Borneo Gaya Lodge

Excellent location. The room was big enough and very clean. I had one without a window, but then I don't spend my time looking out of hotel windows. Extremely reasonable price. The owner, Walter, was very pleasant. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was the lack of amenities.

The worst place we have ever stayed. It might be on the cheaper side but not worth it. Beds are extremely uncomfortable and gave me and my partner bad backs, pillows are like concrete, there was mould in the bathroom and toilet so clearly has not been cleaned in a while. The double room was so small and cramped there is nowhere to put your bags. Staff were unable to help with tours. The owner is rude and has bad customer service. Aircon is dirty and ended up getting me sick. Breakfast is very diappointing just bread and jam so not worth eating, we went out and bought breakfast. Its also really noisy with traffic. There are so many nicer places to stay in Kota Kinabalu close by and in similar price range so stay away from this one.

Gaya lodge was the worst place my wife and I stayed over a month in Malaysia and Indonesia.||The staff on reception were inattentive and unable to provide tourist advice when we requested their help.||The breakfast is awful thin pieces of toast.||The lounge area was musty and lacking the cool open space that one wants when trying to chill out in KK.||Our double room was very very small. Just enough room for two 30 litre back packs and our day bags. ||The shower had hot water but was quite small.||To some extent I am ok with the size as the price was cheap, however the main reason I would advise against staying here is the absence of a nice pace to sit and the absence of friendly and useful staff.|

Good location in KK! Near the jetty, on Gaya Street. This is the more picturesque part of the city, close to restaurants and shops. The staff was helpful. The room was clean and quiet. Breakfast was included, though it wasn't great. Not a very busy place, at least when we were there, so it may not be the best hostel in which to socialize - though they do have a common area and sell beers for about 6 RM.

We had booked a room with window and 2 double beds. The morning we were checking in they wrote us they only had another room. When we turned up in the late evening, they showed us a tiny room, no windows and 2 bunk beds. Not quite the same. The worst part was actually that the receptionist didn't try to excuse it anyway. And we were told the price was the same. We ended up sleeping there and moved to the bigger room the next night. This was an ok room. Breakfast was at another flor. Simple with toast and jam, coffee and tea.|The lodge is in a nice part of KK.

The room is very simple and small but comfortable enough. Walter, the owner, is very communicative and helpful. The location is perfect, close to everything you could think of.

Normally I am not that picky but this hostel is really disgusting. Especially the toilets and showers are teeny tiny and not clean (mold). The floor is sticky and the kitchen makes no better impression. The common room is not cozy at all. Also there is a old lady living there, which is kind of irritating. The photos here on TripAdvisor seem not uptodate .

Great budget option in KK. Clean and well priced. There is water refill which is good for us. Center location and easy check in.
