"How did it strike you on arrival? In the fray of Ikebukuro's bright bustle, with fan-favorite manga shops in the neon shadows of shopping complexes, Book and Bed Tokyo isn't the easiest to spot. But you shouldn't need to look far: It's a short walk from the subway station (so long as you take the right exit, C8). Inside the seventh-floor hostel, the vibe immediately turns into a hushed haven. What’s the crowd like?Young, bookish types. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Cozily set beneath a ceiling of pendent bulbs and suspended hardback books (in no alphabetical order) are pine bookshelves, plush royal-blue daybeds, and smooth concrete floors. The room itself, long and narrow, is cluttered in all the right ways, considering that a stocked wooden bookshelf within and alcove is the very definition of cozy nooks. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The cheapest of 52 bunks are in separate rooms, but guests booking the Bookshelf bunks are literally tucking themselves into the bookshelf. The variations are limited, all constructed like large pine boxes, but it's worth the extra penny to book the Standard bunk for some extra square footage. An overhead reading light, electrical outlets, and safety boxes are the only features, while there's also luggage storage underneath the bookshelf. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The books (around 3,200 titles, both English and Japanese) are a permanent collection (read: not for sale). But there's certainly a page or two we'd steal from the storied shelves if we could. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Communal bathrooms are all clean and orderly with a handful of private showers and a full lineup of sinks. What it lacks, however, are towels and toiletries, which the hostel sells in packs for a few dollars. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Don't leave your e-reader at home: There's free Wi-Fi. Room service: Worth it?There's a vending machine for drinks, but you'll need to head out into the buzzy neighborhood for grub. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The hostel doubles as a reading lounge, allowing avid readers to book day rates without staying the night. However, this also means that guests in the Bookshelf bunks are in plain view for any non-guests who are just there for the day. Luckily, the crowd tends to be one of those well-read, keep-to-themselves variety. Bottom line: worth it, and why? There aren’t a ton of amenities at this hostel, but if access to literature is your version of getting lit, it could very well be paradise." - Keith Flanagan

A great little hostel with a difference. The beer selection is excellent, and the book collection is very interesting - a lot of stuff on art and design, food, and travel. Plenty available in English, and lots of rare vintage magazines. A unique collection that's worth seeing on its own merits, and being able to get tipsy and have a bit of a sleep is a bonus. There's a microwave, so you don't need to shell out on food while you stay here. The shower situation is a bit annoying, in that there were no towels provided so I had to skip it, but everything seems very clean and modern. The bed could be a little more comfy, but I probably should have just asked for another pillow, the mattress itself was fine and my little cubby hole felt very safe and private.

I suppose it might depend on the person... but for me it was nearly perfect. The problems a lot of people have are for noise from music or talking since some beds are in the common area, (that's totally a valid complaint) but for me as a typically light sleeper at home I was able to sleep just fine after long days out. I don't think there was a time on my stay here where music was on after midnight, which is reasonable since this place technically isn't JUST for sleeping people. Earplugs are provided, just in case. If I had one complaint, it's that the rooms get really warm, or at least mine did. But! There are fans inside each one (also power outlets) so it wasn't much of an issue. Just a little one. The facility is super clean and tidy, and the showers are actually surprisingly great. The staff were great, helpful, and understood English. The location is fantastic, only a couple of minutes from Ikebukuro Station West exit in a atraight line. Overall, just a great place. I would definitely stay here again!

I knew this place was for me the second I walked in. It’s well themed, tasteful, clean, and calming. It’s an atmosphere well tailored to the specific type of person who comes for the spirit of bookishness, rather than just a place to stay. - There are lots of nice books in different languages. - The open reading area is very comfortable. - I found it very quiet. It’s mostly silent inside except for some soft music, which I enjoy. There are some outside noises at times but that didn’t bother me at all. - Staff speaks great English. - Proximity to Ikebukuro station is fantastic. - The industrial fixtures and color scheme are very nice. The lighting is just right. - The shampoo they provide smells lovely. - I read Big Fish.

Very quiet at night. Great library atmosphere. Bookshelf bunks are well sized & have a small safe, a light, a fan, and coat hangers. Midday books are of course in Japanese but there's enough in English to find a good read. There's no curfew but it's expected you don't make lots of noise after 12.

Really cool concept, the ambience of the place is nice and the decor is super cool. The idea of sleeping in a big bookshelf is as cool as it sounds. However, I have to knock stars off for the problems with sound. Everyone is basically in the same big room, and the bed nooks you sleep in have absolutely no sound insulation. This means actually sleeping in them is very hard if you're a light sleeper. They offer free earplugs and this helps, but still probably avoid this one if you're really in need of a good uninterrupted night's sleep.

Beautiful hostel with a sophisticated yet slightly rebellious personality. Hosts were very hospitable and enjoyed mingling with guests - all the staff I met were very fluent in English. The bunks were rather spacious, and for the most part, apart from a yelling kid this morning, it's rather quiet. There's an awesome book collection here by the way! They're not just for looks - they're highly curated! So take advantage of the books and nerd out all you want!

When you arrive, you have to make your own bed (which is kind of really hard due to the very limited space), you have to pay for towels or bring your own; if you want water you have to buy it too. And there is no shower gel, shampoo or conditioner in the bathroom (common shower room) either... The top bunkers are covered by a cloth that is easily taken off, which means your neighbors can very easily look at you in your bed or changing. The futon is also quite thin. The place is very stylish and the idea is pretty awesome (it's quite aesthetically pleasing), but the space is not exactly comfortable. I don't advice staying over for more that two nights.

Google
The place has a great atmosphere and is super cozy and comfy for reading. The staff are nice and helpful. The beds are clean though uncomfortable, but not anything different than you would expect from a hostel. It can be somewhat noisy as the beds are not seperated from the common area but ear plugs are provided. If you're staying in Tokyo i would definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
We stayed here on November 18th, it was a cold rainy day, and the place was somewhat hard to find. The 2 female employees working the night were beyond friendly and helpful. I'm so glad I heard about this place before traveling to Japan so I had a chance to book the only bigger "room" that's not an actual capsule. There are a lot of books and magazines, and people mind their own business. I totally recommend checking this gem out.

Yelp
Holy shit. Best 30.00 you'll ever spend. I'm in Tokyo and I needed a last minute vibe but with a unique twist. If I'm going to Japan I want the full experience. I checked in and the photos just don't do it justice. It's everything from a Harry Potter+childhood dream you could Imagine. Yes the banks are shared with strangers but it's so tranquil and beautiful and thousands of books are displayed to read!

Yelp
Really cool and unique concept. The sleep cubbies are pretty spacious. You must pay extra for a towel and it's credit card only for everything. The facility is really clean and has a great atmosphere. Be wary of how close you are sleeping to others - I was kept up basically all night by the girl in cubby next to me coughing loudly. You may not get a good nights sleep but it's still a cool spot.

Yelp
I loved the idea and the decor inside. Two separate floors. Worst night sleep of my trip due to a guy snoring very very loudly in the next bookshelf, not the fault of company. They have music playing relatively loud until late at night which makes it hard to read, but it was still a great experience with great staff and a good location.
