Yelp
Really fun place that offers a bit more than just a typical capsule hotel. They have an eclectic selection of books (plenty in English) and also some beers and other beverages, but I didn't try them out.
The atmosphere is very quiet and relaxing, and I regret arriving late and not being able to enjoy it as much as I could. It's a very nice escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown.
The style of the inside is nicely designed but also very minimalistic. The whole place feels like it's a big bunk bed, lovingly assembled by a parent to provide a fun place for their kids to hang out as well as get their learning on. There is a bit of a downside, as you can push aside some of fabric barriers to see the industrial-looking walls behind them.
The "river view" rooms don't have that great of a view of the river, but the extra cost is worth it because the rooms seem to be a bit larger, since the windows are recessed. You can easily fit a backpack or two in that space, if you'd rather keep your camera bags close by.
Much to my surprise, they offer a secure area to store luggage behind a locked door (unlike other capsule hotels such as Nine Hours). I found out too late, as I had jumped the gun and stored my luggage right at the nearby subway station.
The staff was very friendly as well - I practiced some of my broken Japanese with them. Much more friendly than the staff at Nine Hours, who were unusually unfriendly.
I'd definitely stay here again! Looking forward to coming back sometime.
Pros:
-really nice atmosphere with a nice design, and calm low lighting
-really quiet environment
-nice comfy couches outside of bunks, so folks can comfortably read books there
-friendly staff
-decent selection of English books!
-river view capsules offer a bit more space
-secure locked area to store large luggage (opened by staff)
-small secure lockbox inside capsules (for storing very small items such as wallets, etc)
-free ear plugs are provided, since there will probably be snorers there. Though since the number of capsules are small and relatively spread out, with lots of curtains to dampen the sounds, I don't think this could ever be as loud as nearby Nine Hours, which has a horrible acoustics design.
-great location for exploring Kyoto
-nice clean smoke-free environment
Cons:
-it was a bit difficult getting up and down the ladder to my capsule (or maybe I'm just getting too old)
-the ceiling of the top bunk is just a curtain draped over. If you're sneaky you can lift it up and peek over into your neighbor's capsule, so I felt it could be a bit more private if they added a wood ceiling instead.
-seemed a little bit pricey, but that's mostly due to location and for the atmosphere. Kyoto generally has limited accommodation, but if you book in advance you may be able to find a business hotel nearby for a similar price or cheaper (at that price it may be slightly run down or smokey though).
-the view of the river isn't great (but the river view rooms are worth it for the extra space)
