Boulcott Street Bistro

I will start the review by saying a huge thank you to the staff for being extremely professional and well groomed! We really felt spoiled! The atmosphere is lovely and calm/romantic. It was perfect for our birthday dinner. Our entres were squid and duck parfait. I loved the detail of the sweetness of the hazelnut "cracker", which was almost like a thin biscotti that paired really well with parfait. We shared the eye fillet and the venison for the main. Eye fillet was cooked perfectly and was melting in the mouth. The venison was accompanied with cherries. It was the first time I tried this combination and we both thought that it was perfect! For dessert unfortunately the restaurant has sold out of the chocolate option, so we chose the creme brulee and the apricot tart. The creme brulee was very good according to my partner and we shared the tart. The apricots, I think, were cooked without sugar so were quite sour with almost a hint of salt. That worked really well with the light sweetness of the pasty and a strong sweetness coming from the ice cream . All together the balance of flavour was fantastic.

What a gem! From the moment Ivy greeted is we felt like valued patrons. The ambience is simultaneously upscale and cozy, and the food is a combination of classic flavours with inventive touches. We went for the $25 300g t-bone steak lunch special - cooked perfectly to order. I’d highly recommend the smoked bone marrow butter as topping. Twice cooked fries were a perfect accompaniment. Unlike North American restaurants where bread is served first to fill you up, here the house-made crusty sourdough is served for wiping up all the succulent meat juices (preventing diners from licking their plates). The wine list is beautifully curated, but a bonus is the equally carefully curated craft beer list. Desserts are generous and decadent, with the apricot flan served warm!! Truly, perfection.

Excellent food here at Boulcott Street Bistro! I’ve come twice now for the lunchtime special T-bone steak, for $25 you get a delicious steak & fantastic homemade bread! I also liked being able to add the eggs and definitely made me think about oysters and affogato. I will absolutely be back and can’t recommend this place enough for a nice meal out! I tipped a percentage too just because it was so good!

Everything was superb! We did find however, Barneby was not really the best waiter. I mean he knew his stuff and seemed very efficient but was not that friendly and behaved rudely in some actions unintentionally I suspect, eg reaching in front of us abruptly to pick up a empty glass, firstly, without asking if we had finished, even if to warn us he was picking up a glass. Instead this arm came flying dangerously close to us, without warning, scaring the bejesus out of us! You couldn't joke with him either! We almost felt he thought he was better than us? So overall socially inept. Perhaps he is on the spectrum? Having said that, every other person working there was outstanding and super friendly. The food was up there with the best food ive ever eaten. Dear friends of mine(who have now passed) Peter and Joan Dean, told me about this guy Rex Morgan, who they were very close too, was the chef here and advised me to try it. It took many years for us to get there, but have no regrets and I will be back for sure. Thank you for this beautiful little place in the big smoke xx

Very classic atmosphere. Also the service. The $25 T-bone steak was a GREAT deal. Especially with the onion soup. The waitress was so nice. Separated the soup into two so we both can tried it. We got the roasted broccolini too! Love the decorations. The only thing is a bit noisy. Otherwise everything was perfect!

Beautiful villa restaurant tucked in between two high rise buildings. Came for WoW and absolutely loved the service, the staff were interesting in talking to us and very friendly. The food was exceptional - one of us had the set menu for WoW and two ordered off the menu (love that option).

A polished, well-run establishment that largely meets expectations, but doesn’t quite justify its price point. Service was competent and the experience smooth, yet I hoped for an extra spark—tableside touches or a distinctive signature element—to make it feel special. The food was solid overall. The octopus would have benefited from a more assertive sear on the exterior, while both the lamb and venison could have delivered bolder, more pronounced flavors. Good, not great—reliable for a pleasant night out, but lacking the memorable highlights you’d expect at this cost.

A charming little restaurant in Wellington that’s well-known and well-loved. While the menu is on the pricier side, it’s absolutely worth it for the exceptional service, impeccable food, and the overall experience. The staff are warm, friendly, and attentive, making every visit feel special. We’ve celebrated birthdays here and have never been disappointed- the food and service are consistently top-notch. There’s even a kids’ menu, which is great for families. On our most recent visit, we ordered two steaks, one lamb dish, and a kids’ fish and chips. Fresh bread and butter were served at the beginning, which was a lovely touch. For dessert, we enjoyed the tiramisu and the chocolate tart- both beautifully presented and delicious. The interior decor of the restaurant is elegant and full of charm, with a cosy, intimate atmosphere. The building architecture stands as a historical reminder of a bygone era of the colonial times with its low ceilings, wood finishes and small rooms. I especially love the cute little staircase leading to the second floor and the beautiful paintings that adorn the restaurant walls of contemporary artwork- are a tasteful classy touch that adds a modern twist to the space. Highly recommend this spot for a special occasion or a memorable night out.
