All around excellent. I had a decaf piccolo, which was like a small latte, but I didn't miss a bigger size due to flavor and craft. My daughter had a steamed milk with a sprinkle of cocoa, which was just the right touch. The pumpkin bread was decent (but I'm a tough sell as I don't care for loaf breads). The best part was the friendliness of the baristas. (Perhaps they were the owners?) I've never come across any coffee shop workers this friendly, relaxed, ready to explain the menu, or glad that you've stopped by, and they were kind to my daughter also. Even if the coffee was mediocre, I'd be inclined to come back for customer service and friendliness alone. Lucky for me, the coffee is excellent.
Update: Returned to Bould Brothers a week later. Very good again; I had filter coffee, and husband had a cappuccino. I love that the baristas bring the coffee to wherever you're sitting. The woman next to us was just getting up to go downstairs and order a second drink; the barista delivering our drinks offered to take her order and bring it up to her. The food selection was much wider this early in the day; the chocolate and powdered sugar cookies looked oh-so-yummy, but I refrained. My two suggestions are to get rid of the bar on the first floor; it would open up more space. The second is to consider wifi. I would have loved to have stayed to work and buy a second coffee and perhaps sample the food, but I had to find somewhere else to do my work. I applaud the effort to provide a tech-free space, but it's worth considering that BB may lose customers like me to wifi-equipped coffee shops.
