This is the first gym I finally got to hit up after roughing it out during Covid lockdown outside in the heat with a metal pipe, sandbags, an EZ curl bar, and a few rigged-up pieces. Given that I've been training for over 15+ years, I'm not even going to lie, I needed to be absolutely sure that whatever gym I joined fit exactly what I needed because the previous situation was brutal and exhausting.
When I found Boulevard Fitness, I really liked its location, but in all honesty, I almost decided not to check it out since most gyms with the word "fitness" seem to be places where you can't deadlift or provide you with shaped plates to make it difficult to deadlift. I was pleasantly surprised upon walking in though.
I train using a hybrid method I've created that combines powerlifting, strongman, and mobility/gymnast training. This means that it's challenging to find a gym that meets my needs.
When I decided to just walk in and check the place out, I already knew what I needed, and if the gym didn't have it, I was prepared to look for another gym, regardless of the quality of equipment inside.
- A platform that allows for deadlifting or weightlifting exercises. Check.
- Round plates and even bumper plates. Check.
- Barbells made for holding weight. Check. In fact, recently, I'm pretty sure I saw a Texas Power Bar or Ohio Power Bar that was just purchased. Double check.
- Sturdy squat rack in case you need to bail because you've done messed up lol. Check.
- Some sort of path where I can do some strongman carries with plates or walking lunges. Check.
- A dedicated space for mobility training and stretching, which even includes its own dumbbell rack. Check.
For me, these were the absolute must-haves. They had it all, which I was surprised about given that buildings in this neighborhood aren't too big. However, here at Boulevard Fitness, they know what is important.
I don't use machines all too often, but I do appreciate that they did not upgrade to these new machines that are becoming popular these days that lessen range of motion, move as you move, or don't allow a person who knows what they're doing to use it creatively.
Although most people don't seem to use the outdoor area, I personally love it.
I have been working out at this gym for a year now. Needless to say, I love this place, and this is what I'll say after working out for this much time.
Shawn, the owner, is such a good dude. He is always sharing stories, knowledge, and experience. He cares about his gym, and it shows as I've seen every piece of equipment that needed repair get repaired in a timely manner. The people at this gym are friendly as well and I appreciate that there's a certain vibe at this gym where its like everyone is just cool and trying to do their best to improve themselves.
The only improvements I could suggest are the following:
- A few more 10-pound plates. The situation is not terrible, but sometimes when busy, it can be hard to find.
- This is more just me, but I really love weighted dips. They do have bars outside, but they're too wide for me. I use the hanging leg raise (from elbows) device they have inside, but it requires a stool since I'm too damn short lol. I'd say it'd be nice to have an adjustable height dip bar, but I also know that most people prefer bench pressing rather than weighted dips, so it's understandable they use the space for benches.
- Although I know mats get torn up pretty quickly, it'd be nice to have them replaced when they are torn.
I'll be fair here though, I've never brought this up to Shawn, and the situation with the 10-pound plates or mats has never been so bad that I felt I needed to bring it up immediately.
Overall, this gym surpassed what I expected and I had no problem paying for another year of membership. This gym has basically become my second home!
