"Bode’s General Store Established in 1919, O’Keeffe’s favorite café and grocery store still has pride of place in the center of Abiquiu. Stock up on supplies (they have everything from top-shelf liquor to handmade local soap) or dine on New Mexican staples like a green chile cheeseburger, posole soup, or a smothered enchilada. Georgia O’Keeffe biographies are also available. — By Edmund Vallance"

Google
I had the pleasure of stopping by Bode’s General Store, and it was such a delightful find! This cute and quaint general store has everything you could need, whether you're looking for snacks, unique novelty items, or a quick bite to eat. The little nook serving hot food was a great touch, offering tasty options that hit the spot. One thing I really appreciated was how clean and well-maintained everything was, including the restroom—a huge plus when you're on the road! The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it a perfect pit stop during any road trip. If you’re passing through, I highly recommend taking a break at Bode’s General Store. It’s a charming spot with great offerings and a friendly vibe. I'll definitely be stopping by again!

What is happening out here... this place is nuts! I Freaking Love Bodes! You have to stop in if you're passing by! It is a must! We popped in and left with gas, chupa chups, zots, a jade bracelet, and a new pocket knife. BUT we could have left with so much more... Seriously, folks... stop in... I guarantee you will find something you forgot you needed. I can't not describe to you unexpected and awesome this place is :)

Google
Gas is fairly priced, but nothing else is. It's definitely worth rolling into Espanola to make your purchases. This can of cashews is a prime example, a 12.8oz can for $13.69. This same can at Walmart is $6.72, less than HALF the cost that Bode's is willing to gouge you for. That one purchase alone would cover the gas to the Walmart in Espanola, which is only 23 miles away. They also had a pint-sized Ben and Jerry's for over $9. A PINT, which is only $4.48 at Walmart. Ridiculous...

This place has a little of everything plus excellent burritos.

Very unique general store, I love stopping by here every time I travel through Abiguiu. They have everything from fresh fruits to liquor. Bode's offers pre-made food. The burritos are horrible, if your hungry, try the grill outside.

After traveling all day I stopped in to stock up on some supplies. Definitely was a good variety, over priced but the only game in town. I ended up buying 48 dollars worth of groceries, not to mention the gas. I went out to the truck and forgot to get change for a twenty so I could put my campsite fee in the drop box. I went back in the store and asked if I could get change for a twenty(2 tens). The manager came out of the back room and said "you need to buy something" I said i just bought 48 dollars worth. The manager smirked and said I needed to buy something else and walked off. Left w the impression that this store only cares about ducking every dollar out of tourist pockets.

My boyfriend and I go to bode's all the time and all of the stuff is great but one person that works in the kitchen who's black and wears a pink bandana (I was told her name was "Thaddine" or something by the staff) kept on staring at me and harassing me. Well today when we went to go get breakfast and coffee we sat down and she mumbled insults to my boyfriend and I and slammed her laptop and walked to the other side of the dining area. After my boyfriend went to the bathroom and I went to go get a refill on my hot chocolate, she looked at me and said you got to pay for that refill (which I was going to?) and she went around the store telling everyone how I was apparently not going to pay for the refill and bad-mouthing me. I talked to the bode's staff directly about it, and everything was fine. I don't know what her problem was to be honest, I was just trying to eat breakfast.

Google
I love this place! Everything about it! The food court is outstanding. The kitchen staff are friendly and know how to whip out chili food. 😋 As a Native, I know chili and so do they. The cashiers are so amazing. It is a very busy place and they are all smiling inspite of some mean spirited tourists. They have the best gifts. Can you tell I love it! I travel through there twice a month and I stop each time. The best! The books are inspiring.

Yelp
First things First: Great Bathrooms Ok had to get that done, badly. Funky Funkability is the theme here: pair a nice wine with your pork rind burrito, speak to strange statues and read their runes, fuel up the car and check out the ripe avocados. Get WHATEVER you need before hitting the beach, the trail, or the road. It's here!

Yelp
This is such a charming store! They seem to have a little bit of everything! Food, beer, fishing supplies, gifts, convenience store items, school supplies etc... as well as a little sitting area for eating and snacking with friends. They have apparently been there over 100 years too. It's definitely worth a stop if you're driving by. It has a nostalgic and charming atmosphere. The staff were friendly too

Yelp
Some of the best to go food I have ever had. We are staying near Abiquiu and had heard great things about this general store. They have a variety of burritos and different specials every day. The carne adovada burrito was the best I've had. The green chile beef and redshile chicharone were both delicious as well. One night we got the shepherds pie and baked ziti, delicious!! We are trying not to go every day because we have already gained 5 pounds.

Yelp
Great hot street burritos and breakfast burritos made with choice of green or red. Perfect for grab and go. They are hot and ready. Good choice for traveling food and picnic breakfasts.

Yelp
Driving in New Mexico this is a awesome General store. We stop here on our way to Pagosa Springs! The store has clean restrooms! And the store has some of the most interesting things to buy! Local goods! Art work and unique gifts! This place you'll find old school candies and toys! They have baked good and a cafe we haven't tried yet but food smells yummy.
google avatar

Cathy C.

Yelp
This store is run by the nicest people in the world! I recently was having tire issues on my car and stopped at Bodes because I really needed help before driving up to Pagosa Springs in a snowstorm. They checked my tires twice and even called a family member to come and help me before sending me on my way. Such a warm feeling to know there are still such kind and generous people in the world. And it's a great market, too! Their burritos are famously delicious.

Yelp
Bode's is a little oasis in the desert. Everything you need and some things you just want!

Yelp
I love this little general store. I always find great gifts there. They are kind and helpful. Have let me fill my H20 jugs when dispersed camping near by. A bit more pricey than I'd prefer but nothing else is really around, so it's worth it. It's a must stop each time I'm in the area.

Yelp
On our way back to Burque from a weekend get away to the wolf creek mountain for some boarding action, we stopped at this little shop for a bathroom break. I was going to wait in the car but then I saw what looked like it a little retail shopping area through the front doors. Second thought, I'll go inside and look around while you use the bathroom babe. This review is strictly on the store. What a fun little place. They had a variety of things available. Groceries, some fresh produce, lanterns, knives, cast iron cookware, lotions, soaps, cards, gifts, bags, bait and even a little eatery. They were closed by the time we strolled through, but I bet its a popular place to eat. They had a little dining room for the food patrons and everything. This general store has it all. It's worth the stop to peruse the aisles if you are driving through the area, its a nice break from the windshield. Had my on some really cool reusable bags made out of recycled materials. Hoping they are still there the next time I find myself driving through Abiquiu.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a really nice place to stop if you need to get a quick snack/food or use the bathrooms since they're very clean. I wish the hot food area/restaurant area was open but I think it's still closed because of COVID. If you're in the area camping or visiting Abiquiu Lake this is a nice place to stop and get supplies or gas.

Yelp
GEORGIA O'KEEFFE? Hang on I'll get to her. . . . YOU NEED HUNTING, CAMPING AND FISHING SUPPLIES? Well this is the place . . . THE ONLY PLACE! BODE'S GENERAL MERCHANDISE is the only store for 35 miles in any direction . . . and, in a couple of directions, it probably is even further than 35 miles! Remember those country stores in the movies with the OLD GUYS sitting around a fireplace or wood stove in rocking chairs "CHEWING & SPITTING" and "SPINNING YARNS?" I swear they filmed all those scenes at Bode's! Walk in any day of the week (oh, wait, I think they are closed on Sundays!) and you'll find those guys spinning fishing & hunting stories from Abiquiu Lake, or the mountains around Chama - both just a few miles up the road. Bode's sells just about a little of everything you could possibly want and have been doing so since 1919. AN ORIGINAL STORE. Right out of the movies. A fun place to explore. A place to spin yarns. Not your usual tourist trap, but a real Northern New Mexico COUNTRY STORE that serves the residents of the small community of Abiquiu and surrounding farms & ranches. (My favorite T-Shirt is from Bode's. You can order them online.) Plus they have fishing, camping and hunting supplies for the outdoorsmen headed into the GREAT WILDERNESS OF NORTHERN NEW MEXICO. And . . . . . just so you don't get the idea that this place is TOTALLY REMOTE, and who in the world would EVER want to stop or shop here . . . . this little merchantile is directly ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE HOME OF ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST ARTISTS: GEORGIA O'KEEFFE. Up on the hill above Bode's, facing the Plaza, was her principal residence. She did have a small summer home up the road about 13 miles, but the home across from Bode's, was where she spent most of her time. Bode's is in God's Country . . . or at least it was Georgia O'Keeffe's country. Just look at her landscape paintings . . . then step out of the door at Bode's and look around . . . . they are one in the same. www.bodes.com STOP AND SIT A SPELL!

Yelp
I saw Bode's on the TV program with George Motz, like a lot of people who have written reviews. I love really great burgers, especially those that have not been fancied up with kale fed organic fat-free beef and toppings that cost more than the meat. We called ahead to be sure they were open because the previous day we called Sugar's Barbecue and Burgers in Velarde and apparently they are seasonal, since no one answered the phone all day. Four of us made the reasonable drive from Santa Fe and it was worth it. This was a great burger. As others have mentioned the ordering process is a little strange. You go to the window in the back and place your order. The guy who waited on us was very helpful and they are flexible on how you get your burger. He gives you a slip or two (separate one for the local beer) that you take to the cashier towards the front and pay. Then you take your paid slip back to the food window and they make your order and deliver it to your table. Our green chile cheeseburgers were excellent, seasoned well with a very good grill crust. These are cooked on the flat top. The patty is 8 oz which is plenty big enough and is flattened somewhat so that it cooks better than larger thicker patties. You don't order a level of doneness, but the meat was juicy and flavorful. It is topped with plenty of plain, chopped green chiles. I really enjoyed this and would make the drive from Santa Fe again. It is nice that they serve the Monk's Ale and other beers from Abbey Beverage Company. The Monk's Ale was very good with my burger. I should probably award five stars, but would like to have another one or two to confirm consistency.

Yelp
I am so happy to read some terrible reviews by certain "travelers" about Bode's. Hopefully lots of people will read these inane critiques and drive past it so that people like myself and the many locals who rely on it for so much can enjoy it all the more.! Though it would be hard to be more fond of this wonderful establishment and the humble, warm people who make their livelihood there.
google avatar

Maureen M.

Yelp
For what they do, Bodes does it quite well. Yes--a wonderful general store with everything from burgers to silk scarves. Friendly checkers and locals-- the nice woman ringing me up kindly corrected my incorrect pronunciation of "Abiquiu", and the gentleman in line behind us gave us directions to Ghost Ranch when he heard us saying our navigation had gone wonky.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
It's a very convenient and handy store. The prices aren't dirt cheap but they have such a wide selection of different items it's not too bad. If you go at the breakfast or lunch hour the burritos they have warmed up are pretty good

J O.

Yelp
I stopped by this place a few nights ago after watching a beautiful sunset at the lake. Upon entering the store the mid 40s dark haired woman working the cash register looks up and looks me in the eye and says nothing. When I went to ring up a few items I asked this same woman "how are you?" And she responds "I'm gonna need to see some ID's" and then proceeds to scan and examine the ID's with an air of suspicion. Everyone seems to love this place but next time I will keep on driving. Apparently this place is only welcoming to Cowboys and those of the like.

Yelp
Yo, a groc store/gas station getting 5* for food? Damn straight. Great breakfasts and a huge shout out to their scratch muffins. Simply outta sight. Chewy (in a great way) top and moist but not mushy interior. Pro Tip - Check "eat by" dates and get the latest expiring. Good coffee to wash em down and decent prices to boot. They did everthing a gas station could do to earn 5*. An easy rating

Yelp
This place was one disappointment after another. Read great reviews so we decided to stop here. We were planning on having a hot lunch, and it was closed. However, we saw they had cases of both hot and cold lunch items, including sandwiches, salads, burritos. Two members in our party opted for a roast beef sandwich, thinking it would be a safe option. The driest bread ever should have been the first clue to uncovering the cheese was completely molded. Both sandwiches were thrown away immediately; condition of the sandwiches made us weary to try the burrito. Decent bathrooms since there is no where else to stop along the route. Also disappointing that the ice cream shop was closed right now.

Yelp
What a great place! They have just about everything you might need --from fishing tackle to delicious wines!
google avatar

Nathan B.

Yelp
This place will surprise you. Very nice, people were friendly and had a great variety of things for purchase.
google avatar

Sirron B.

Yelp
This place is great had a good time here you can get barbecue ribs meatloaf roasted potatoes tamales chicken burritos all of that just to eat they have fishing tackle from lures to Bates to rods and reels. They also have gifts posters mugs Etc the people there are so friendly and so helpful they have a lot of local knowledge. This is right off of 84 look for the pink flamingo the store is very deceiving in size.

Yelp
Bode's is a good place to stop for a burger and snacks. It's a real old-time general store with everything from hats, shirts and beer to tools and groceries, utensils, postcards, Minnows (yes, bait!) and New Mexico memorabilia. There is even a gas station. It's a beautiful ride on Rt 84 and very near the Abiquiu Inn and Georgia O'Keefe's home and studio. It's actually between them and Abiquiu Lake. I had a fabulous Reuben sandwich and M had a green chili burger that was HOT! It's a simple menu but you'll be sure to find something you'll like. As long as your dog is on a leash, s/he is welcome.
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
Crowded, dirty restroom, and rude. Stopped by Bode's for a quick stop on a road trip. There are two bathrooms, but one is out of order and looks like it has been out of order for a long time. The remaining bathroom had a line of 4 people in front of me, which isn't the end of the world... however with how busy this store is, I was surprised they only have one toilet to share among all patrons. The only working bathroom was seriously filthy with an overflowing trash can. To its credit, the store itself has a good variety of snacks and drinks. Unfortunately, again, super busy with only one functioning cash register. While waiting in a line 8 people long, another employee walked up to a 2nd cash register behind the counter. I asked, "sir, is this register opening?" A woman stocking shelves behind me rudely answered for him, "NO ITS NOT". Overall, this is a store with good offerings. However, they appear to be understaffed which leads to terrible customer service, filthy bathroom, and also a loss of my business.

Yelp
Must stop! Yummy food, great convenience store and gift shop. In the summer, their malt shop is usually open with yummy frozen treats.
google avatar

Richard B.

Yelp
This store has a rich and long history. It is always clean and you are served by friendly and competent staff possessed of a customer-oriented culture created by the owner. It is a favorite haunt of locals for miles around and THE place for all last minute needs for visiting tourists. Parking has been expanded and there are plenty of gas (and two diesel) pumps open even after formal store hours. They have an in-store restaurant that is quite good. I rarely have a week when I am not there at least a couple of times. I have never been disappointed in any of its products or services. Two thumbs up for an original northern New Mexico general store icon.
google avatar

Delaine Z.

Yelp
What a great place to buy everything you might need. And I do mean everything. They have gasoline, pet food, fishing supplies, groceries (some vegan), sandwiches, clothing, and anything else you might need way out in a wilderness area. Good service, good stuff. You need to stop by if you're in the area. oh, and they have public restrooms.
google avatar

Crystal M.

Yelp
I LOVE this store. I live close enough now to be a frequenter of the Abiquiu area and on every adventure, a stop at the store is just as much a priority as the trailhead. For being in "the middle of nowhere" they have an amazing amount of good stuff. Huge selection of organic options. Their grocery buyer deserves a high five. Also pays to wander though their camping and pet section. This store can accommodate basically anything you may need while out on a road trip through the magical new mexican desert. And then some.

Rob G.

Yelp
This place is a local small community general store, cafe, and gas station. We stopped to try the burgers. Two Green Chile Cheeseburgers, and boy were they good. Talk about big, spicy (hot), and well seasoned. I usually don't like really spicy food but this was an exception. Locals and tourists stop here just for the food, and well worth it. If ever in the area stop and order something, you won't be disappointed by this family run business. For two hamburgers and soft drinks was $27.90, with tax and tip.

Terry G.

Yelp
The only store within mile but great supply of a variety of goods. AND fabulous breakfast burritos and chile cheese burgers.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Sadly, the regular weekend dinners that I bragged on required a lot of work to pull off, and were discontinued. I figured I should update my previous review. The dinners are sadly missed.
google avatar

Rusty K.

Yelp
Excellent green chili cheeseburger. This will be a place we stop coming thru from now on.
google avatar

Amy R.

Yelp
WHile I staying at a nearby spa, the hotel staff suggested lunch here. It was quite pleasant surprise. Good sandwich (I had the green chili philly, which was just spicy enough for me, followed by a fantastic slice of blueberry pie). They had a great array of religous toys (including a lunch pail with The Last Supper on it). We got a kick out of browsing through the merchandise.

Alice M.

Yelp
Good selection of fun stuff including gifts, wine, food/grocery items, hats etc!! Staff is consistently rude--definitely rancher mentality --if you ain't one of us, you suck. ‍

Yelp
Love Bode's . Great homemade bread On Friday's. Good burgers , lots of things a tourist can't live without!

Yelp
Driving through Abiquiu NM up U.S. 84, we stopped at BODE'S GENERAL STORE for lunch - and the food was Really Good! My wife ordered the Grilled 3-Cheese Sandwich with a side of French Fries. I ordered the Corned Beef Reuben with a side Salad. Both were very tasty and delicious - especially the crispy French Fries. The Reuben was perfectly balanced with corned beef, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing - very mouth-watering! Next time, I'll want the Green Chile Cheeseburger with French Fries, and try their Beer-on-Tap. After lunch, we enjoyed browsing around the Store to discover its impressive merchandise variety - everything from hot-sandwiches-to-go, beer and wine, camp cooking gear, fishing supplies, knives & axes, animal traps, rain ponchos & mosquito repellent, to an impressive array of fresh vegetables and snacks. A perfect oasis for campers and hikers - and collectors. Highly recommended.

Melissa M.

Yelp
This store has the best peach pie on earth!!! Not sure who makes them but they are to die for!! Sorry I forgot to take a photo so just trust me.
google avatar

Rick Y.

Yelp
Stopped here when passing through and thought to grab a "truck stop" lunch. We ordered a grilled chic and a "Cuben" sandwich to split and share. Chic came with a huge salad and the Cuban with a mound of fries. Well, tasty enough, but halfway through I had to stop because of all of the grease and grilled bread slathered in butter. Or it just may have been dipped in butter, who knows? Kind of strange that the fries were actually dry and extra crispy - a sign that the fryer is kept up to temperature. Can't actually say "Don't Bother" but be aware if you have allergies to excess liquid fat..... Or ask for dry bread on the grill? PS: if you are familiar with the traditional South Florida "Cuban Sandwich", this version is a different animal.

Paul P.

Yelp
Stopped in Bode's GS yesterday, a busy Saturday morning, on the rode to the Echo Amphitheater....our first time ever in this little gem of a store on a well traveled road. We were met at the door by a masked employee who was monitoring customer volume, making sure store was not over crowed. He was very courteous and welcoming. Our party of four spent roughly 15 minutes or so browsing....seemed to have all of the essentials. Snacks. Beverages. Even with limits on the number of customers allowed inside it felt crowded but that's me being subjective. Never really felt I was too close to anyone. Checking out was very quick. Despite having many customers my cashier was very personable. Only wish they had a better stock of their trademark Bode's short sleeve tees (Men's Large) in stock....cashier promised additional stock expected within a few days....giving me a good reason to return.
google avatar

Matt V.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and everything you need! Nice selection of gift things and just a neat spot to stop in for a bite from the road. Great selection of fishing supplies and some ammunition also.
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
First: Accept Bode's for what it is... a slice of (vanishing) northern New Mexico. As a one-time city slicker I appreciate the down-home vibe, people watching and the best red chile breakfast burrito anywhere in NM. The green chile cheeseburger rates right up there. You don't stop at Bode's for gourmet fine dining... just real (good) food prepared very well and at a great price. I also find a quick run through their gifts/books area is fun and quirky... there's always as a general store that something you've forgotten to bring with you.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Heading to Santa Fe from Colorado a stumbled on to this little gem. They have a burger that is featured on the food network. So I Had To try it. This thing was huge, biggest I have ate. It was very good. My girlfriend hot lasagna it was a huge portion also. Everything was delicious
google avatar

G D.

Yelp
This is such a quaint "general purpose" store, decent selection of groceries, necessities for the locals (livestock feed, etc) and a pleasant little gift area with a nice range of local flavor. We wanted the Hatch Chile burger... and to my delight they were willing to make with Turkey rather than beef. Coolest part was, when I said it would be "to go" because we were traveling with our dog, the man suggested I bring her in! There was a dining area off to the side and not only was our dog welcome, but the chef came over and fed her a biscuit! Bodes is the real deal. Don't miss it.
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
Just barely made it here before they closed at 3 pm on a Sunday afternoon. ordered the green chile cheeseburger and tater tots. This burger is huge! You could feed a family of four between the burger and the mountain of tots. My wife enjoyed the blood orange iced tea and the food was delicious! Very glad we went 30 miles out of our way to get these burgers. Looking forward to the next visit.
google avatar

Michele G.

Yelp
The only place to stop in Abiquiu...so good. I had the HUGE green chile cheeseburger with tots & it was on point. They were a bit busy when we were there but it was well worth the wait. Bode's pretty much has all your one stop needs. We will be back again for sure when traveling to Ghost Ranch or to the Monk's monastery. Good Job guys!
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
Don't let the name fool you because this store has the most amazingly delicious food. The cheeseburger is juicy, yummy and chocked full of fresh veggies including green chile peppers. My favorite is the grilled cheese sandwich toasted crunchy to the bite and full of yummy, gooey-cheeses ie, (Boars head) cheddar, muenster and pepper jack and topped off with Boars head bacon on sour dough bread. A nice assortment of wine, beer and sodas are at hand. Fresh veggies for sale as well if your feeling healthy. They bake fresh, delicious pastries, pies, muffins and cookies from scratch daily. If you need staple grocery items and travel gear they can also be found here. Hanging out with around the world travelers and locals makes this a quaint and exciting place to be. Don't pass by without stopping as it is situated between The Ghost Ranch and a mile from the Abiqui Inn in NM. Do I adore this place? Yes! Bodes.com
google avatar

Athena W.

Yelp
Oh for the good old days when Mr. Bode ran his store with grace, humor and stocked the shelves with real food. If you're on your way to Abiquiu lake or Ghost Ranch Bode's store is still convenient, if expensive. You can purchase wonderful enamel ware pots and dishes for your camping experience or chose from a great selection of cards to let everyone at home know what a great time you're having. The food selection is much bigger than other convenience stores. The locals still remember a time, just a few years ago, when we could ride our horse out to Bode's and have an organic meal with good conversation.
google avatar

Barb C.

Yelp
Only store around but really good nonetheless. Very crowded on a holiday weekend--people going to the lake I guess. We were never able to eat here, the restaurant always seemed to be closed when we came by. Still they had some hot meals to go which were actually good. We got a roast chicken and fresh tortillas and made wraps at our Airbnb. They also had green chile mac n cheese which the kids did not like but I did. Even the wrapped burgers were pretty good. We also got a slice of pie and some cookies--disappeared quickly so they must have been good. All kinds of stuff packed into this store! Very well curated.

Yelp
Long an institution in the village of Abiquiu, Bode's really is an excellent stop for near anything you think you might need (or even not need, but just want). With a week in Abiquiu recently, we sourced, on various visits, groceries, drink, baked goods, postcards, firewood, gas - stopped for sit down coffee, and a chat with the engaging staff. If you're in O'Keeffe country don't miss this local business with just about everything.
google avatar

CJ W.

Yelp
This place has it all. Everything you need for a last minute stop on the way to the lake or a weekend of camping in the mountains. Awesome deli with some of the best breakfast burritos around. Funny postcard and novelty section as well.
