On the Grid : Botequim da Graça

"Botequim is a bar that offers poetry nights and live music accompanied by snacks, tea and cocktails. Open also during the day, it has a retro atmosphere, decorated with vintage furniture old books and old records. It was here that during the decades of 70 and 80, many of the Portuguese bohemian intelligentsia gathered for a glass of wine and a night of tertulia. It may be the last place in Lisbon where you can actually smoke inside." - v-a

This is a very small restaurant near Jardim da Graca. You can also sit outside, which adds to the charm. We tried various puff pastries that I can highly recommend. The portions were very large and filling. Price-wise, it was extremely fair for us. After eating, you can walk to Jardim da Graca, where you'll find a beautiful view of a part of the city. The combination of great food, reasonable prices, and the nearby scenic spot makes this place a wonderful choice.

They have a fusion steak which is cooked in the oven and it’s sooooo good

Google
Such a amazing moment. The restaurant seems not very impressive at first, but the food is very cheap and very tasty (i had vegetable and mozza toast). The waiters are extremely nice and reactive - they offered us free shots. It felt like an authentic, local lisbon experience.

As I understand the food depends a lot on which shift the chefs are working. I was there during the day and in the evening. In the afternoon it was the tastiest food I ate during my first three days in Lisbon. But in the evening we could not finish our meals because there was too much oil. Nevertheless, I recommend the restorant, because both the district and the atmosphere of something very locan, free, with an LGBT vibe and friendly barmens - everything like I like. 🩵

One of my favorite places in Lisbon! Super good food (all they do is amazing, never tried smth that wasn’t good) and for a fair price. Also they have a open area which is perfect specially during summer and all the people who works there are super nice… but i feel that the owner should invest in more staff because the 2 people that works there sometimes need to do a miracle to serve everybody when its full… i feel sorry for them because they are amazing but sometimes is just too much for 2 people. Anyway, try the vegetarian options! The ones with seitan are PERFECT!!

Yelp
I wish I would have taken a picture of the "before", but the food here is a 10/10! It's very affordable and the portions are HUGE! If you like smoked meats or sausage in general, try the algheira with tomatoes! The wine was also very reasonably priced and of course delicious and our serves was kind enough to place us a table outside even though they had barely started setting up!

Yelp
Fun place with great, tasty food! The service is also excellent! Try the puffed pastry with Brie in it!

Yelp
I really love this small and quaint place. It's located on top of a hill, by the Baixa elevator. Just walk across the street and you have a great view of Alfama/Lisbon. After taking in the view, come to this place!!! It's a tapas place and the servers are jolly and animated. Note though that everyone here smokes!!! If you can stand that, then come on in. It takes you back to an older time. The decor, the old books, the wood paneling and wooden bar all adds to an amazing old school feel. You can find people just enjoying time with their friends, and when I was there someone was writing a book. I really felt like I was taken back to a different era. Food portion is great, can't complain, they have ginja. This is really a place to go if you want to intake a bohemian, different era type of feeling. It's also a place to drink!! Note: everyone smokes and there is one patio window/door (other than the main entrance), and the smoke really doesn't escape the establishment.

Yelp
Lovely locals spot, good for people-watching locals, if you're a tourist like me. Moderate-sized cafe with the usual array of drinks, port, etc. Possibly some food as well. It's a casual place, with simple furniture and has a distinct character to it. Bathroom is one single-occupancy cramped room with urinal nearly overflowing but otherwise pretty clean.

Yelp
Delicious food in a cosy setting. First and foremost- the food... I got a substantial bowl of warm couscous which was topped with roasted vegetables, spinach and thick slices of real Parmesan cheese. My husband got the cod pastry, which was flavourful and filling. The red wine that we selected was full of body and texture. We got to decide between two wines at no extra cost. The restaurant is tucked away along one of one of Lisbon's winding streets. The walls are painted a deep forest green and are lined with shelves of books. Loved the bohemian vibe. Notes: - smoking is permitted - our waitress spoke English and helpfully translated the menu for us, as well as providing suggestions

Yelp
More than a hole in the wall or dive bar as some have described it. When we came everyone was eating. It's more small restaurant with drinks. The food was GREAT and good quality. I'm not big on meat and this place is very vegetarian friendly. I had the goat cheese, tomato, and spinach pastry. It was awesome. There were several couscous dishes I wanted to try, but I wasn't hungry enough. The pastry comes with a salad and chips. My husband got one with Brie and onion jam. It was very good but a tad too sweet for our tastes. We had dessert and 1 beer and 1 water for 19 euro. Pretty dang affordable!! This place has a good vibe with nice staff. The menu is all Portuguese, and perhaps r friendly server was very helpful.

Yelp
The walk from the bottom of the hill is well worth it. Has seating for about 25 people so very intimate. They only have menus in Portuguese which is fine because the waiter is willing to walk you through it or just pick some of his favorites for you. Food and beer is also very reasonably priced.

Yelp
Tiny place on top of the hill in Alfama. We climbed on top and had a nice cocktail at the bar just around the corner overlooking the area. That was a nice start. So - Botequim is very much of a dive bar more than a good restaurant. It's very cheap so if what's your after is an affordable meal this may be the place for you. People smoke inside and given it only has 8 or so tables, it gets quiet stuffy and smokey in there. Something to consider before going here. We had some sort of pirogue filled with feta cheese served with salad. Wine was ordered by the jug and was very cheap. The taste of the food nor the wine was nothing extraordinary, as one wouldn't expect either. We ordered some other small plates too, all pretty bland. The bathroom experience, I do remember. It was not clean and I had to tiptoe on the wet floor when I got in. It really felt dirty and inevitably it also made me think of whether the kitchen had been properly cleaned lately. I think this is a cheap place for students, if you like that, you should go. If you want good food or a nice view, you probably want to consider something else.

Yelp
Good music and drinks. Didn't eat but food looked good. People can smoke inside so it is smoky.

Yelp
Food is truly amazing. The chef does a twist on authentic Portuguese food. Our service was awesome and takes his time to explain the ingredients in the dishes!

Yelp
On a rainy day, this was a nice refuge away from the street with delicious and inexpensive food. The bacon, mushroom, and beef pastry was delicious and reminded me of a mix between the classic bifana sandwich and a borek. It also came with a large side salad and potato chips, a good deal for the price! Only downside was being surrounded by smoke.

Yelp
This is a little hole in the wall that serves beautiful food. We couldn't read the Portuguese menu so asked the waiter for his recommendation for two vegetarians. He brought us a pastry wrapped seitan and vegetable dish and also couscous topped with roasted vegetables, fresh spinach and Parmesan. Both were out of this world. I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Beware, portions are much larger than we have been accustomed to! We ended up with a billion pounds of delicious food that the courteous staff was more than happy to package up the remainder in transportable packaging.

Yelp
My friends and I stayed nearby and not being able speak Portuguese we were hard pressed to find some local food that was delicious and cheap. We found Botequim. We loved it so much that we ended up going there every night at the end of each day that we were in Lisbon. I think we were the only tourists who visited, but the staff was very friendly. We loved the sangria, cheese and meat plates and desserts. They'll even help with recommending dishes. If you find yourself in Alfama looking for a great meal experience among the locals, come to Botequim!!

Yelp
Really lovely drinks, good food and good price. Perfect for low key evening drinks with good music.
