In a building more than a century old, the Bottger Mansion is a bed and breakfast inn just steps from Albuquerque's Old Town Plaza. For the past dozen years, Kathy and Steve have been the innkeepers and owners, and they are warm hosts who are well-traveled with strong ties to New Mexico, who can also offer good advice about where to dine, drink, and sightsee in the area.
The warm pink building is fronted by a small lawn with a few tables and chairs. Inside, the inn is lovingly decorated, intimate and rustic. The sunny communal dining area has access to the kitchen, with fresh baked cookies, tea options, and a Keurig offering a 24-hour coffee besides freshly brewed coffee in the mornings, and a small refrigerator available for use. A cozy living room has a fireplace, books, and a PC terminal.
Bottger has seven distinct rooms on two levels. The Erna Fergusson is the only one designed for two single guests, featuring two twin beds in a corner room with windows all around and a spacious bathroom with a clawfoot tub and shower. It is charming and very comfortable. Despite its old-fashioned appearance, it is outfitted with modern amenities such as plenty of outlets, inclusive and strong wi-fi, and air conditioning. Photos in the rooms and halls detail the stories about the people for whom the rooms are named.
Morning coffee starts at 7 AM with a local blend, while breakfast prepared by the innkeepers is served between 8:30 - 9:30 AM. The breakfast course for the day is fixed but allergies/preferences are taken into consideration. Varying from day to day, ours was a refreshing fresh fruit assortment with homemade sorbet and a delicious, savory spinach and cheese frittata. Some recipes are listed on the inn's website.
The innkeepers are reachable via phone or text, for any questions or concerns. Guests can park in one of the reserved parking spots in the municipal lot across the street. There is no dedicated space to hold luggage if arriving or departing outside of check in/out times but the innkeepers will try to accommodate if it is possible.
This unexpected oasis so close to the Plaza is a perfect place to base a short stay in Albuquerque.
