"A boilermaker is a beer accompanied by a shot of whiskey—not exactly the most refined manner of drinking—so this bar in the CBD is far more stylish than it has any right to be. The room is warm and woodsy, with an absolutely mesmerizing number of bottles lined up behind the bar—the stools are the best place to be—and pleasing blues music emanating from the sound system. There are more than 900 whiskies, which range from $12 to $380. There are also 10 beer taps, and what comes out of them—craft beer from Australia and further afield—changes weekly. If that doesn’t quench your thirst, try one of the excellent cocktails, including an ultra-creative riff on a martini with tequila, vermouth, green chili liqueur, pear liqueur, and grapefruit oil." - Carrie Hutchinson

Bartender was very kind and knowledgeable on wide array of whiskeys / beers. I came here solo last night and this place made me feel quite welcomed! I witnessed one of the bartenders speaking in sign language to customers and letting them sample some of the craft beers.. it was a lovely sight to see. Definitely recommend this place!

Google
Very polite and friendly staff although it was packed on Friday night. Seating inside would have a different feeling. But I chose to be outside. I didn't try their food though.

Google
Excellent selection of rare craft beer and whiskies. Bartender was also helpful and professional. And as the name suggests, they’ve got a good recco of boilermakers. I would go back for a treat cos it is quite pricey.

Google
The vibe was A1, loved it. I asked for a scotch to my taste. Well sooo cool a beautiful scotch landed. A serious skill ☺️. Then randomly order a platter, well a solid taste experience. So thanks, honest but different. I will come back to fully experience this establishment.

Google
A perfect place for all beer lovers, since they specialize in all sorts of beers. The ambience was super chill and the staff highly helpful and friendly too. They do have cocktails as well, although if you are a wine lover maybe try somewhere else.

Google
This is an awesome place for a catch up with friends. I wish we had more people to sit in a booth. So warm, homey and comfy. The sirloin steak was done perfectly as per my wish. I told the bartender I wanted it medium rare but more on the rare side. He couldn't find a good option on the screen, but the steak came out exactly how I liked it!! Absolutely great job he did there⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Google
Went here on a whim and it was a fantastic choice. We were able to get a table without a reservation, the interior is very on theme and it was easy to have a conversation. They have a large variety of beers and whiskey, amongst other things, it’s on the pricier side but that’s to be expected. Tristan was our host and they were fantastic, the top quality service will make me come back here.

Amazing place with a very cool vibe. My wife even liked the whiskey I sampled!

Yelp
This was by far my favorite place to eat in Melbourne. If you're a fan of Malt Whiskies or craft beer and love quality meats, you need to go here. From the second I walked in, I was greeted in a very enthused way and throughout the night my waiter (sorry forgot your name!) walked me through all the different pairing options whether it was a triage of whiskey beer and an edible matching snack, or something to simply pair with my hangar steak. Most interesting thing he introduced me to was the bone marrow louge. Once you've eaten the marrow, they torch the bone to melt any leftover fats then have you hold it to your mouth while they pour a perfectly matched whiskey down it. It was amazing. Whether you want a full meal or just done good drinks, this place is perfect for it.

Yelp
"Hello my lovely" is how I was greeted... Wow! I'm glad I made the effort. this place You'll enjoy this one... Ya gotta check this one out

Yelp
We loved this bar! Probably our favorite in all of Melbourne! Great beer list. Lots of options for whiskey and gin and vodka and wine. They had our favorite gin, four pillars. Great atmosphere. Love the decor. Ordered the terrine and enjoyed it.

Yelp
This place was amazing. I bookmarked Boilermaker while researching cool bars in Melbourne before I left for Australia. 100% did not disappoint. It's easily found, facing the streets & not down some laneway Americans don't understand. The menu is fantastic in that it changes whenever they run out of one of the craft beers or bottles of fine whiskey. They rewrite or create new Boilermaker recipes belased on what's in that morning. All the staff were dressed adorably in semi-vintage camping looks... I can't think of any other way to describe it. The interior is so magical, somewhere between a library and a patio garden. There was only a table or two open when we arrived and lucked out on a booth. There was a cute gas camping light on the table that I loved visually but could have done without the smell. They also gave my table of 3 all a free sip of a magical, fruit infused whiskey cocktail because there was a Birthday at the table. I ordered a Boilermaker, which consists of a special beer, an aged whiskey and a paired nibbled snack. I chose the Bittersweet Symphony Boilermaker. It was a Danish ale, a delicious 16yr old whiskey and some dried fruit candies. A fantastic pairing served on a cute wooden plank. For the amount of drink, it was a good deal at $29 considering a single whiskey can be $15-20 Down Under. 100% recommend.

Yelp
Great place for a drink, particularly large selection of bourbon / whiskey. I was impressed when the book shelf door opened to reveal a large bar with cool decor and a bustling vibe. It's definitely male heavy, perhaps given the whiskey menu. They serve food as well and folks sharing our table had some good dishes. I would definitely pop back in for a drink as it was a fun experience.

Yelp
Were there with the busy late Friday night crowd, and as I'm just getting into my whisky and heard good things I was pretty excited to finally be popping in. Place is suitable dark and cool inside and the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. Of course I got a boiler-maker, which was a little pricier than I was expecting, but you get that when trying new whiskies. Found the food pairing you get with a BM a little odd - it was so tiny you wonder why they bother - but otherwise the beer and whisky pairing was perfect, and I'll be back to try a bunch more stuff soon.

Yelp
The capable staff from Eau De Vie have created a sophisticated whisky & beer bar in the Melbourne CBD. Ladies - this a great place to bring your man for a date. Gentlemen - this is a great place to take this lady for a date. There are approximately 600 different whiskeys available and a good variety of independent craft beers that rotate on tap. The menu is arranged by flavour, rather than origin, so it's accessible for both connoisseurs and novices. I recommend trying one of their signature boiler makers. It's a craft beer and whiskey pairing served with a small, flavourful bite, such as a square of dark chocolate or a crispy piece of bacon. These paired items work together to enhance each other's flavours for your drinking pleasure. The team is also working to create a selection of quality meats and cheeses. This is not the place for students looking to down Irish car bombs. Come here for quality drinks and conversation. I visited Boilermaker late on a Sunday evening and appreciated the relaxed atmosphere that gave us time to chat with our bartender. Word on the street is that the weekends are already busy at this new establishment, so you may want to plan accordingly. Pull back the large wooden door to discover a special spot in the city.

Yelp
when ur sitting sobering up .. sipping that beat ~$50 scotch... ** don't ask me what it was can't remember .. I just kept nodding!! "Yep" ** you realise it's funny watching drunk people fall over ... Xmas parties were everywhere!! anyways this place has a great vibe and atmosphere. If you're looking for a sophisticated drink this is it! scotches and whiskeys and cocktails .... plus ur usual local garden variety ... beers, basic spirits...

Yelp
Whisky lovers, this place have rows and rows of whisky, on the visit, I had 3 cocktails and my favourite is Miss Decadence, it came in a coffee cup with a biscuit. I prefer my cocktail to not taste like alcohol and this taste like a dessert. I would come back to this place just for the cocktail. Like any bar, the music is a tad too loud and conversation is a little hard with those caross the table when you are in the booth.

Samantha J.

Yelp
All variables worth reviewing (with the exception of food, because no one goes to a fancy cocktail bar to eat) were on point here. Service, fabulous. Drinks, boozy and delicious. Price point, worth it. Atmosphere, cool and hip. Selection of whisk(e)y, incredible. Albeit I'm a tourist not from the country, however I do hail from a great bar scene in Chicago and now live in LA where I wish we had bars like this one. Thanks for making my trip awesome, wish I had spent more time here!

Nikki R.

Yelp
Quite a cool ambience, with a huge selection of whiskeys, spirits and cocktails. After being at Eau de Vie (sister bar to Boilermaker House) earlier that night, I had some pretty big expectations for the cocktails here. Unfortunately though, the espresso martini, which I tend to use as my benchmark, was quite watery and lacking the kick or depth of character I'd expect. On the plus side, this bar is apparently open until 3am every night of the week, so it's a nice option for those looking for a nightcap or two late at night when many other bars are closing.

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere and the drinks are amazing. Just a little hard on the pockets. Great place to treat yo self to a chilled hangout with some friends.

Victoria F.

Yelp
This pace was really cool. Very expensive. Looks great beer was great I'll have to be back to try the menu and whiskey.

Siobhan B.

Yelp
Mostly I rate this place a 5 but please don't tell me off for sitting at an available spot at the bar. If you don't want people sitting there, remove the chair.

Ellie C.

Yelp
One of the bar staff here had some serious attitude towards one of my friends, which is a big turn off for me, so while I loved having some drinks here recently, it was a shame that his behaviour put us off so much! Luckily there was another staff member who was possibly the loveliest of all time, so she made up for her colleague. A great CBD spot for whisky fans, and a pretty good vibe. Will no doubt be busy most of the time, but this was a perfect location for some birthday drinks after a gig recently. They have really nice booth areas which are hopefully available to book, and the menu is pretty extensive with cocktails, boilermakers (beer and whisky combos), beers and the usual. Lots of snacks, meat boards and cheese too! You can always win me over with cheese...

Emilie C.

Yelp
Quite a nice place, bigger than most bars so we managed to find a table on a Saturday night! We were there during IPA week, and they did have an amazing selection on offer. The service was also really good, and people seemed to be happy about their cocktails. It's a bit more expensive than your regular bar but it was worth it.

Krystal L.

Yelp
What a nice little find on Lonsdale street, can almost be missed - however, once you're inside, you wont miss the fantastic arangement of spirits displayed behind the bar, like a wall of art! Cocktails all look amazing both on the menu & on the bar as the bartenders work at making them all look so good you almost won't want to drink it. Also an ever changing selection of beers on offer The problem is, will you be able to choose?

Stephen W.

Yelp
Porterhouse was fantastic, loved the creativity with the mint and parsley, great combo, and it made the steak pop. Beer selection great, though the menu didn't deliver they had a backup that was awesome, I like a full flavoured dark beer. Haven't sampled the extensive whisky menu yet, but the night is young.

Yelp
Over zealous bar staff on a power-trip ruined an evening and have turned me off what was formerly one of my favourite haunts in the CBD. To elaborate I've been drinking in the BH regularly for years. So much so that when a relative came to visit, I put it high on the itinerary of places to take them. Sadly on the evening in question we were greeted by a member of staff who could only be described as a 'snide hipster pedant'. After letting us waste 10 minutes reviewing the extensive menu he proceeded to ask for identification from my younger relative. Being 22 and somewhat fresh-faced, he's used to it so he produced a perfectly valid British drivers licence. Thus however was not acceptable to the jobsworth behind the bar and despite my assurances (as someone in their 40's) we were refused service. This was somewhat embarrassing for both of us and threw a shadow over what had been a great evening up until then. Thankfully the staff at nearby Whisky and Alement were found to be in possession of a lot more common sense and also a better range of whiskies so we had a cracking night there instead. So farewell Boilermaker House. I guess I'll be running up regular $200 bar bills* elsewhere from now on! *oh yeah. It's not a cheap place.

Greg S.

Yelp
Very interesting place to visit and enjoy an evening of whiskey, conversation & food. A huge variety of whiskeys available from all over the world presented in both bottles and "on tap" (really?). The bartenders were friendly and helpful in the selection of a good whiskey, but while I did find the price a tad steep, the quality made it worth it. My wife and I split the Polenta & blue cheese dip. It was tasty & warm, but I thought there should be more dipping sauce for the amount of Polenta chips. The chicken liver pate was incredible, but again, more bread chips would have helped as we had more pate than bread. Kind of hard to find though as there were outdoor seats, but if you looked in, the bar was behind a door, which gave it a bit of a speakeasy feel. Keep looking though because it's worth finding in Melbourne.

Yelp
Love this place! Tasty as burger, and definitely great for the Whisky lovers. My favorite are the Boilermakers which are a whisky matched with a beer - definitely try this

Emma P.

Yelp
My husband and I were excited to find this place while on business in Melbourne. Right down the street from the Marriott, we walked over looking for craft beer. They greeted us right away and service was friendly and attentive throughout our time there. We ordered a cheese and cured meat plate along with craft beer. Everything was delicious. It's dark and tavern-like inside with outdoor seating as well. Great experience!

Yelp
If you love whiskey, then this is your place. We were fortunate to have Patrick as our bartender. What a great host and wealth of knowledge through the various flavors and notes of all the many whiskeys we tried. He really is exceptionally knowledgeable, kind and patient and made our evening most enjoyable. Highly recommend to locals and visitors. Thank you Patrick!

Thomas L.

Yelp
Billing 5$ per person without notice, to lend plates and cutlery when we brought our own cake...this is just a massive deal-breaker, nearly a scam...

Sam O.

Yelp
I'm really sad over the quality of service at Boilermaker House. First off, it has an amazing vibe, decor and drinks menu, plus the food is to die for. The first time we went we absolutely loved it and were greeted with great service from all the staff. So great we decided to spend my partners 25th there. Overall the night went well and we had no issues with the drinks or food. But to start off the night we were given glasses of water as usual and one of our guests glasses had clearly not been cleaned properly as it had very obvious red lipstick marks on it. We asked the waiter for a new glass of water (and I expected an apology and maybe a free drink) but instead they just took the glass away and never gave us a replacement. What's more is at the start of the night they asked my partner for his credit card and ID for the reservation (not sure why) and told us they would return it when we left. Of course after a night of heavy whiskey drinking and all the guests paying with cash to treat the birthday boy we forgot the card and ID (but at no point did they remind or give it to us). We were already home when we realised, but needed the card for the next morning and were willing to go back into the city (they close at 3am) since they did not open till 3pm the next day. We tried calling them at 11pm when we got home several times asking if they were still open or if we could pick it up in the morning but they did not answer the phone nor return any of our phone calls. So after a stressful day of not having a card or ID my partner returned the next day at 4pm and they did not even apologise!! They just gave him the cards and walked away. I expected a huge apology at the least, and a place with better service would have offered a free drink or meal. I'm very disappointed that the staffs service did not stand up to the standard of their food and drinks. We will not be returning.

Paul S.

Yelp
This is a bit hit and miss, still finding it's identity. They make some great cocktails and the staff are friendly and helpful. The food menu could do with some work as it's done elsewhere. The do a lot of beer but also have good whiskies and scotch. Charcuterie is ok but for a beer place, it needs beer snacks.

O W.

Yelp
I like this joint despite it being so loud my head hurt. The whiskeys are why u come, the layout of them by flavour profile as opposed to country of origin makes it fun to compare and contrast a bunch of them. Hard to grab a booth, but the different zones throughout are fine to stand around in.

Melinda L.

Yelp
The drinks where amazing, spoilt for choice. The surrounding great. The food over priced but I assume the quality is very high. It was hard to enjoy being here as it was very crowded due to its popularity. Staff know their products.

Steve Y.

Yelp
I haven't done a review in a long time and this is the first one in Melbourne. I stopped almost as a accident, as far as a bar, incredible whiskey and beer selection and a cool bar atmosphere. The menu doesn't offer much of a selection but I ordered the brussel sprouts which was good but a bit too much on the salty side. I've only been in Melbourne for 8 days and went all over, this is the 3rd best bar scene to naked for Satan and village people. I'm from SF and food has been a disappointment in general but Village People was good. I had a hard time between scoring between a 4 or 5 based on expectations. Jackass idiot yelpers score negatively for the stupidest reasons and the only stupid reason to give this place less than a 5 is because I reserve the right to save that for something incredible but for all intents and purposes this place is a 5 if what you are expecting is a cool bar to have a drink and not a 5 star dinner.
