BOOK AND BED TOKYO Shinjuku

This spot offers a super unique stay for book lovers. The atmosphere is great—it feels like sleeping inside a stylish, cozy library cafe, which is perfect for solo travelers prioritizing a cool experience. However, the sleeping areas are small capsule-style pods, not private rooms. Privacy and security are minimal, as the "door" is just a curtain (no lock). Additionally, we had to make our own bed when we arrived, and large luggage must be stored below the capsule. The toilet bidet was not working, which was a significant inconvenience for personal hygiene. Great choice for a solo traveler focused on the unique concept and atmosphere. If you need standard hotel privacy, space, or functioning amenities, this isn't the place.

We stayed at the Shinjuku location. We booked purely because we loved the concept of sleeping in a bookstore/library. As a family of 6 who loves books, we thought it would be a cozy, quiet escape from the city. Unfortunately, our experience was the opposite. This location is on the 8th floor of a building that, unbeknownst to us, sits directly above a club and a darts bar. We enjoy nightlife ourselves, but if you’re someone who can’t sleep through loud music and heavy bass rattling the bunks, you won’t get any rest.||Check-in itself was smooth, though the staff at the front desk were a bit cold and standoffish, but that wasn't an issue for us. However, as soon as we entered the common area and bunks, there was a strong musty smell. We headed to our assigned beds and made them ourselves (which we know is typical for hostels), but the pods were uncomfortably hot, and the pillows were visibly yellow stained, which was very off-putting.||We were surprised to find that there were no lockers anywhere in the facility. When we asked, we were told the only safe storage available was the small safes inside the bunks, but the safe in my pod didn’t even have batteries. I ended up placing my items in a sibling’s safe instead.||The worst part of the stay, and the part we felt was truly unacceptable, was the state of the bathrooms. They looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in months - mold and mildew around the sinks, filthy floors, stained toilets, and even one bathroom light switch with the cover missing, leaving exposed wiring. It felt genuinely unsanitary and unsafe. We were scared to use the showers because of how dirty everything was, so we decided not to shower at all. We were staying for one night anyway so we decided to tough it out.||When it came time to sleep, the noise from the club below was constant and the pods trapped a lot of heat. The a/c wasn’t running through the night.||Overall, we really do not recommend staying here. Yes, it’s cheap, but we’ve stayed in cheaper capsule hotels that were far cleaner, safer, and more considerate of their guests comfort.

I booked based on the online photos, but the real experience didn’t match the images. When my itinerary changed, I contacted the property multiple times via Agoda and email, but received no reply. Communication was difficult. The location is very convenient with plenty of dining options, but because it’s in a busy area, nights are noticeably noisy and the surroundings feel a bit chaotic. Facilities are minimal. Aside from toilets and showers, I didn’t see typical hostel amenities (e.g., a water dispenser, coffee machine, or laundry). The capsule sleeping space is very small and not friendly for luggage or anyone who needs extra room. Overall, I wouldn’t choose to stay here again. Tips for Travelers Good for a quick overnight if you only need a central location. If you value quiet and shared facilities, consider other options.

Great hotel - much better than expected actually - we are a family of 4 with 2 kids 10 and 12 and they absolutely wanted to try it - we all had our own capsule - Staff was very friendly and English speaking, the capsules are quiet and bigger than we thought, with room at the bottom to store your luggage (including our big luggage). The books and capsules create a very soft and quiet environment, where we all slept well through the night - it was not noisy at all (even if your capsule door is a double curtain) - Everyone seems to respect the "be quiet" rule. The beds are simple but comfy enough, no one complained the day after 🤪They have a little cafe for drinks and food, but the best part of it is that you are right in the middle of the action - in the very vibrant Shinjuku with all restaurants, neons, bars etc Absolutely 10 / 10 for location and surprisingly 10 / 10 for quietness, located on the 8th floor of a 10 storeys building. All in all a very unique and fun experience.

This place has a really cute theme, and the book decor is well done. The location is excellent, and the staff were pretty friendly, but the whole place is incredibly dirty. The capsules are filled with debris and dust. The sheets provided are clean, but the sleeping pad (no mattress, just thin pad) was stained. The bathrooms are covered in grime and mold; the showers looked like they had never been cleaned, and the toilets were disgusting. One of the dirtiest hostels I have stayed at which was a huge surprise both for Japan and for the cost given a hotel across the way would have been the same price for two people. If you really like books, maybe visit for a coffee during the day but I strongly suggest sleeping elsewhere.

The space is super cool and I loved all the books. Some great cafe seating and I enjoyed journaling in the lounge area. The bathrooms need some maintenance, and the A/C was not great especially in the middle of the night. The service felt pretty impersonal. Some might really like that.

Location wise is perfect for people who like nightlife, shopping and dining as the hotel is located in the heart of Shinjuku near to many department store, restaurants and kombini. Service was good, rooms is wide enough. To be noted the decoration with books theme that makes it outstanding

Staff: Very young, clearly underpaid, and fully disengaged. Hospitality isn’t part of the business model here. Sleep: Think sauna meets storage unit—hot, dusty, no mattress, and zero ventilation. Bathroom: Couple dirty toilets. That’s the whole sentence. Weekends: The “hostel” transforms into a public café packed with couples on dates. Try showering or getting into your capsule while strangers sip lattes one meter away in their aesthetic dates. If you want to study discomfort in its purest and most immersive point, this is the place.

Loved this place! It was my first time in Japan and just had a 20hr layover so I decided to book a capsule hotel despite my friend's advice not to, since people can be noisy and you can't sleep, but I ended up loving the experience. The check in was smooth, the staff is very pleasant and will walk you through what to do. The space is what you see in the picture, a library of books and beds between. I booked a solo bed which was big enough for me, they have a charging port, a safe, a ledge to store some other stuff and a bar with hangers so you can hang clothes in the actual sleeping space. They gave you a free towel. You can also rent PJs and toiletries if you didn't bring them. People were very mindful of keeping themselves quiet, except one person who kept dragging their slippers. But I guess that's not the hotels fault. The bathrooms are clean, and they have the super fancy Japanese Toilets. Over all a great experience for me. Oh they give you earplugs too.

A bookstore you can stay overnight in. Hailed as one of the most unique hotel experience in Tokyo, booking a spot as you imagined, was a little troublesome unless you do so at least three weeks in advance. The concept is simple, a library-like hostel with sleeping quarters similar to that of a capsule hotel. Each bunk has limited space but enough for one or two depending on the size of your choosing. A two tiered curtain system acts as the door to your private sleeping chamber. Sound insulation was a bit of our concern, but guess what? We slept like babies throughout the night. Bathroom was clean and well organized. Towel rental runs about a buck and a half per towel (pajama rental is available as well). After a full day of sightseeing and touring, nothing is better than sitting down and reading a random book out of their selection. And yes, I found a picture book on nothing but poo~ and I read it page to page while sitting in the middle of the store. What can I say? I'm a man of taste and sophistication~

The other night John and I stayed in an amazing capsule hotel. We had planned on spending the night in Kyoto but instead we stayed in Tokyo at Bed and Book Capsule Hotel. It had a little cafe that served coffee, tea, and a variety of beers. Pages from the manga Akira hung from the ceiling and books in Japanese/English lined the wall. One of the capsules was big enough for the both of us, but we got two. It also had a little safe inside the capsule. It was a little hard to find but it was very clean. I was very happy we spent the night here.
