The 22 Best Day Trips From London

"The best day trip from London for: a cultural day outHow to get there from London: the fast train from London St Pancras takes 1 hour 25 minutes. It’s no secret that this Victorian seaside town has had quite the hipster renaissance in recent years, sparked mostly by the arrival of the Turner Contemporary gallery in 2011 and spurred on by a slew of new openings and a wave of Londoners upping sticks and moving down to the Kent coast. For a cultural outing, the waterside Turner Contemporary is still a must. Entry is free so it’s worth popping in even if you’ve never heard of the artists on show, and the shop has some nice local products. For more contemporary art head to Crate, an artist-led project space in an old printworks. If you’d prefer something older—much older—wander over to the most ancient building in town, the Tudor House, a Grade II-listed 16th-century timber-framed house on King Street. It’s on your route from the seafront to the mysterious Shell Grotto, a spooky set of underground tunnels covered in more than four million shells. A trip to Margate isn’t complete without a few hours in Dreamland, whether it’s for some spins on the rides or to see one of the amusement park’s impressive line-up of gigs in the evenings. Do take a stroll around town to hit up the vintage shops selling retro clothes, furniture, and homewares, where you can still find some decent bargains. And don’t forget to head over to Cliff Terrace to visit the flagship store of cult natural skincare brand Haeckels, which makes divine-smelling beauty products using seaweed gathered on the beach nearby. Speaking of the beach, if you want to go swimming walk along the coast to Walpole Bay Tidal Pool, a man-made sea lagoon where you can find calm waters and steps for easier access. If you arrive early (or stay the night), tuck into cracking breakfast at Storeroom coffee shop or at Cliffs, where there’s also a record shop, a hair salon, and a yoga studio. In fact, the whole up-and-coming area of Cliftonville is worth exploring. After all that roaming, great seafood can be found for dinner at either Angela’s or Hantverk & Found—reserve a table in advance though, as both get booked up. –Sonya Barber If you decide to stay over: The best beds in town are at The Reading Rooms, a boutique b&b in a restored Georgian townhouse a few minutes’ walk from the seafront. Be sure you don’t have to rush off in the morning as they’ll bring breakfast to your room so you can eat it overlooking the leafy square. Book now with The Reading Rooms Read more about Margate's best things to do" - Anna Prendergast, Condé Nast Traveller

🌊 Botany Bay Beach – A Hidden Gem on the Kent Coast! 🌿 Absolutely breathtaking views! 😍 From the iconic white chalk cliffs to the peaceful blue waters, Botany Bay is one of the most beautiful spots I’ve visited in the UK. Perfect for a relaxing walk, taking in nature, or just escaping the noise of everyday life. 🏖️ The cliffs make the views unforgettable, and the sound of the waves is so calming. Whether you’re here for photography, a family picnic, or just to breathe in the sea air, this place delivers every time. ✨ Free to visit ✨ Clean and peaceful ✨ Great for cliff walks and exploring rock pools Highly recommend adding this beach to your weekend getaway list — it’s a true coastal treasure! 💙

Nice beach..calm and went there on easter weekend..we didn't had much crowd there... Car park to beach is good 20-30 min walk through designated walking trails.. As this a blue flag beach, you won't find any shops near y by except one ice cream shop which closed by 4 pm..

Easily accessible sandy beach in a small recessed cove area with unique chalk cliff features. The beach kiosk sells everything from food, drinks, including alcohol, to all forms of beach paraphernalia for children and adults. Cards are accepted too.

Clean and sandy beach, clear water, close to a restaurant and shop with breathtaking views. Parking is readily available however can be packed very quickly on the weekends and when the weather is good. No service (vodafone) when you’re at the beach front but the restaurant nearby has free wifi and once you walk up from the beach you get service. HIGHLY recommend to go when winds are low and the sun is out.

Nice beach, if you are driving come early. Parking at the street for free. Toilets at the entrance. Don't forget to bring your drinks and food! I was surprised that the water was not too bad.

Absolutely stunning seaside break on the windswept north Kent coast. We enjoyed the long walks along the beach and cliff tops. The coastline is beautiful. Please note there’s limited facilities for toilets or eateries. Take your own food and water with you. Botany Bay beach is a lovely Sandy beach and you have to take some giants steps to get to the beach , we struggled with our stroller as we had taken 5 months old baby so we had to carry the stroller and the baby maybe a baby carrier would be convenient if taking a small child

Can I just say - this is such a gem amongst Kent beaches, particularly for photography! I’ve held several pre-wedding shoots here and no matter the weather, this is a stunning location. I’ve never had parking issues and there are several entrances to the beach from the road above. It’s very dog-friendly and stretches for a good while so even when it’s busy, you can find a quieter spot, especially past the cliff “gateway”.

Away from the nearby hustle and bustle of Margate Beach lies Botany Bay Beach - a short trip worth taking for the layout of the cliffs which nets you some amazing photo opportunities. I can only imagine how busy the beach must be on a balmy Summers day as it would make for an ideal location to come and relax, swim and catch some rays. Away from the Summer season it seems to be the perfect place to come and enjoy the experience of listening to the orchestral roar of the waves etched by a very pretty landscape. If you want to escape the hectic chaos of Margate Beach for some peace and calm then Botany Bay will fill that role in every way.
