All great cities have great parks; they need them. As cities become denser and busier, their residents are more likely to crowd into tiny, overpriced apartments that are not quite amenable to hanging out or relaxing. Thus arises the requirement for bigger and better urban parkland. Such is the case with Paris.
At the eastern edge of Paris, the Bois de Vincennes rises to the occasion. Manicured in the English landscape style, it has a couple of small lakes separated by gently rolling grass and trees. There's also a stage (I saw a jazz festival there in Summer 2009), a château, a hippodrome, a velodrome, and an arboretum. There's nothing better to counter the bustle of Paris than an afternoon lazing about the Bois de Vincennes.
