19 Travel Goals to Accomplish Before 35

"Borobudur is a Buddhist temple in Indonesia whose winding walkway is lined with reliefs of Buddhist teachings; the higher up you get the harder the reliefs become, monks were supposed to figure out the meaning of each relief before moving on, and reaching the top means you’ve unlocked all the Buddha’s teachings — that’s a challenge I accept." - Matthew Kepnes

6 tips for visiting Borobudur in Indonesia - SilverKris

"Sitting on a hill in central Java and surrounded by volcanoes and lush green fields, this 9th-century monument is the world’s largest Buddhist temple and Indonesia’s most-visited historic site. Buried under jungle and volcanic ash until it was unearthed in the early 19th century, it now draws pilgrims and tourists for its palpable spirituality and striking stone architecture. The complex rises nearly 30 metres and is decorated with more than 500 Buddha statues, three central platforms with 72 large Buddhas seated inside perforated stupas, and almost 3,000 bas‑relief carvings that narrate Buddhist teachings. Practical tips for visitors: enter early (gates open at 6am) or book special pre-dawn tours for sunrise shots, but have alternate photographic plans (the western side offers misty valley views when sunrise is cloudy); the climb to the top is energetic—bring water and rest along the way—and dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), wear pants and comfortable shoes, and carry a light or rain jacket since there’s no shelter on the temple. To avoid local weekend crowds, aim for a midweek visit." - SilverKris

Here is much impressive! The guide of my group is very polite and really pay attention to her members. Her English skill is good, explaining clearly and in details. The atmosphere is very good even it’s sunny but windy, not too hot for me. RECOMMEND!!!

I just visited Borobudur Temple with my wife in late April and it was a terrific experience. This is our second visit here as we came in 2008 I believe. The temple is just as beautiful and awe inspiring the second time but the biggest difference now is the organization and enjoyment of the experience. As Indonesia has begun limiting the number of people that can climb the structure each day and at a given time, it has made the experience so much better. When we first went almost twenty years ago, it was a bit of a mess. So many people on the temple, it was not peaceful and taking a decent photo was nearly impossible. We felt the new setup was very well done. Shuttles take you to the gathering point for your tour and then you shuttle back to the exit. The grounds are beautiful, green, and well maintained. You still exit through the gift shop but even that is much nicer than previous years. It is hot, so wear sunblock, hat, and be respectful in how you dress. I highly recommend making the effort to visit this incredible place.

Took me 33 years from first learning about it to laying eyes on it. Totally worth the trip to see a magnificently well preserved heritage site. If i were to go a second time, i will (1) go after noon and stay till sundown because the midday sun was unbearably hot and the place was packed with people with umbrellas which made walking the narrow terraces difficult. (2) Follow the guide to the temple structure and then walk on my own in order to see all the reliefs on display from the bottom slowly to the top. Technically, one doesn’t need a guide if you’re an archaeology-architecture enthusiast who reads up on monuments before visiting 😆

Spectacular temple. Lots of visitors, but well managed with ticketed groups by hour. Guide was very knowledgeable and easy to understand English. You will be given special sandals to wear and protect the temple.

UNESCO world heritage, more than thousand year old Buddhist temple, also the largest Buddhist temple in the world. Very well managed, there are 2 types of ticket, one of campus and another of structure, those with campus ticket can go only near the structure but can’t climb on structure. But the structure ticket is limited, also fix slots, suggested to book in advance, the tour would be a group tour up to 20 person with a guide, enjoyed the group tour, have to report at the visitor center 15 min before group tour timing.

Borobudur Temple Legendary Buddha temple complex One of the most impressive places I’ve ever visited. The scale, detail, and spiritual atmosphere are just incredible. I joined the sunrise tour and it was 100% worth it—the view over the misty hills and the silhouette of the temple as the sun rises is unforgettable. The temple itself is massive, with thousands of carvings and Buddha statues. You walk in a circular path from the bottom to the top, symbolizing a journey to enlightenment. It’s not just sightseeing—it really feels meaningful. Tips: Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. Wear comfortable shoes—lots of stairs. Modest clothing is required, but they’ll give you a sarong at the entrance. There are guides available, and it’s worth hiring one to understand the history and symbolism. Facilities are decent—there are clean toilets, small cafes, and souvenir shops near the exit. It’s about 1.5 hours from Yogyakarta, and I’d recommend hiring a driver or booking a tour since public transport isn’t the best. Definitely a must-visit if you're in Central Java!

This site was high on my list while visiting Indonesia. It was beautiful and I am glad I went but not exactly what I was expecting. The complex and museum are huge. They make you wear sandals they give you to climb in which weren’t the most comfortable nor good for my back. I think it’s because of the grip and to make sure people won’t slip and fall. They run you through timed entry queues so make sure to buy tickets in advance. This makes sense or it would be over run with tourists and probably dangerous on the uneven and steep stairs. Worth seeing if you are in the area for sure. I recommend bringing an umbrella and/hat because the shade is minimal and even at 8:30am when we went quite intense. Also be prepared to walk farther in those sandals than just temple itself. You exit in the back and have to come all the way around and back to where the shuttle stop will pick you up to take you back to the museum.

MAGNIFICENT TEMPLE. Hard to know which road to take when driving there by motorbike when alone. Roads aren't to bad except for the fact theirs hardly any signs at all along the way. Was there at 7am to beat the crowds and was going to go to the top but would have had to wait til 11.30am so booked the ground level only tour for 400,000rupiah. A bit of a rip off. I thought I would have at least got up to the second tier for that kind of money. Well maintained and clean beautiful site. No real complaints except for the above. Buy a ticket in advance so you can get up to the top is my recommendation
