One of the most nostalgic greasy spoons in Southeastern Lower Michigan, is located on Michigan Avenue in Ypsilanti. The Bomber Restaurant is noted for its American aviation-theme decor that celebrates the history of Henry Ford's B-24 Bomber Plant, and the people who worked there and lived in the nearby Willow Village during World War II. The walls are lined with historic photos, WWII memorabilia, and other local artifacts.
When it comes to the famous "Bomber Breakfast" this places hits the spot like a squadron of B-24s on a mission to strategically take out your stomach pangs with precision accuracy. It comes with: four eggs, potatoes, toast, and numerous sausage patties, or bacon. The portions are a huge payload that will keep you full for most of the day, and you'll most likely take what's leftover home or to work with you. However, if this is too much to handle, you can choose other lesser menu selections, or the à la carte option and enjoy what you wish.
The Bomber only serves breakfast and lunch, but both are well worth the visit. Having enjoyed both, I can tell you their "Bomber Burgers" are bigger than a landmine, but far more tasty. In fact, when the Michigan State Police Post #26 was located just down the street on Michigan Avenue at Park Street until 1975, the Bomber was a favorite hangout for police officers from the various departments that serve the area.
I've enjoyed the "Bomber Jim," which is a grilled ham and cheese sandwich on a hoagie roll. This selection is very delicious, and you can choose your toppings according to your preferences. It's perfect if you skipped breakfast, and want a hearty lunch.
So if you want to explore the rich history of the Ypsilanti area, you owe it to yourself to visit the Bomber. You will be amazed at the collection of memorabilia, and fascinating items that on display.
