Meet the Women of Color Remaking One North Carolina Town Into a Destination That Celebrates Diversity

"Palestinian-American writer Etaf Rum, a New York Times best-selling author, has deep roots in Rocky Mount; she moved to the area when she was 19, eventually going on to teach at a nearby college. In 2019, Rum opened the café-bookstore Books & Beans in Rocky Mount Mills — an 82-acre entertainment, dining, and residential campus on the site of a restored cotton mill. "It was important for me to give a voice to women, minorities, and people of color through a diverse selection of books," she says. "Perhaps visitors can even leave with something that changes their perspective on the world around them." - Travel + Leisure Editors

I just moved to RM and so far this coffee shop reigns supreme in the area. Great atmosphere, very friendly baristas and good food. I recommend the sausage egg and cheese and an iced coffee! Plenty of parking in the lot across the street.

Stopped in as we were passing through to the beach, parking was easy and available right in front. Beautiful aesthetic with a great logo and quiet temperament, with a bookcase selling books in the corner. The staff were very warm and kind. The cappuccino was not well balanced, under extracted shot and the milk was over steamed. I switched over to the drip coffee which was a light roast and delicious. The menu looked interesting with mostly traditional brunch items, complemented by 4-5 sandwich options. Given the price and descriptions I was underwhelmed by the quality of ingredients. The oatmeal seemed like an instant oatmeal packet, the sandwich buns tasted like cheap mass produced hamburger buns. I got the impression it was less of a full kitchen and more of a microwave on a counter situation. Overall impression is the drip coffee was good, I would skip espresso drinks, atmosphere was amazing, and certainly a place I would come to read a book and drink some drip coffee. Probably would not plan to stop for a meal in the future.

Something has happened here ... The sandwiches are the same price, but they are TINY. Flavor of the pesto was good, but come on. No sides? Just a tiny, sad thing on a plate. It was sourdough, but when eating out, we expect nice, crusty sourdough, not soggy barely toasted bread. Not worth it. This is half a Bell Jar and then the Hemingway. $22 for both of these. What on earth. The woman working there was very sweet, but sheesh.

What an adorable little spot! Coffee is crisp and delicious. Atmosphere is chill with plenty of outdoor seating. Dog friendly with water bowls for our fur baby! The food was spot on. Delicious panini sandwich. Highly recommend! Customer service was fantastic too!

Books and Beans was a pleasant surprise. The customer service, food, and atmosphere was top tier. Pictured is a bacon, egg, cheddar and turkey bacon, egg, and cheddar on Brioche buns. Also pictured is a Chai tea and caramel latte and both were delicious. The gentleman at the counter was funny and knowledgeable. I highly recommend a visit here.

Such a cute little coffee spot! Located in Rocky Mount Mills this is a hidden gem. I was passing through and needed some caffeine so I stopped in. Customer service was great and the coffee was delicious. Such a fantastic vibe throughout, cute decor, very clean, and tons of books to choose from. Will be back when I'm in the area.

Books and Beans is a great little find. I have been here twice on my way through to get my Covid Vaccine. The location is in a nice little industrial complex, that looks like they repurposed an old building and gave it some great character. The sandwiches are amazing, and all named after famous authors and novels. The coffees are great too, but something I normally wouldn't get when grabbing a coffee surprised me, their chai. Probably the best chai I've tasted very well made! If you're looking for a great sandwiches and good drinks this is a great spot to try.

I really wanted to be giving another 5 star rating here, but stopping in to get something quick because I am traveling, and then getting in my car to get back on the road, and preparing to eat my sandwich on the road, only to find out it’s SO burnt, I feel very dissatisfied with the waste here. My coffee is good and if I only had ordered that, my experience would’ve been better. Also, if ‘books’ is the start of your business name, make the books more accessible. Why would there be a seating area in front of the book wall so the books being presented couldn’t actually be picked up and looked at because people are sitting in front of them?
