On the Grid : Bonanza Coffee Heroes

"Their heroism may be self-proclaimed, however that doesn’t make it any less true. Bonanza is home to many the coffee connoisseurs, brewing the perfect cup as well as roasting and supplying beans to other cafes around the city. You have the option to choose your preferred grind but amateurs don't need to be intimidated, they’re all good." - Gabby Lord

8 Best Coffee Shops in Berlin | Condé Nast Traveler

"Located smack-dab in the middle of the elegant Oderberger Strasse in the Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood, just a few streets south of popular Mauerpark, Bonanza Coffee opened in 2006—a lifetime ago, in Berlin years—and has something of a religious following among third-wave coffee aficionados. The site-roasted beans have a fruity note to them, and that cherry flavor seeps into everything from the cortado to the flat white (said to be among Berlin’s very best), and double shots come standard with each espresso order. Whether you stop in for a goosebump-inducing jolt before scouring Mauerpark’s flea market or just to meet friends before a day out, you'll be struck with how intimate the small space feels." - Eliot Stein

Google
The coffee looks nice, but there are no other advantages. Sitting on stools like in a fast food bar, austere decor, cappuccino was sour, latte bland, we paid 9€ for 2 small coffees, we couldn't drink it. Normally, I would leave at the very beginning, but I wanted to try the coffee described in many articles as the best in Berlin.

Google
Bonanza is a really busy place, at least on a Sunday when there are a lot of people in the area. The wait was quite long, but it was worth the coffee. I had an iced filter coffee and a cappuccino to go. Awesome.

Google
Coffee itself isn't so bad but if you don't tip them the amount of coffee will get visibly less 😂 or maybe it's just the way they are? Tbh the barn is way better. Also the seats are very uncomfortable & covered in birdpoop. Seems that nobody actually maintains them.

Google
There are a LOT of coffee houses in Berlin. This has been by far my most favorite. The Americano was excellent.

Google
The cool kids, hipster hangout spot. I felt cool just being in the vicinity of the people there. Unsurprisingly they have fantastic coffee and even better pastries! Make sure when you try their filled pastries you watch out for the little birds, they’re cute but fearless and will steal anything on your plate! 😂

Google
This café is a coffee lover's dream! They offer a variety of coffee beans, so you can try different flavors each visit. Plus, they cater to different dietary needs by providing dairy-free milk options. Their decaf coffee is the best I've had, perfect for those who prefer less caffeine. Don't miss out on their tasty pastries and cookies—they're the perfect accompaniment to your coffee. With seating available both inside and outside, it's a great spot to relax and enjoy your brew in any weather.

Google
such a great hip place which certainly knows how to roast and serve their coffee! sadly i'm not a fan of acidic coffee, but if it's your thing, this certainly is the place for you! but be prepared to wait for your order a bit, since it's really popular

Laurian Muresan

Google
If you want an amazing coffee, this is the place! Best coffee in town by far! Super friendly staff and nice atmosphere outside on the benches. Also recommend the pain au chocolat and the croissant.

Yelp
I don't get to Berlin often, but when I do I like to buy freshly roasted beans from a roaster ranked in the Top 50 in the world. I have tried several dedicated specialty coffee roasters in Berlin but now focus nearly exclusively on Bonanza. Big, rich, complex and wonderfully distinctive selections, really deftly roasted. My visit to Prenzlauer Berg was made especially worthwhile by an employee who not only knew the current selections in detail, but had excellent personal recommendations. She said she was particularly impressed by the La Pitina Natural Costa Rica, and WOW did she nail that. What a full-on flavor bomb those beans turned out to be, and her recommendation of the Akinyi Shamba Kenya was also knockout - - LOVE these coffees. After that visit I ordered them again online from here in Hamburg, and am again very pleased. I really appreciate Bonanza's service and dedication (not to forget superb buying and roasting!) across all facets of the operation. So grateful for the personal service, and for the exceptional attention to care that Bonanza provides. Absolutely top drawer.

Yelp
Went to the Gendarmenmarkt location and had an absolutely delicious cappuccino and croissant! The coffee was so good I had to order a second one and it was one of the best I've ever had. The cafe is stylish and cozy, and I would definitely recommend this coffee shop while in Berlin!

Yelp
The best in Berlin. Adorable location, it's away from street noise and traffic, tucked away behind some buildings and right next to a preschool with farm animals (in Berlin, who knew!?). There's outside seating in a quite courtyard and plenty of room inside too. The espresso is absolutely delicious, staff are friendly, the pastries are also great. They serve pea milk instead of oat, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it is - also a great source of protein.

Christine B.

Yelp
Really bad service! I had to wait 15min for an Americans! After asking 3 times I clearly saw how much I was disturbing the girl chatting! Also overpriced!
google avatar

Vaughn P.

Yelp
Very arrogant baristas. I ordered a coffee with milk, and the barista told me "no you can't put milk in the filter coffee. We have perfected the recipe and it has a very fine taste. It's too FRAGILE for milk." People all around the world out milk in coffee... somehow these people found a way to make coffee fragile.

Pholkee E.

Yelp
Worst Christmas Experience Ever! Came in Dec 24th in the morning to buy a pack of coffee beans intended as a Xmas present -- they said they were closed and that their credit card reader was switched off. I offered to pay in cash and even top it up -- they still said they were closed. Guys, that's not how you treat customers... Better have your staff learn some German, and while you're at it, teach them the word "Fingerspitzengefühl" - translates to "tact and sensitivity" BTW ;-)
google avatar

Adilson C.

Yelp
Quoting my friend the @TheCoffeeTrooper https://instagram.com/p/BZVRLMdnHMo/ "Really, there is no other place in the Prussian Galact empire that you will find #rebelbeans from many places compound a #coffeeexperience like that. "
google avatar

Yelp
They offer oat & almond milk for vegans! Their oat & sesame date vegan cookie is delicious! The space is best for very small groups or couples with seating throughout & outside. The WiFi allows you to work or play while enjoying the coffee. The music is R&B euro style. Order when you walk in & they bring the coffee and water to your table. The staff speaks better English than I do and are friendly. The other customers do run off with the sugar jar but it made its way to me quickly! The look inside is very clean & minimal, not fussy. I've never had oat milk before but the flavor works well with their coffee. They do not offer decaf but I've noticed that caffeinated coffee does not ramp me up here like it does in the US. Though there were plenty of options for coffee between here & the Schonhauser s-bahn station, I'm glad I had my first Prenzlauer Berg cappuccino here!

Yelp
One of best flat white I got in Berlin so far! The coffee is absolutely great! Bonanza is a must experience

Yelp
There were so many people at this cafe when we went!! Upon entering, the counter area was kind of open but still on the side, so I was confused at first about where to order. Their menu is super simple, with a few espresso drink options and some coffee-related dessert options. There was still seating left inside despite how many people were in there. The decor was very clean and minimal, and fit the hip Prenzlauerberg cafe vibe perfectly. Stacked on one wall were coffee paraphernalia that I eventually want for myself: Chemexes, Aeropresses, water boilers, etc. all for sale. There was also an island with coffee machine looking things near the entrance that I am still perplexed by. Either way, it's a really good space to chill and the people working there are really nice. I got a flat white with their Ethiopian coffee, which was more full bodied and fruity than I was used to. It was still really quality coffee, and I enjoyed it in the nice atmosphere the cafe provided, even when it was packed full of people because of the Sunday flea market nearby. I would definitely go back to try more of their menu!

Yelp
Simply the best coffee in town. A Must. Cool and friendly people behind the bar. Try: Flat white.

Yelp
I usually prefer a V60 brew, but every once in a while I don't mind a shot of espresso with a dollop of frothy milk. And I have found very few places that do milky coffee better than Bonanza Coffee Heroes. Bonanza also roasts their own beans, and they are happy to grind them for you - anyway you want! I got a lovely light roast to bring home to my Hario drip pot, the only downside was the price which was nearly the same as back home (Oslo that is). I think I paid 15 euros or so for a bag. But for me, it's still totally worth it. I also find Bonanza's minimalistic interior very appealing, and in contrast to other reviews I have read (here or elsewhere) I have found the service to be excellent - and for the staff to more than helpful answering all my coffee related questions. Some stupid, some (hopefully) not. Only negative, it's about five minutes too far from my work.. not making it the regular lunch time hangout it could have been!

Yelp
I'm a coffee nut, I love great coffee and seek it out wherever I go around the world. That being said, I had one of the greatest ever cappuccinos of my life at Bonanza. everything about it was perfect, and it was not elegant, but strong, characterful, and robust. If you're anywhere near Prenzlauer Berg, and love good coffee, I beg you to visit Bonanza Coffee Heroes.
google avatar

Ryna D.

Yelp
We were walking around Prenzlauer Berg and eventually ended up here since I wanted to try out their coffee. They had 2 kinds of coffee for the single pour so I got both to try. While I'm not as fanatic about third wave coffee I do love doing the tastings as I'm fascinated with the nuances in flavors each coffee has. This place is definitely a hipster magnet and practically everyone in the cafe were talking in English. It's small and there are only a few seats inside but the coffee was great!
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
Just about the best cup of coffee I have found in Berlin. 5 Stars for that. And their NY cheesecake is good also. The thing I don't like about this cafe is the seating. Not much inside. When the weather is nice there are benches and tables to sit at, but they are not comfortable. Also the windows in the cafe are too small. I prefer lots of comfortable indoor seating and large windows. But this is where I get my coffee and get coffee to take back to friends in the States.
google avatar

Marius M.

Yelp
Overpriced, arrogant baristas. Basically backerei coffee is a better investment. It promises a lot through looks and feeling but it falls short on the delivery
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Bonanza feels someone decided to turn a speakeasy on a spaceship into a coffee shop. A takeaway latte runs a slightly high 3.20 EUR, but it's frothy perfection with an amazingly rich taste. I'll be back to try the single origin roasts on my next visit.
google avatar

Ittai S.

Yelp
The coffee is ok (had better coffee in the area). The service was very rude. The girls refused to help us with a bit more milk or ice. We had to return the coffee because it was too strong for us.
google avatar

Sam B.

Yelp
boring space, expensive and not tasty coffee, intractable vendors, and little variation on any theme at all. skip this place unless you need to be seen by someone in an overpriced venue of ambiguous to null value items.
google avatar

N T.

Yelp
Coffee is very very tasty, no question. One of the best. They're overpriced though (€3.20 for a small but strong capuccino), their attitude is too hipster many times so they are too cool to care about you and to pay you some attention at all. Their croissant (€1.50) is quite so-so.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Best coffee I've ever had ! Quirky little place, only does coffee not even a croissant do they serve. The just do coffee, but they know their onions that's for sure !
google avatar

Qype User (bbrow…)

Yelp
This is the best coffee in Berlin. Really. Maybe the best I ever tasted. I had a cappuccino, and it had almost a sweet taste, without any sugar in it, a perfect blend between coffee and milk. The coffee shop is small but cozy, and when it's warm weather they have a big outdoor seating area. EDIT: Bonanza is maybe not THE best coffee in town, but it's certainly among the top ten
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
Damn good coffee. I am by no means a coffee connoisseur but the coffee here was the best I had in Berlin! They also have free wifi though the seat is pretty limited. Very airy and nice Vibe and nice plus friendly service as well
google avatar

Connor B.

Yelp
Bonanza was exactly what I hoped for - amazing craft espresso. That's the main point of buying coffee instead of making it yourself right? These guys and girls know how to do it exceptionally well! It is immediately obvious because you walk inside and are confronted with various brew methods and stations instead of a traditional counter. Once you pick your brew method, bean origin/taste (roasted in house), and drink style, they masterfully craft it in a matter of minutes. I was lucky enough to get a seat and enjoyed the minimal ambiance during my smooth and flavorful, not acidic, burned, or too fruity, cappuccino. My only complaint about Bonanza is the atmosphere is not very inviting: seating is limited and uncomfortable, and the front counter area is a bit hectic and confusing. My friends went to Bonanza and walked out immediately because it was overwhelming and confusing. But if that's not the type of coffee consumer they're catering to, then that's ok too! The employees are nice and informative and most speak English, so give it a try and reward yourself with a great espresso experience!
google avatar

Abra S.

Yelp
I really want to give this place 4 stars. The coffee shop is very nice and they make it seem like it's a chemist pouring the drip coffee. My only gripe is that it is way overpriced! A small cup of coffee costs 2.5 euros and its not even topped off. A small cup of drip coffee costs 4.5 euros and you are getting a 3/4 cup of small coffee if you're lucky. I tried to tell them more than once, "no room for cream", and they only put another drip of coffee in the cup. For Berlin prices, that is very expensive! I was already irritated by the fact of not getting a full small cup of coffee and the fact that I am getting half that for that much is ridiculous. There are tons of drip coffee houses and I rather go to another one.

Yelp
Bets coffee in Berlin. On Sundays, as there is the market over the road Mauerpark it gets like... WAY too busy... so if you want to go on a Sunday maybe go later in the day after 4pm when its chilled out a bit. All the staff are friendly and coffee lovers/freaks - they know their stuff. I usually go for Flat White or Latte (more milk), although sometimes I like a filter, TBH I prefer "black coffee"/ Americano but they don't do that, and in summer I take a espresso and pour it over the ice myself because that's also something they don't like. Lol so into my coffee, know what I like :) They have limited seating - its not really a working place although sometimes people do... And often I wish they had some savory food like a little sandwich Italian style - or avocado on toast NZ style - obviously not theirs though, can't have it all ;)
google avatar

Jonas G.

Yelp
If you are living in Berlin and like coffee you will hear about this place sooner or later. And it's all true what they say about it: it is certainly one of the best coffee places in the city. They roast their own beans, grind them and really celebrate coffee as an art. It's pretty nerdy and pretty hipster, but the coffees they produce are just worth all the show. Their espresso maker is a pure beauty. The machine is apparently worth close to 20.0000 Euro. It's worth it to already to come here and just see the machine. Their flat white is outstanding and for me the best I ever had anywhere in the world. Their special is their filter coffee. It's a bit pricey for Berlin standards but totally worth it. I bet you never had a filter coffee that's that tasty. If you want to sit down and study or read and enjoy your coffee then this place is not the best choice as seating is limited. But I love to come here and get my beverage to go or sit on their patio in the summer. Service is solid and always up for explaining you their coffee. For me the best coffee in Berlin.
google avatar

Rob P.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday on my last day in Berlin. Had been really coffee slumming it the rest of my trip, so I wanted to treat myself. My original choice was closed on Sundays so I ended up here. Huge line, but I weathered the storm and they were pretty quick. Asked for a recommendation and was told to try the filtered coffee. For 2.50 euro I thought it was pretty pricey, but it was tasty. Would like to go back and have an espresso based drink. Didn't blow me away as the Best Coffee Ever, though.
google avatar

Andrea L.

Yelp
I lived across the street from Bonanza for 3 months and rain or shine (one being more common than the other...) this place was always packed. It is clear that it's the neighborhood spot for coffee. What they do (espresso, traditional capuccino and latte) they do very well, but do not ask them to step out of what they know or what is sought after in a Berlin coffee joint, aka: Ice Coffee or Cold Brew because these are fads unique to the USA and like one can imagine "no one does it better". The joint is owned by Japanese coffee lovers and attended too by your average hipster German barista. Service is not out of the ordinary but I also don't attend this place looking for a 6 star Balinese Hotel style service. Even though a little over priced I can't deny that the coffee is musk, full bodied and all in all proper! A great cup of coffee that is roasted, grinded and brewed under you nose, for sure worth the try.
google avatar

Thor T.

Yelp
Used to come here in the early days, when Bonanza was one of the few really good coffee places in Berlin. Now there are plenty, some better than Bonanza (Godshot, Barn, Krümel, etc.) and while the place - overrun as usual - still can make good coffee, the douche-y guy at the cash register treats people exactly as you would expect in a place that does not give a hoot about individual customers. Today, my request to have the coffee (almost 4 Euros) in a cup was refused, instead I was given a dinky paper cup - awful (someone known to the barista came out with a cup). Given the plethora of Berlin cafes, that was the last time for me at this overrated place.
google avatar

Aus B.

Yelp
They roast and make a darn good coffee. The espresso I had here was the best coffee i got in Berlin. Hands down. If you know Ritual from San Francisco, Bonanza's coffee is very close to matching Ritual's dedication and perfection to roasting coffee beans. Definitely hipster like vibe but at least they deliver with what they are offering. There is outdoor siting but mostly benches (no shade really to speak of).
google avatar

Jennie C.

Yelp
Really good coffee - wait can be a little long though. There's usually two choices of espresso beans; I went with the Bonanza which I thoroughly enjoyed. There's wonderful (and ample) outdoor seating for you to people/flower/tree watch. Lots of children running around :)

Shane A.

Yelp
So, we asked for advice. They said "this coffee is low acidity." Either they gave us the wrong cup (see below) or they don't know their product. I tried to order a cup of coffee that had beans loaded into a grinder. They told me it's not available. I tried to order a different cup from a different part of the bar where it was indicated I could find the beans that actually were available for brewing. Second try, also a fail. I finally got lucky on my third try and thank god, they DO have that coffee available. Ok. We've got two coffees on order. Coffees are brewed and... they brewed the wrong coffee. And, they weren't sure which cup was which, meaning that at least for this first cup we don't know what we are drinking, and we think it's not what we ordered. Waiting 6 minutes for a rebrew of the second cup, hopefully using the correct beans this time. The first cup tastes nice despite being high acidity, so 2 stars for not having crappy coffee, but really guys, figure out how to run a coffee shop. :(

Jane T.

Yelp
This place has got the art of making coffee RIGHT! From carefully selected/ roasted coffee beans to their method of pouring down your coffee has got a lot of locals and visitors coming for more! Do enjoy !
google avatar

Valerie L.

Yelp
Berlin's third wave coffee game is strong. Bonanza was one of the highlights of my unofficial coffee shop tour there. They have a delicious flat white and the baristas obviously know their stuff. It's reminiscent of SF/Williamsburg in Brooklyn in terms of the hipster vibe. They also grind their own beans (I believe). There are only two or three small tables inside, but there is some outdoor seating too. Highly recommend to anyone who takes their coffee very seriously.
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
Their vegan chocolate chip cookies taste like regular cookies. The coffee itself was very rich and slightly pricey, but it is still affordable. The employees were very kind and spoke English very well. There is free wifi and the bathroom is open to customers, just ask first. The cafe has a lounge vibe and is great for conversations. I was surprised by the layout of the inside. they make the coffee on an open table and you can see all the magic involved in making their brew.
google avatar

Flow V.

Yelp
Quite simply put: VERY good coffee! Too bad: no low-fat milk.
google avatar

Qype User (fer…)

Yelp
This has to the best coffee in Berlin. I should probably not have written this, as this place is often over capacity, but it's far too late to keep it secret...
google avatar

Hannah W.

Yelp
My new superhero! Fresh. Tasty. Smooth. Dark. Bonanza. They roast their own beans and it is really good. Classic coffee snob of Berlin. A bit pricey but not as expensive as yelp says.
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
First, great goddamn name. Definitely a much mellower vibe than suggested by the placard. Dig the cool-colored aesthetic: lots of dull blue, distressed wood and polished silver. Plenty of outdoor seats on spacious sidewalk. Staff was pleasant and sagacious; dude gave us a bead on authentic Berliner biergarten around the corner. They roast their own beans here, so you know your pour is fresh. Espresso had a bright, bitter streak followed by a mellow roastiness. V-60 pour was ultra-floral, tea-like Kenya. Good stuff. Total: ~ €7.5. Expensive compared to prices in the States, but worth it for a familiar coffee experience.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
€4.40 for a coffee and croissant but this is better coffee than you will get almost anywhere. Very trendy and cozy and pretty friendly as Berlin goes.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Nice space in Prenzlauer Berg. Had a memorable flat white here...the coffee had an interesting fruity vibe. Croissant was not so great (too dry) but the coffee was so good that it didn't matter to me. Inside was quite crowded with nowhere to sit but they also have an outdoor patio which is nice for watching people on this cute street.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Very good coffee (we had Affogato), nice location with tables outside as well. BUT the guy behind the counter/cashier was annoyed and even rolled his eyes when we gave him the money (no we did not slow down anyone) and that's a no go, even in Berlin.
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
snottiest most sterile place ever. offered me overpriced drip coffee instead of americano (which is completely different and watery, the drip) which they don't even have. when i opted for espresso shot for 2euro(!) i got it in a mug. also, maybe i'm not one to talk, but this is berlin: learn some damn german! one star because the beans are tasty. too bad i'd rather choke on em then support this business
google avatar

Ivo H.

Yelp
Good coffee, grumpy staff. Would go back when I'm in the neighborhood, wouldn't detour for it.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
It's a nice tiny place with amazing coffee. If you're into coffee, and maybe even want to talk about coffee, this is your place. Would love to give it a four, but I didn't have the feeling that I wanted to stay those times I was there. You have the feeling that you have nowhere to sit, like you're in the middle of a construction site, and don't get me wrong, it looks cool and very hipster, but it has nothing more than good coffee-you can't really sit anywhere nor work. (And no real cookie options but I didn't give a minus for that...)
google avatar

Ben E.

Yelp
The hype is real around this place: if Apple made coffee shops, this is what it would look like. Friendly staff, amazing coffee and other hot drinks too, most of which come with a bonus, whether it's a biscuit or a marshmallow to perfectly complement your drink. The wifi is super fast, and they have dedicated areas for laptop users, away from the main crowd but not too isolated. They also have outdoor seating, perfect if you want to sip a hot coffee while catching some sun rays. Honestly, if you're ever in Berlin and you're serious about coffee (and I mean good coffee), make sure you visit this place.
google avatar

Kate F.

Yelp
Friendly, chill. A great pour-over. A tiny little shop that's just right during the week. Beans and glassware for sale. Magazines hanging by the seats to read, additional seating out front.
google avatar

Antek P.

Yelp
Their black, filtered, V60 or Chemex are always stunning. They know all about their coffee, roast it themselves, obviously. Their whites, however, tend to be disappointing. I've had better flat whites in a lot of places. Prices are definitely ok, though the baristas will take their time with your coffee. They also offer their beans in 250g packages, surprisingly enough it isn't that pricey.
