"At Boschendal, guests can slow down and savor “Le Pique Nique,” a pre-packed picnic basket that you can order in advance of your visit to the vineyard. When you arrive, collect your wicker basket filled with sweet and savory treats, pick up a bottle of wine to pair with your snacks, and find a spot under the pine trees to sit for the afternoon, relaxing and enjoying the sunshine. Boschendal is right on the edge of Stellenbosch, about an hour’s drive from Cape Town through the beautiful hills and valleys of the winelands. The owners transformed several farm laborers’ cottages into luxury accommodations, should you wish to spend the night after a day of vineyard tours, winetastings, and dining at the estate’s several restaurants."

Boschendal Farm Cottages, Nr Franschhoek, South Africa - Explore & Book

"We’re hard pressed to find a better place to base yourself in the winelands. Half way between the key towns of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, it's in the Drakenstein valley with stunning mountains aplenty. As one of the oldest working farms in South Africa (founded in 1685) it has oodles of heritage, and is renowned for its wonderful picnic scene enjoyed on their beautiful lawns with a glass of something cool. Pretty Cape Dutch architecture, and dappled oak tree avenues where ducklings waddle up and down, are only part of the story. Boschendal has been revitalised, making it a go-to location for its farm-to-table cooking, fresh produce and beautifully revamped cottages. These range from 1 to 5 bedrooms, with the 5 bedrooms being the more exclusive Cottage 1685 and Mountain Villa. You can choose to stay down in the "Werf" (farmstead) close to the deli, farm shop, wine tasting and restaurant; or up amongst the hillside fynbos where you're more remote. Either way, each of the 43 cottages has been well designed to give all you need to chill and unwind. It's great for families (there's a dedicated kids' club), foodies, hikers and even wild swimmers, thanks to its own dams. You have it all: history, nature, wine and a pretty darn comfortable place to hang your hat. Top-notch. Highs Beautiful location with mountain views, perfectly placed between the main Wineland hubs, and just 45 minutes from Cape TownWe loved the fresh, colourful cottage interiors, and the stunning mountain viewsVast grounds and immaculate gardens with lots to do on-site, from mountain biking and pony rides to wine tastingFlexi-catering: DIY using their farm produce in your own cottage kitchen or eat out on the estate, from breakfast (included) to deli pizzas and farm-to-fork dining at the Werf RestaurantCottages are great value for such high standards Lows You'll need a car if you stay in the Mountain Villa, Orchard, Retreat, Cow Shed or 1685 Cottages - they're over the main road and up a 2km farm roadSummer weekends are popular with people enjoying Boschendal picnics, but it quietens down later in the dayWedding parties often book all the Werf Cottages, so weekend availability can be limited in high seasonYou can hear some slight traffic at the Werf, but it didn't bother us" - Aidan Forestier-Walker

I stayed at the Mountain Villa for 7 days in October to attend and celebrate a wedding. The accommodations and customer service were outstanding. I have high expectations, due to working in hospitality for 13 years, and they far exceeded in every way. The staff was amazing, friendly and knew every guests name! Anzel, Geraldine, Christolene and Deshaan were impeccable hosts, chefs and friends while we were in the house. I would highly recommend a stay at Boschendal Wine Estate. This was the first vacation where I enjoyed amazing, tasty food and didn't gain a bunch of weight. The flavors and presentation were amazingly delicious and the wine was perfect. I especially enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc! I give this 5 stars across the board. Loved having fresh towels and beds made every day. What an experience.

We booked in advance a picnic whilst our day on the wine tram. The food was incredible, everything was fresh and tasted amazing. The picnic area was lovely and quiet, with garden games around to play, the addition of a blanket and picnic chairs were great. Would definitely recommend booking a picnic!

Our children (aged 8 and 4) spent 3.5 days enjoying the Tree house holiday programme and it was absolutely magical! The programme is designed and run by a wonderfully personable & experienced school teacher, Andrea, and all staff members were so warm and dedicated. The kids ran in each day desperate to get started and built fantastic relationships throughout the week. Each day was themed, but tailored to the individual children, their interests and needs. The setting is perfect for parents wishing to enjoy everything that Boschendal has to offer (shout out to the excellent coffee stand at the farm shop) but this offers the opportunity to explore more of Stellenbosch & Franschhoek knowing your kids are having even more fun than you!

1st time here to boschendal.A very beautiful and family friendly estate. They only get 4 stars for me as the restaurant and farmer shop are not priced for locals but more tourists or upper middle class. Very expensive! The restaurant was fully booked but the prices on the menu didn't make us stick around. We settled for delicious lamb pies and croissants from the deli which were excellent! My son enjoyed the playground by the tree house and beautiful gardens.

We stopped in for a picnic on a Saturday afternoon. The setting, service and food were amazing. Unfortunately, they had live music and it was so loud that we really didn’t enjoy the experience. We’d planned to relax and chat with our friends in the shade over some wine while the kids played in the nearby play area, but the music was so loud that we couldn’t comfortably hear one another. We ate quickly and left. I’d return again if there wasn’t live music (or it was quiet enough to still carry on a conversation). Otherwise, I’d recommend another winery if you’re looking for a calm relaxing outdoor picnic experience.

We were genuinely excited to visit this estate, but unfortunately, our experience left us feeling quite disappointed. From the moment we arrived, it was difficult to figure out where the festival was taking place. The layout was confusing, and everything seemed so spread out that it made navigating the space feel more like a chore than a celebration. It would have made a big difference if there had been golf carts or a shuttle service to help guests move between areas more comfortably. We were especially looking forward to tasting the wines, but when we asked about the options, the server informed us that they were out of everything except samosas and spring rolls. That was incredibly disheartening, especially considering how much we had anticipated this part of the visit. In the end, we decided to leave and visit another estate instead. While the grounds were undeniably beautiful, the overall atmosphere felt a bit disjointed. Aside from one of the vineyard workers and the gate guard, who were both warm and welcoming, the rest of the staff came across as somewhat distant. The experience lacked the hospitality and cohesion we had hoped for.

One of the most stunning wine estates I have ever been to. I have been here a couple of times and have never been disappointed. Their wine and food is excellent. You can never go wrong with choosing a date at Boschendal. They have a Friday night market with lots of different food choices and live music. Their wine tasting is also a good choice. My parents even had their wedding reception here many years ago. Definitely recommend going here no matter the occasion!

Stopped here on a wine tram experience and the wine was definitely tasty. We ordered the charcuterie board and it was also very tasty but I wish we would have known that it was meat and vegetables only, not meat and cheese. It seems like there was one board that was meat and another board that was cheese. The overall experience was good and we loved the cozy and intimate setting in the tasting room.
