10 Best Tours in Savannah

"History in Headstones is a one-man operation and the passion project of Don, the guide, who embraces a conversational style over lectures. Fans of "Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil" will love just being in this cemetery, which features heavily in the novel (and movie). Don’s expertise is also memorable; he brings to life the city’s history through the graves of its most famous residents, from Savannah’s founding through the Civil War and beyond." - Paul Oswell

My husband and I had the pleasure of doing a tour with Bonaventure Don a year ago and we couldn’t wait to bring our teen/young adult kids. All of us love history and Don did not disappoint. He has a down-to-earth and sometimes very funny style. We felt like we learned more history about Savannah with him than on some historic tours downtown. He really makes the people buried there “come to life” and though we aren’t usually big fans of being in cemeteries, this one is beautiful and the history is very interesting. Highly recommend.

Don was a great tour guide you could tell he takes history serious yet he still was able to make you laugh and have an enjoyable time . We learned so much in a beautiful atmosphere. I highly recommend you taking this tour . You can tell Don loves Savannah and its history and especially Bonadventure .

My wife scheduled us to take this tour on my Birthday trip. We’ve been to Savannah 6 times before and toured these beautiful grounds. The tour with Don was beyond what I expected. I feel that I could sit down or walk around for weeks and learn all the things Don has to share with us! I would recommend this tour and I plan to take the tour again someday! You can tell that Don really appreciates what he does!

Google
We took 4 tours, and Don's was the best! His knowledge is outstanding, and he's very engaging. He also provides great recommendations! Go see him at the beginning of your trip, not the end like we did. I went to Bonaventure purely for the beauty of the place, but left knowing more about the history (the true history) than I thought I would. Highly recommend!

Google
Don’s tour was amazing! We learned so much about literally everything involved, from the monuments and the families they belonged to, to the flowers and trees that surround them. I really appreciated hearing these stories with all of the details, even though some aren’t fun to hear (what with this being the south and all). My favorite part was learning about John Walz and his missing monument. His sculptures are beautiful! He also gave some pretty stellar recommendations for museum tours and restaurants to visit while we’re in town. I would recommend taking Don’s tour first so you can take his recommendations from there!

Google
Don is the best! Our experience lived up to all the recommendations. Not only is he knowledgeable and passionate about Savannah history, but he goes the extra mile. Don met us before the tour to show us the grave of a family member. That was so much appreciated and unexpected. Others may walk you around and tell you stories, but Don fills your journey through Savannah’s former residents with intriguing facts and tales that intertwine in neat ways. Book a tour with Don. I promise you will not be disappointed!

Google
An outstanding tour. Don gave us so much insight and understanding of savannah and the south, all through the lens of the history of bonaventure and the people buried there. And its a beautiful to place to visit. Its about a two hour gentle walk, eventually reaching the Savannah river. Take plenty of water and insect repellent - though Don has supplies of these too. Highly recommended

Google
I just finished the tour with Don and it was absolutely AMAZING. Such a pleasant afternoon walking through the beautiful cemetery, the gorgeous vegetation, and learning so much about the history of Savannah and the Bonaventure cemetery. Don is the best! Thank you for the wonderful tour.

Yelp
It's been just over a year since we were in Savannah and booked a tour with Bonaventure Don, I just realized I didn't leave a review when I was downloading my pictures finally! This was our second vacation in Savannah and the first time we were vacationing in Savannah we visited Bonaventure Cemetery on our own and were intrigued by the beauty and history and wished we had booked a tour. This time when we were planning our trip I made sure to book a tour and Don was highly recommended in the Savannah fb group that I participate in. Don is very knowledgeable in everything to do with the cemetery, he knows history well and was able to share stories of the people buried there and background stories to go with them. I highly recommend if you're visiting the cemetery to take a tour with a knowledgeable guide (Don) and enjoy your visit!

Yelp
Best tour in Savannah! Not even close. So much history of the cemetery and the city. It was great how Don combined it all into an educational ride! Highly recommend. We came in with a price in mind to pay - it's a name your price tour - and left paying him way more! Loved his passion and knowledge. Truly one of the best tours I've ever been on anywhere and the best in town! His customer service is 10 stars!

Yelp
This was a very interesting historical tour centered around the cemetery and the notable people buried in the cemetery. My teens also found the tour interesting. Don supplies the average rate for similar tours ($25-$30 at the time of this review) and you decide at the end of the tour how much you want to pay. Our tour ran from 2:30 to 4:45. Don has been giving cemetery tours for many years. You can tour the cemetery on your own, but I think that the experience is so much richer when you take a guided cemetery tour. (I know this because we visited the cemetery briefly on our own and then came back for Don's guided tour).

Yelp
Excellent and extremely informative tour of Bonaventure cemetery, and much more. Visiting Savannah from Pittsburgh with friends from Hilton Head, Don Teuton gave a thorough overview of the history of Savannah and the region as we visited gravesites and also viewed some of the monuments, the wonderful carvings and statuary. You will thoroughly enjoy the two and one-half hours you spend touring the grounds. One of the best tours we have taken.

Yelp
This is a superior tour. Very thorough on history and many interesting facts about Savannah's settlement and history are presented. I definitely recommend this tour; Don's knowledge of and love for Savannah shines through his narratives, and he has a good read on his audience. There is no set fee for this tour; rather, you pay at the end of the tour based on your experience and/ or the going rate. If you're a history buff or even just a fan of authenticity, this is the tour for you!

Yelp
We have been other tours of Bonaventure and this by far and away was the best. Don prides himself on historical accuracy and he makes every part of the cemetery come alive. He's extremely knowledgeable and has an obvious love for Savannah and it's past. He presents the positive aspects of history as well as its flaws. We plan to recommend to all our visitors. Thank you Don!

Yelp
Don gave us an excellent tour of Bonaventure. He really knows the cemetary and the history of Savannah. He is knowledgeable, funny, passionate, and gives a great tour. His stories are interesting and factually accurate. We highly recommend him.

Yelp
So knowledgeable about the families of Savannah, felt like I knew them personally. He supplied cold water on a very hot day. His respect for the dead was so nice to see, and his love for Savannah is obvious. Recommend this tour for any interested in the past.

Yelp
Very informative on history and alot of excellent facts about the history of savannah. Highly recommend this tour. Don is on the historical society and backs his findings by giving you his bibliography. There is no set fee for this tour. You pay at the end of the tour and you pay what you think it is worth! Once again highly recommend if you want to know the real history.

Yelp
Don is an amazing tour guide. The tour is filled with history made interesting even if you aren't a history buff. And if you are- you will be in heaven Bonaventure Cemetery is gorgeous and Don makes it come alive. The tour is a walking tour, so bring comfy shoes, and you will be glad you came. Whether you are interested in horticulture (I learned how to multiply camellias), the history of Savannah/the south, art and sculpture, slavery, or women's status in the 1800s-there will be something for you. And the best is that Don has a great dry wit! I brought my family of seven, ages 23-84, and everyone raved about it. We will go back!
