Books and Coffee? Yes, please!
If you rent a car and drive on your trip to Iceland, you are going to pass through Selfoss, probably more than once. We were looking for a new place to stop, and just happened upon Bokakaffid by luck. As we read the sign, with sheer joy we realized it was not just a bookstore, but also a coffee shop! We would have stopped just for the books, by the way. Inside, it was everything we hoped for and more. Warm, clean, comfortable, eclectic, and full of books of all kinds as well as utterly charming postcards we could not resist buying! The selection of books includes new and old, every category imaginable, and many of them are in English.
The service was prompt and very friendly, and the coffee and pastries delicious.
Just by coincidence, prior to our trip we read a book called, “How Iceland Changed the World.” I saw a copy in the store and said to the proprietor, “We read this!” She then told us his parents own the store! Icelandair talks about the "Spirit of Iceland;" we felt it in this charming shop.
We wish we’d seen this sooner because it’s truly a place you can spend hours. This is the kind of bookstore that makes me wish I traveled with a huge suitcase full of extra space and no weight limits. Maybe next time I’ll ask if they ship!
