though we learnt much about the why or how of Sherry production. Also thought the 'tapas' represented very poor value in a city of great Tapas. €100 for a family of 4 (obviously no Sherry for the kids) seemed a lot

As such a big name, I was nervous to book the tour as thought it might be a bit basic. I was recommended though so went for it and so glad that I did. It’s a beautiful set up with whole streets, amazing buildings including gardens which you see on a cute little tourist train and the ‘cathedrals’ are fascinating. There were a lot of people for the English tour which they managed really well by splitting into two groups. I was so very lucky to have Alejandro as a guide. He answered all questions patiently with really good knowledge. Often on tours you feel like the guide is reading a script and this was definitely not the case. It was well explained without being too basic but covered essentials. It is made really special with the history of the place and famous people signing barrels. My one big criticism is that there is one tasting area for all groups. It was far too noisy to hear the explanations of the wines tasted and the serving was rushed with no opportunity to see the bottles. That said, Alejandro took extra time with any questions and I didn’t feel at all rushed. A massive thanks and highly recommend a visit. I did the tour for 27 euros with 4 tastings which I recommend. The quality was excellent.

I don't understand why some people have given such negative reviews. I suspect they are just grumpy folk with a short fuse. Our couple of hours were great. Started off with a little train ride (actually bus pulling mini wagons, but still cute) around the grounds (a huge plot they own in the centre of town next to the cathedral) (I have given 4* instead of 5* as I would have preferred to stroll around the wonderfully ornate gardens on my own, at my own pace, but this isn't an option thus remove 1*). Then a little walking tour through the old factory and storage rooms. Our guide was gentle and informative. Ending up with the tasting of 4 different sherries. I would recommend the max tasting package. For the extra €5 you get two extra glasses of sherry, well worth it IMHO. All in all, a great way to get gently pickled and taste some great drinks.

DO NOT waste your time on this bodega! Their wine tasting tour is a real scam and a tourist trap. First of all, if you are wondering, bodega is not a winery, it’s a wine storage place, so nothing interesting to see there, other than barrels with wine. Secondly, we bought a 32euro/person package (most expensive one). For this price, they are promising 4 wine samples paired carefully with tapas. We expected a generous and delicious selection of tapas, but got none of that - only 2 small slices of cheese, 4 olives, peanuts and cheap crackers. Yes, that’s all you get for 64 euros! Not enough to even call it a snack. We were so mad after waiting 4 hours to do this tour. So basically, each 1-2 oz sample of wine is gonna cost you 8 euro. Please don’t waste your time visiting this place and take your money elsewhere!

The tours are excellent, friendly helpful guides. Suggest buying the 4 wine tasting as it's worth the money. Our guide was amazing, however to be 5 stars they could reduce tour sizes (30 per group) so they could attend to the tasting better and be a bit less rushed.

I would not even give this place 1 star, it’s not an option. We planned a day for the sherry triangle (or part of it) tasting, experience , knowledge,…. Excited for what we would learn . However, we started with Gonzalez Byass aka Teo Pepe We signed up for the English tour with the best sherry & tapa option There were a lot of folks for the tour so they spit it , the 1st guide seemed really pushy so we waited for the second They announced: ” we are waiting for a few to arrive that have reserved and then we will start.” I thought , why would you tell us that ?!!! Instead of “ we will began shortly” This should have been a red flag for what would be… I just don’t even know how to express enough that our tour guide should “never” be a tour guide!!! Or , even have a job where she deals with the public… ever!!!! We had the second English tour on 03 January 2024 I am pretty sure she was able to be assertively negative to each and everyone of us. I truly believe she hated us. Which made me hate this brand!!!! We finally get to the tasting and tapas I am excited because I had studied and learned how well sherry paired with food Not so It was so bad So disappointed We had set out for our day… …. our vacation, our time, our money, … To have an amazing experience and instead We were beat up We never went to another sherry bodega either We were done Chalk it up for the worst day of our vacation!!!! I highly recommend , if you are still interested in visiting a sherry bodega after reading this Do Not Visit González Byass / Teo Pepe!!!! No one should spend their vacation, their time, their money to be treated like we were treated ( on vacations we visit distilleries, wineries, breweries & other production tours known for the area. This Is by far the worst tour !)
