San Francisco’s Little Spot Cafe Is Closing Following Eviction - Eater SF

"Boudin Bakery — the oldest continuously running business, let alone bakery, in San Francisco — is ringing in its 175th anniversary this year, per SFist. As the legend goes, founder Isidore Boudin, an immigrant from Burgundy, France, started the business with a bit of sourdough starter he got from a fellow prospector in 1849. He grew it into a bustling bakery and, eventually, horse-drawn carriage delivery service, shipping bread all over the city. One-hundred and seventy-five years is quite the tally, and a good reason to stop by for a loaf." - Justine Jones

Boudin Review - Fisherman's Wharf - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"This sourdough bread institution is iconically SF as railing against driverless cars. So naturally Boudin is a tourist magnet, and the fact that it’s the city’s longest operating bakery is the draw. The flagship Fisherman’s Wharf location is in a warehouse-like space with a cafe, a coffee kiosk, and a marketplace full of Golden Gate Bridge-branded mugs and dish towels. Expect a loud, chaotic scene. Everyone’s here to snap photos of the bread loaves randomly shaped like bears, scorpions, and crabs, and eat clam chowder bread bowls—they’re surprisingly good considering you’re in the Times Square of SF. " - Lani Conway

Boudin Bakery SFO Airport Review - SFO Airport - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"You visited the city for the first time and never got a bowl of the San Francisco treat (no, not the rice pilaf). A pre-flight chowder in a sourdough bread bowl is in order. The SFO outpost of the city’s famous, long-running bakery is serving up the New England-style soup in the international terminal, along with salads, sandwiches, and wraps. It’s counter-service (read: quick), and you can order online for pick-up if the countdown to departure is way too close. " - Lani Conway

How to Make Homemade Sourdough Bread Bowls - Eater SF

"Of course, sourdough bread bowls never leave the menu at Boudin Bakery, that great tourist trap, which claims to have a mother starter from a gold miner." - Becky Duffett

Google
We had to try authentic sourdough bread in San Francisco! Boudin's does its baking on the premises, and it has fresh and delicious items.

Mridi Wehls

Google
This lil place is so sad. It essentially depleted our appetite. We ordered a pesto sandwich and there was zero pesto in it. I wonder why they just didn't state that they are out of pesto and I should order something else. The bread was super stale and too hard to bite into. There is no seating, and also no kids menu here like they have at other sour boudin locations. Our reaction was that perhaps this location should be closed or remodeled or retrained to help the overall brand.

Google
Visited this place, first time, was packed but only 30 minute wait. Sourdough bread basket and butter, soft and tender crust and butter enhanced the great taste! Ordered with fanily-stew entree so delicious and very tender meat but small portion, clam chowder bread bowl was good but not the best I've had still tasty ($17.95 a little expensive) fish and chips were okay loved the fish not too crunchy and not greasy fries were soft and chewy a texture I like Cole slaw was good cost was around $24) margarita pizza and pepperoni pizza for $13 and size was bigger than expected, thin chewy crust, great flavor!

Alicia Draper

Google
Better than other places that serve clam chowder in a sourdough bowl. This bread was ultra fresh and the soup was a perfect consistency. Enjoyed the large Caesar salad as well. Thanks!!

Google
The locals location (not crazy busy) Fair prices, amazing sandwiches ($10.99 to $14.99) and even sourdough pizza at this location! I still need to try the mac and cheese. Try the multigrain bread with the turkey sandwich. Hard to beat how fresh the bread is. Also cookies and brownie bars!

Google
This little Boudin location opens at 6am. Perfect for an early snack. I had their ham cheese croissant $4.25 and a cup of clam chowder $7. The croissant is not bad. They don't heat it up though; you know, to melt the cheese. The clam chowder came with a little piece of sourdough bread to dip into the soup. Quite frankly, the clam chowder at Safeway had more clams. I did enjoy this cup of chowder. There are much better clam chowder throughout the city. Boudin is good if you are in a hurry and don't want to sit down for some soup. Service is excellent (if you know about the one person in-store policy.)

Google
Opens early, only to-go is available in this bakery. Clam chowder soup is thick and a bit on the salty side. But have it with their signature bread is nice.

Aron Dsouza

Google
A good selection of various sourdough bread and well as artisanal baked bread is available here. The Bakery is famous for the Clam Chowder or the Tomato Soup which is served in the hollow Sourdough bread. We tried the Tomato soup, it was served along with some croutons for garnish. One order is enough for two people. A must try place!!

Yelp
So my neighbor in Denver has this Sour Dough obsession So when I went back to my house in the Richmond District the lightbulb went off....lets get him a loaf of Boudins amazing bread Still as dope as it ever was. I love stuff that is consistently good since 1849 My neighbor was in tears... and yes its that good

Yelp
Sourdough bread loaves are tasty. Reasonable prices. Polite service. Other items look good. I will try them.

Yelp
I'm disappointed. Many moons ago I came here as a kid, and wanting to give it another try, I stopped by. Inside, the store is a little cramped; it has a decent selection of baked goods including various loaves of bread and some pastries. Seeing that they were selling sourdough pizza, I ordered the bruschetta. It came out within less than 10 minutes, which can be either a good or bad sign, this time it was the latter. Outwardly, it looked like a bigger version of a Lunchables pizza with a similar taste but without the nostalgia. The undercarriage was soft without even the slightest crispiness. The cheese was bland and the tomato sauce, had that signature canned bitter taste and there was not the slightest taste of bruschetta. The only slightly redeeming feature was the sourdough crust, which gave it a small ounce of flavor. I have had tastier frozen pizzas in my life. For fourteen dollars, this is really not it Boudin.

Yelp
Boudin Bakery is the oldest continually operating business in San Francisco, founded in 1849, and this branch on 10th & Geary has been around over 100 years! Very reasonably priced, I ordered a half turkey and avocado sandwich with clam chowder to go. Service was laid back and efficient. It's a grab-and-go place where regulars grab a coffee or meal, so we're here for the bread, not the atmosphere. The sandwich was ok, but I love their creamy clam chowder.

Yelp
It is classic San Francisco sourdough - that's almost all that needs to be said! Dear Hubby and I were passing through The City on Monday and made the pilgrimage to Boudin's in the Avenues. He was able to grab a parking place out front while I dashed into their retail take-away space. A full complement of various types of sourdough filled the baker's racks. They were all nicely labeled to make it easy to see what varieties were ready for purchase. I was interested in the olive bread, but went with classic sourdough. Purchased two loaves - one I had sliced as we were taking it to our grandson as a gift. The other I asked to be placed in a plastic sleeve to preserve the freshness to bring home to SoCal. It arrived in great shape! This retail bakery space is small but mighty. Not fancy, but not just utilitarian, either. It has a modest vibe, and the stars of the show are the bread loaves. A very friendly gentleman was handling the orders and elevated my visit with our brief conversation. It's not just a taste from my childhood, it's also a connection to all the wonderful flavor journeys that sourdough evokes. Long live Boudin! I wish them endless years of continued success. It's really helpful to have locations in multiple places to be able to enjoy the goodness of their baked breads and pastries.
google avatar

Brannon Y.

Yelp
4 stars because I ordered 2 clam chowder bread bowls, but they forgot one of the bread bowls... Good chowder though. They also perfected sourdough bread. The clam chowder was good - more viscous than I'm use to, but I'm from SoCal, so I'm not sure if that's how they make it out here or not. 7.8/10 for me! This Boudin is just a store front, so no seating available and all orders were to-go. The inside of the store was very small, but cozy. Felt warm and homely, nice vibe. There were maybe 4 people ahead of me in line, and my food probably came in about 20ish minutes. Not the fastest but I'd wait for it again.

Yelp
Great Sandwiches, Soups, and Breads. I try to frequent this spot when I can, it's a little far away from me but worth the drive.

Elaine F.

Yelp
Loooooong time customer- for the obvious reason- best bread in SF ! But I don't understand the unhappy unfriendly staff. At least the women in the morning ( opening shift). Too difficult to say good morning? Hello ? !! Small talk seems to be a lost art. FYI: you get better tips when you're friendly!!!
google avatar

Don K.

Yelp
Boudin in San Francisco is famous for its sourdough bread, which pairs perfectly with their clam chowder served in a bread bowl. It's an iconic experience, blending rich, creamy soup with freshly baked bread. If you enjoyed the clam chowder, you might also like their other soups or sandwiches served with sourdough. The bakery's location at Fisherman's Wharf offers a great view and the chance to watch sourdough being made!

Yvette C.

Yelp
Long time customer. Love this bread, love the staff. It's so sad to see the comments where people withhold tips. Never had one rude interaction and with the staff that had been there longer it's more friendly. In life you get what you give.
google avatar

Carlos G.

Yelp
4 stars because the bread is the best...don't think I'll order sandwiches here though anymore....had the turkey and avocado on sourdough...aside from the bread being good the sandwich had no flavor..would have been better with oil and vinegar, etc. If they had it I wasn't offered it...other than that great service and excellent pastries..it can get tight in there so you may have to wait outside. Parking is another story ...good luck if you go later in the day or around lunch..try calling ahead

Yelp
Everything is good , the sandwiches are simply delicious and divine , the oatmeal cookies are so good you can't eat just one , I'd love to know where I could but them unless they make them in house , and the clam chowder is the best , don't beat yourself, treat yourself.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty abysmal service. I tried to redeem my coupon for a free cookie on my birthday and they wouldn't accept it. Even though it was my birthday and I had an email from them. And this was on my birthday. So on my birthday, this place actively humiliated me in front of the other people in line, by making me give the cookie back. They wouldn't help at all try to troubleshoot what was wrong. The low point of birthdays for me in recent years, all thanks to the boudin bakery on 10th Avenue. What a shame. Don't go here; the people working here suck. I also reached out to Boudin before writing this review. I got a reply from their corporate office saying they'd forwarded it along to the manager at this store. Never heard a peep from the manager. So not only is this store managed by a jerk, but but a cowardly one at that.
google avatar

Motoko D.

Yelp
This is a takeout only place. There is no place to sit, so we ordered a bread bowl with clam chowder to the nearby park. The soup was super hot, so it was difficult to pour it in a bread bowl. We still enjoyed it though.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm fortunate to have a bakery of Boudin located in the Richmond District of San Francisco. My visits number 1 or 2 times each month depending on how quickly I go through Bread, and if my schedule allows multiple visits to pickup a large oval of sliced Sourdough. The shop has a great fresh bread selection, and the loaves can be requested sliced. If you are local make sure to use their mobile application, this will reward you with a monthly bread credit. As for parking it's very easy in the morning or on Sunday.

Yelp
Having Dinner at a friend's house for Thanksgiving and want to bring something uniquely SF, pick up a turkey shaped sourdough. Served 20 of us and my homesick San Francisco family appreciated a taste of San Francisco.
google avatar

Yelp
Love coming here. This place has the best assortment of breads of all the locations and therefore my favorite location. From what I understand, the breads are made here and then distributed to the other locations. Prices are cheaper here as well. Always incredibly fresh and tasty. Staff for the most part are usually helpful and friendly. Small location so, only a few people allowed at a time. Plenty of metered street parking available.

Jill Y.

Yelp
DO NOT order the Caesar salad at this Boudin. They only use the bottom part of the romaine lettuce, and the edges have turned brown. There are no green leafy romaine lettuce. I think they save the green leafy part for the sandwiches and put the white bottom part in salads. Plus, they don't use sourdough croutons, but the cheap packaged kind. I haven't encountered this at the Stonestown Boudin, just the 10th Ave. store. Makes me wonder what they do to the other salads.
google avatar

Trina W.

Yelp
Over-hyped, the chowder was thick and tasted over processed. The bread bowl was super hard. It was nice to have a warm place to wait out of the rain. Our server was really stressed out by the number of tables he had. The bloody mary wasn't tasty at all. It was a very expensive lunch mistake. It's rushed and you are nothing but a paying customer here. Get in and get out.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
Very good. Fresh bread all the time. I highly recommend this place. The make good clam chowder .
google avatar

Helen L.

Yelp
Caesar salad with bun, under $10. Where can you beat that price? Garlic crunchy croutons , or am i dreaming? Generous portion of chicken. Two condiment container of yummy dressing. I'm going to call it two salad meal. Way too big for one seating. The ladies are fast with the order. The lemon bar was just ok. More crust than lemon. While waiting, three different customers came in to order coffee at 3 pm! Must be good organic coffee. This is the best Boudin! Thank you!
google avatar

Debbie T.

Yelp
I can't delete the draft review that I started months ago. It was a one star rating. The loaf sour dough bread fell way short for the first time since the 90s. The large round loaf was so light. No chew and bland. I thought I'd go back and try again before I posted a review. It hasn't happened. We've been buying sour dough from artisan bakers now. Giving a 3-star just in case it was an unfortunate off bake.
google avatar

Bobby B.

Yelp
Great food, great prices, but very bad customer service. This place has changed, and they got rid of all the nice employees that worked here for many years. Me and my sister visited this location today and we wanted some Dutch crunch slices. The lady with the ponytail in the back of her head (cashier) was very rude, obnoxious, didn't answer our questions, threw my sister's change down, and heated up her rolls without telling her. Lady, if you don't want to do your job please go home or quit and someone else would be glad to have your job. From now on, I'll go to the Fisherman's Wharf location!!!
google avatar

Lisa X.

Yelp
Boudin is quintessentially San Francisco. I used to love their clam chowder but now it's more like potato chowder. I don't get their pizza concept at all, I feel like it's overpriced. I do like their sourdough breads though I try not to eat too much carbs nowadays. Anyhoo, 3.5 stars.
google avatar

Denise C.

Yelp
Boudin is downtown ..after going to dentist I walked by and saw this original boudin ..I got a margherita pizza and clam chowder..props to the best dad only dad ....he had really good taste and he was so kind ...San Francisco was a playground ..boudin sf

Yelp
As much change as takes place in a city, it's still reassuring that some things, some institutions, abide. Such is Boudin. At least for now. This here is an OG of OG, one of the bakeries San Francisco proudly claims its own. I and millions others have loved their sourdough, from the moment we ever tasted it growing up. Chewy, crunchy, tangy, aromatic.. just a wonderful emperor of breads. The Richmond District bakery location was around long before the chain launched its way into mall and shopping plazas. You have a real city sidewalk here, with a rather unassuming store-front. Inside is a continual supply of the most glorious of baked savoury loaves that will have those of you keto culters questioning your life/diet choices. The success of Boudin is borne out in the presence it has in many suburbs and shopping malls dotted around the Golden State. Even in some rough economic times, which eventually pass, our golden sourdough state of existence has never been better, thanks owed to San Francisco and the legacy of Boudin.

Alberto D.

Yelp
The chowder was amazing. The sandwich could use a little sprucing up the bread was good but it was mostly all bread. They could have used more meat and veggies inside.
google avatar

Vanessa J.

Yelp
The chowder was good. The tuna sandwich was horrible. The bread was so hard. I ate the inside and threw out the bread.
google avatar

Laurie E.

Yelp
My go to for fresh bread! They have an amazing variety (more than you can find at their bakery/cafes). And if you didn't know, the prices are slightly cheaper (ie 2lb sourdough is $6.99+SF mandate compared to $7.69 at Stonestown and $4.99 for the 1lb compared to $5.49 at Stonestown). They have more food options too. You can order several types of sandwiches, soup & chowder, salads individual pizzas, plus Papa Steve's larger sized pizzas. Inside is small, and there's no place to sit or eat (inside or out). They used to have some outdoor seating but they went away during Covid lockdown. Service is always quick and efficient.
google avatar

Sharika M.

Yelp
We were excited to try some San Francisco sourdough! We were underwhelmed. This location is super small. We thought there would be some breakfast sandwhiches like with eggs but there was not. We ended up getting a cheese focaccia. They're huge! The bread was well made, crispy on the outside and super soft in the inside. The red sauce and cheese on top were of low quality and had no flavor. Many customers came in and grabbed multiple loaves. I wonder if this is something more for the locals??? I'd suggest having entrees or grab and gos made of sourdough bread for tourists to enjoy.

Eve O.

Yelp
This review reflects one bad experience after years of excellence. The "Santa" bread purchased on Christmas Eve was underbaked and inedible and was only used for compost.
google avatar

Alexandra B.

Yelp
This is a small location located in the Richmond district in San Francisco. Parking is easy with plenty of meters nearby. I have stopped here at multiple occasions when with friends or family who had come for a visit to the Bay Area. I usually stop here to buy bread and some To-Go sandwiches so we can eat them while hiking in the Presidio, the Golden Gate Park or viewing the Golden Gate park which are nearby. This location does not have tables for eating, but they sell lunch items and bread that you can take To-Go. Parking is quite easy, and I have not had issues finding parking on the street.

Yelp
I can't believe it took me this long to write a review for this place! I was visiting SF back at the end of May and I heard tales of amazing local sourdough. Some quick research led me to the historic Boudin Bakery and I knew I had to give it a try. I was up early to make my way down the PCH for a day of hiking in Big Sur. I knew I needed something substantial to keep me full throughout the day of driving, sightseeing, and walking. Boudin Bakery was exactly what I needed! Although they have several locations, this one was the most conveniently located to my hotel. Street parking was a breeze in the morning and I managed to snag a spot right across from the entrance. When I was there, the store was careful to only let one customer inside at a time per Covid-19 precautions. I thought that was very smart considering it is a small space and it certainly made me feel more comfortable. I ordered a turkey sandwich with lettuce, cheese, and mayo on the famous sourdough roll and a medium coffee. After I placed my order, I couldn't help but look at all the sweet treats in the display too... I just HAD to order something else. The cashier was kind enough to ring me up again for an almond croissant - normally I would expect someone to get a little annoyed at my indecision but she remained friendly and patient. As she poured my coffee, she made sure to ask me if she was leaving enough room for cream and she carefully poured it to my liking. As someone who can be picky about my coffee, I loved the fact that she took her time to ensure I was getting my coffee the way I liked it! When I got in the car, I immediately unwrapped my sandwich to reveal this gorgeously huge sourdough sandwich. No wonder they're so famous for it! I ate half in the morning and another half at lunchtime on Pfeiffer Beach. It was enough sustenance to last me the day and it was delicious! I will certainly be back at Boudin Bakery the next time I'm in SF.

Ryan W.

Yelp
Pizza is 0/5 The pizza was absolutely terrible. You can see in the first photo the dough is flat and has zero aeration except for the crust. It was like I was crewing on leather. They should just discontinue making pizza and just continue making what they're known for. Or hire qualified people. Leaving a two stars because I know their regular bread and clam chowder bread bowls are good. But I was an idiot for trying the pizza at boudin.

Lori C.

Yelp
We ate at upstairs restaurant. Had a wait but drinks and bar staff were wonderful. Sour dough bread is their claim to fame but don't overlook the pizza! Was on top 5 best pizzas - ever! Calamari and crab chowder also not to be missed.

Eileen T.

Yelp
Update: A manager from Boudin contacted me to discuss things that went wrong in the customer service realm. He followed up with the team at this location on how they could have handled this better, and I appreciated his call.
google avatar

Laura D.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to get bread when I come out to visit. We just did a quick stop at this location to pick up a bunch of bread to bring back home with us. This is a small place. Not a place to sit down and eat. The guy who helped us was very nice. He sliced all the bread for us and packaged it nicely for us. Such delicious bread and very fresh. I actually got it a week before coming home and it's still very fresh. There is some parking on the street. It was pretty quiet in there. Most likely because it is a very small place. Very simple space. Not much to it. It was very clean and organized.

Yelp
Went instore to place an order and they said they turned off the stoves to prepare for closing before walking there I tried calling twice but of course no one answered and I tried to place an order online but they don't take special instructions or substitutions I'm so upset of wasting my time
google avatar

Julia H.

Yelp
This review is mainly for their food items aka pizza/sandwiches (not their bread, the bread is delicious!!) Overall I'm disappointed in their food selection , and wouldn't go back for it (but again I'd go back for their bread). I was really excited to try their pizza which they boasted about with their special sourdough crust, but was really underwhelmed. It was a super small pizza (the pictures were misleading!). I had nostalgia when I ate this pizza, but not in a good way as it reminded me of the cardboard taste of middle school cafeteria pizza. The cheese just tasted really cheap and the entire pizza was really stiff and hard. Wouldn't recommend the pizza at all! But... just to reiterate - I love the bread here!
google avatar

Evelyne M.

Yelp
Tried many times. First the price of their sandwich. Includes a choice of potato chips or salad. Should have more choices for a side that's included in price of sandwich. Bigger salad and more sauce topping. Chips are in a very small bag. At this rate and prices going always up you can purchase a regular meal somewhere else. Or sooner than later the company will close more Boudin Restaurants . Think twice corporate office.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
Maybe it was too close to closing time? We got there around 3pm on a Sunday to buy a chicken pesto sandwich. The filling was pretty good but the bread was just inedible. Hurt my jaw. Like cardboard!
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
Don't get their sandwiches especially the turkey avocado sandwich. It's not good at all. It's very plain and just taste like a mayonnaise sandwich
google avatar

Yelp
Quick service. Recommend ordering in advance during peak hours. I was lucky this morning. Will be returning soon.

Yelp
Hubs had the Boudin Fisherman's Wharf location in his radar specifically for the clam chowder Sourdough Bowl way before we came to SF. But after doing a quick drive through that mess, I wanted to get the f*uck outta there quick. So we ventured out to this Boudin in the Richmond district in hopes of hubs getting his clam chowder bowl. Well...turns out, this Boudin ran out! So his next best thing was a sourdough sandwich with the works- which he enjoyed a lot. My daughter and I had a Lettuce/Tomato/Avocado/Onion sandwich each. Odd but I'll take it- because the veggies were fresh. And while the bread was also fresh, they tried to pull off a sandwich and wasn't a fan of the dough's thickness. Crust was nice, but the inside is too thick and only ate 1/2 while the kid ate all hers. Good try though. Moral of the story? Call in advance for Clam Chowder Bowl availability.

Yelp
Only one person allowed in this location at once still (June 2022) I appreciate the cleanliness but one person at a time goes too far when it also requires a disabled person to bag their own bread separately because "the front and the back don't work together". Disabled and standing outside with three bags they refuse to combine together so that I can carry my order.

Ooze S.

Yelp
After reading a great deal of the reviews here, I've come to the conclusion that people are looking for something Boudin isn't known for. They are known for the best Sourdough in the city--THAT'S IT. It's not a sandwich shop, it's not a pizzaria, it's not a Bagelry and it's not a chowder-house. They do not even specialize in customer service. While they do sell all of those items, It's a bakery that specializes in BREAD. That is the focus! That being said, go there for that--Fantastic, Old-School San Francisco style sourdough. I grew up on the west coast and have had Seattle style sourdough, I lived in Alaska and had Alaskan sourdough, but my favorite has always been SF-Style sourdough, and this bakery does it perfectly. The wonderful, tart fragrance, the perfect crust and the slightly sweet, moist interior is why one goes to Boudin. So, get in line, place your order and get the hell out of the way for the next person. They want great bread as much as you do. On a side note, get an extra loaf and have them slice it for you (free!), save it for the next day and make French Toast out of it, serve with salted butter and real Maple syrup. You will NOT regret getting that extra loaf! Quite literally the best French Toast I've ever had, hands down.

Yelp
I am so loving this Boudin Bakery location. It is a wonderful establishment here in the Richmond District. Okay, this location may be on the small side. The menu items were also very limited. Most customers here order their food to go. There is still some seating right outside, so that is good especially if you want to enjoy your food. Suddenly had a craving for turkey sandwich. I came in and ordered the turkey havarti on sourdough baguette with a can of coke. The sandwich was so delicious, I finished it all in one sitting. As I was eating my sandwich, I noticed the sourdough baguette had kind of a hard texture to it. But this hard texture does give the bread that crunchy taste. I enjoyed every bite of this sandwich. Their sourdough bread is so good that I am tempted to get a loaf of it. The food here is always delicious, staff members are friendly and service is excellent. If you or anyone is in the mood to enjoy really delicious food, Boudin is here for you. Overall, positive experience here. Therefore, I am coming back again.
