On the Grid : Bourbon n' Toulouse

"It’s Mardi Gras all year long here. Finger-lickin’ cajun and creole signature dishes served with New Orleanian flair but no promenade. No wait, no formal plates, no table service. Order a half-and-half or quarter-order at the counter, grab a craft beer, and savor the essence of the French Quarter all while nestled cozily in Chevy Chase." - Bullhorn

Authentic creole food makes you feel like you are back in New Orleans. Service is very casual, you order at the counter, but the staff are super friendly, provide samples to help you decide that to order, and the food is ready before you are even done paying for your order! I even got a sweet tea on the house because it was my first time here. I wanted to try all their specialties so I had a half and half. Overall very satisfying meal, at a very good price. The parking here is a bit hard to find, you have to get lucky with street parking but other than that there is no complaints at all.

Google
Great service, the food came out quickly and everyone was super friendly. The atmosphere is cozy and upbeat, and the food was delicious! I was thrilled to find a place that serves Crawfish Etoufeé which I haven't had since I was in Baton Rouge last. The potato salad was also fantastic, though I will mention that it did have a smidge of heat to it, as did pretty much everything we tried. That said, even my mom who "doesn't do spicy" was very happy with her meal

A hidden gem! On our most recent roadtrip, we wanted to find a small business restaurant to support. Being in Lexington, the “bourbon” part of the title interested me. When trying to to find this restaurant, the GPS took us directly to it, but there was a restaurant about two doors down that we thought was actually this restaurant. Come to find out, there is a small window and door and that is where this gem lies. Then we realized that it did not actually have anything to do with the drink bourbon, but more on the lines of Bourbon Street when it came to Mardi Gras. This did not deter us, though, as we were in love when we walked inside. Very colorful atmosphere, Mardi Gras beads hanging all over the place, Local and Louisiana type art decorating the walls and tables. Upon entering, the worker who was extremely friendly, explained everything about the dishes and how they came. We were very impressed by him! 😀 We ordered two dishes that were half-and-half. One had Chicken Etouffee and Gumbo. The other was Red Beans/Sausage and Chicken Creole. Once I took a bite, I was instantly taken back to my childhood when I lived in Biloxi, Mississippi. Something about the taste just took me all the way back. I’m not even sure which item it was that I tasted or mixture of everything that it brought back. I cannot forget the butter bread. That was probably one of the most amazing breads I have ever tasted and went very well with these meals. 🍞 They had numerous sauces to accompany your meals. The food definitely had a kick in a few areas, but it was absolutely amazing! 🔥 I would come here again and again and suggest others give it a try if you haven’t and are in the area! A very laid back setting. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available.

Google
As someone that was born and raised in Louisiana, this is a place that brings Louisiana soul food to Kentucky in the Bluegrass State! The flavor, the taste the zest is all there you will not be disappointed the Service, the smile the atmosphere the only thing they’re missing is some Louisiana zydeco music, however I understand can’t have everything

Google
We are a fan of cajun food and this restaurant hit the spot! Because we were from out of town, they let us sample some of their best dishes! It helped us in ordering. The guy at the cash register was so friendly and kind to us! Prices were so reasonable. Artisic place too!

Google
Year after year the food is the best. High quality and the flavors are to die for. Don’t get me started about the sauce choices and the staff is always super friendly. Until next year…..

Google
Traveling in the area for business and our crew chose BnT for dinner and it did not disappoint. Atmosphere is simple but unique, great music choices in the background (not overpowering), we were treated like family or lifelong friends. Loved the complimentary “dinner flight” that was offered so we could sample 4-different menu items. The main courses, side items and sauces were homemade recipes with excellent flavors & spices to choose from. Our table had the jambalaya, chili, white chicken chili and the pulled pork with sides of potato salad. Nice beverage choices (hard ciders especially). AMAZING place! I will return when back in the area!!!

Google
One of the absolute best hole-in-the-wall restaurants I've ever been to. It's a tiny spot nestled in among the downtown shops, so you kind of have to look for it, but when you find it... Excellent, excellent, excellent Cajun food. And the service was top notch. The young guy running the counter, who seemed like the owner or maybe the owner's son, was incredibly helpful and even got us some samples as it was our first time there. They've got a variety of foods and drinks, a great atmosphere, and a quality staff. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Yelp
I finally tried this Lexington staple and absolutely loved it. I got the chicken etouffe, and was obsessed. Creamy texture, plenty of rice, and lots of spice/hot sauce options. It tasted very similar to drunk chicken at Yats in Indianapolis, and I believe the restaurants are related in some way, but I'm not positive about that. There's a comfy, cozy vibe inside and the service was quick and friendly. Parking nearby wasn't too difficult on a Friday for lunch.

Yelp
First visit and it was outstanding. Service was great and restaurant has an enchanting vibe. Staff was helpful and provided samples with suggestions. I got Chicken Etouffée and White Chili w/ Chicken. My wife got Cajun Red Chili and Chicken Etouffée. Bread and West 6th beer were wonderful complements. Both meals were delicious. Excited to return.

Yelp
Super friendly, super casual, best of all super good food! I ordered gumbo and shrimp ettoufee 50/50
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
The turkey etouffee is a Holiday special, but so worth the wait. The sandwiches and hotdogs are also amazing. They have a wide variety of drinks and special sauces as well. Highly recommend

Yelp
Establishment is a bit dated. Food is good. The Étouffée and Gumbo are solid choices. Not much of a sit down place for ambiance. More college fair patrons. I didn't select a check on Ambiance fyi.

Yelp
The environment stresses me out a little bit as it's very narrow, crowded, and dark, but their food is awesome! Definitely a place i enjoy for take-out rather than dining in. I don't think I've had anything I didn't like, and the huge selection of hot sauces is a fun addition to the already excellent food. Service is also consistently quick (how friendly the employees are can be hit or miss, but that doesn't bother me). It's also a unique option when we have visitors who need gluten-free meals.

Yelp
Lots of flavor , great pricing ( hard to find nowadays ) when everything is a $15 and up plate. Everything was good except the crawfish tasted fishy. Would prob just get chicken instead next time . Service was great , everyone was friendly . On the salty side, but if you put enough rice with it should be ok. I would suggest get take out and make your own rice at home , bc I'm not used to this type of rice . The texture is off for me, I prefer jasmine or Japanese short grain. This rice taste more like orzo .

Yelp
Brother 2 thumbs up I am a Cajun and this has got to be some of the best Cajun food I've had outside of Louisiana. Great service and the ambiance is very familiar to back home.
google avatar

Yelp
Unique place. Portions were huge for the price. Lots of flavor. Fun. Loved the decor. I'll go back.

Yelp
Food was absolutely amazing, super flavorful, not super pricey and HUGE portions. The vibe is super chill and the staff was just 5 stars alone. Really friendly and quick to service you without making you feel rushed. Highly highly recommend

Fat Man Reviews K.

Yelp
The Fat Man wanted some good Cajun cuisine. So, the wife and I headed up to Bourbon n' Toulouse to grab some treats from the bayou. B&T serves Cajun Creole specialties (including many gluten-free options) in simple, colorful surroundings. I got a full order 1/2 and 1/2. One dish I tried was the Chicken Étouffée. This is made with a spicy roux-based brown gravy, shredded chicken, and rice. The roux was dark and rich, and the chicken was very tender. This dish had a great heat level, although heavy on the pepper. The rice was perfectly cooked and fluffy. This is their #1 selling dish. The other half of my dinner was Cajun Red Chili. This is made with a spicy tomato base chili, beef, pork and is served over rice. This dish had many big chunks of meat with a sweet flavor on the front and a good heat level. The tomatoes offer good texture and acid to this award-winning dish. Neither dish was overwhelmingly hot, and they both were full of flavor. My wife tried a 1/2 order of White Chili w/ Chicken. This is made with mild white chili, great northern beans, chicken, and red bell peppers with herbs and spices. This chili was thick and cooked well. The beans offered some texture and a chew. The seasoning on the chicken was flavorful and tender. It was mild with a low heat level. This dish is also award-winning. They serve sliced baguette bread on the side with every meal. It was crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside, with a nice amount of garlic butter. They also have a large number of hot sauces to go along with their food. I liked the Cajun Power Garlic. It offered some good heat with a sweet pop and a great garlic punch. B&T serves half, full, and half-and-half orders of their dishes. Along with Cajun and Creole classics, they also serve sandwiches and vegetarian and vegan dishes. The staff is amiable, and the food comes quickly. This is a small place, so there may be a wait. The Fat Man says that Bourbon n' Toulouse is Fat Man Approved with 2 chins.

Yelp
EVERYTHING was authentic! Like being back in NOLA during my college days! Etouffee stellar! Red bean & rice perfect!! Cajun chili dog hit the stop for this Texas Gal!!SERVICE QUICK and fun! Ambiance COLORFUL with plethora of Mardi Gras beads adornment and every table and chair painted in a palette of colors to enhance the joy of spicy Cajun flavors on your tongue! AND THE MUSIC a perfect blend welcoming us with Proud Mary rolling on the river to Peter Frampton and the Stones to Credence Clearwater Rival!! Combined to transfer us back to New Orleans on the Delta! It's a MUST VISIT in Lexington for a pure authenticity taste of Cajun delight!!

David S.

Yelp
I love Bourbon and toulouse. I have never gotten a bad meal or had a bad experience there. The owners are really connected to the community and are always helping with charity work. This is exactly the kind of business we need to be supporting. Well, that's my 2 cents. David Sparks

Yelp
Love this place. A staple back when I was in college and still just as good and super affordable!
google avatar

Yelp
Classic Lexington spot. Great if you're visiting Lex, want to get lunch, or in the area. Plates are hearty, cheap, atmosphere is great and relaxed. Owner/staff are super friendly. This place just slaps. They also recently started displaying art after the schools cut art-funding, so theyre ethical too. Havent tried the new location, but i've heard similar things. Will always come back!
google avatar

Kayla H.

Yelp
Food smells and tastes amazing, service is fast and quick to serve, its order at the counter but has lots of seating. The vibe is fun and chill. Very Louisiana style decor and seasoning. Serving sizes are large and we got two orders of half and half plenty for two people.
google avatar

Emile L.

Yelp
Love coming here food is AMAZING! Definitely a cool place makes me wanna go back to New Orleans.
google avatar

Emory B.

Yelp
Best Cajun food EVER!! Cajun food is my favorite and I have yet to have Cajun food anywhere in my life that rivals NOLA Cajun food and BNT does. The red beans and rice is INCREDIBLE. Everything is. My husband loves their etouffees. everytime I am in lex I have to grab BNT. Down and dirty spot (everything comes in styrofoam containers), a few spots to eat there and lots of to go business.
google avatar

Nate F.

Yelp
This place is the bomb.com.. I'm from Texas, and make it a point to go out of my way to stop here every time I'm near Lexington! Best Shrimp/Crawfish Étouffée and fresh bread ever!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Kristina M.

Yelp
On a roadtrip and stopped by to pickup some takeout. Ordered a 1/2 and 1/2 of Chicken Étouffée & Jambalaya . I am not an expert on cajun cooking, but this was really tasty.

Jeff S.

Yelp
Food: D@mn well delicious! I suggest doing the 1/2 and 1/2 with the chicken étouffée and red beans and sausage. Huge servings,,, and you will want it because you just cant get enough! Service: after finding out we had not been here before, the guy at the counter ran us through the entire menu and answered all questions before they were even asked. That took any guesswork out of the experience. Overall fabulous place, come and enjoy
google avatar

Ladan N.

Yelp
Very very friendly staff and they allowed me to sample the food before I decided what I wanted to get. I got a take out but the space seemed very family friendly and packed with happy people chatting as they enjoyed their meal. Very affordable too and I loved the bread more than anything!
google avatar

Beccy K.

Yelp
Large portion sizes served on rice and with garlic bread. Friendly staff willing to offer samples of any dishes. Fun and festive atmosphere. Did not charge for soda - free refills available. Order at counter and seat yourself. The gumbo and red beans with sausage were fabulous! We need to return to try others!
google avatar

Jermaine S.

Yelp
The flavor and the speed of service of this place is amazing. The prices are great and the portion size is perfect and if you get the full plate, you will probably have leftovers. The dine in area isn't the biggest but it's tidy and the restaurant has a mom and pops feel to it.
google avatar

Emma W.

Yelp
Worth the hype for sure! The food is great, simple but flavorful and very reasonably priced. Huge portions, too. The service is excellent and everyone is really friendly. I appreciate that they offer samples, I've never seen another restaurant do that and it's nice being able to try something before you order it. The restaurant itself has a really cool vibe, lots of interesting decorations and a good amount of seating. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Kay C.

Yelp
Louisiana native and eating here felt like home. Filled with flavor and the staff is so nice. I would definitely recommend
google avatar

Elaine D.

Yelp
Bourbon & Toulouse is serving up their Mardi Gras Specials. You still have today and tomorrow, Fat Tuesday, to grab one of them. I had to have the Swamp Dog, Alligator Sausage with Crawfish Etouffee. Tasty, with a bit of heat. There could haven been more heat and more Etouffee, but I enjoyed it. Order online for pickup so you don't have to wait on line.
google avatar

Joy V.

Yelp
B&T have the best food in Lexington. Hands down! I've eaten here for a lot of years. Oh I love my steakhouses and Chinese but my most fav is here at B&T!! No fancy decor but the food and service is impeccable, I'd actually fight whoever says a bad word about this place or the sincere staff! OOOOhhhhaweeee!!
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
So bomb.com. I'm glad I don't live in LEX because I'd gain a million pounds eating here every day. So good. Gumbo off the chain. All hot sauces I tried were awesome. People super nice.
google avatar

Jon W.

Yelp
I need to come back. I enjoyed the crawfish etoufee. I really need to return to try their Gumbo or Jambalaya. Great vibe here--super chill.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Food is amazing! Owner is super kind. Very generously Covered my and my partner's meal after some online harassment. Staff honored the comp. Super relaxed and chill!

Yelp
Oh hey Bourbon n' Toulouse! You've increased your vegan options since the last time I've been here and I am impressed! I'm updating my review and increasing my opinion to 5-stars :) The delicious Vegan Black Beans are still a staple here. They've also added Tofu Creole. Sadly it was sold out on the day we were here but perhaps that's a sign that it's a popular dish. The Vegan BBQ Jackfruit sandwich with Vegan Coleslaw is AMAZING! Saucy, smoky, spicy, the coleslaw was a nice crunchy-cool contrast which on it's own is also spicy. The portion size was perfectly filling. So good! https://bit.ly/3haoqW0 They had a sign posted apologizing for the price increases but compared to where I'm from, I thought the prices were reasonable. A half plate of the Vegan Black Beans + the sandwich is $12.50 and it was more food than I could finish. Staff is friendly, service is good, and legit hot sauce options :)

Jeff G.

Yelp
some of the best food comes from hole in the wall places. Our kids love this place, now we know why. The guys running the place were over the top. they even gave us a sampler tray to help decide what we wanted.
google avatar

Eileen B.

Yelp
This place you could miss if you are not careful. This is a gem in Lexington that transports you to New Orleans. First the menu is inexpensive and fits right in to a college town. But the most important the food is delicious. My daughter and I split the vegetarian Thai peanut sauce with baby corns and rice. It was a half order and was huge for 6 dollars. My husband got the red beans and sausage and he was a happy man They had all kinds of hot sauces to choose from. What a treat and I wish I lived closer.
google avatar

Sandy W.

Yelp
Stopped for lunch on our way to the distillery. Decor reminded me of a campus eatery inside. Our meals were authentic gumbo seasoning and very tasty. Service was quick and employees friendly.
google avatar

Robert F.

Yelp
Great unique food at very reasonable prices, servings are generous too! One of the best chili dogs in Lexington too!
google avatar

Olivia W.

Yelp
A Lexington staple and one of my all time favorite restaurants! B&T has a laid back atmosphere with friendly staff and the food is consistently delicious. I always get a half plate of chicken étouffée + half plate of black beans and corn. The bread is amazing so I recommend getting extra!
google avatar

Deserae S.

Yelp
This is such a cute local place. It is a casual, comfortable, fun Creole restaurant. From outside it is very unassuming but don't let that sway you from walking in! We were greeted with a smile and friendly welcome. I have the corn and bean along with jambalaya. Both were very different flavors but amazing taste. I Loved that I could order a quarter of each to taste more. . My husband had the red beans and rice and was happy with his meal as well. I sampled his potato salad and even loved it. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Terrica L.

Yelp
Friendly staff. And the location is cozy. The food was a little too salty. Decent amount of parking. The food is not over priced.
google avatar

Palpable P.

Yelp
I had the Shrimp Etouffee and Gumbo, and everything was absolutely devine! I'm from the Deep South and am picky about Cajun food, but this place is perfection. Great prices and incredibly nice staff aren't the only reasons I love this place. The flavor, textures, and consistency of all the food is remarkable. Plus, the interior has the relaxed and fun vibe of southern Louisiana. Bravo! You all are the best!
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
As someone from New Orleans this food really is comparable! The spice is perfect and everything we got was so good and authentic! We got shrimp etouffee, southwest etoufee w crawfish and the chicken sausage jambalaya! All very very good. the french bread was also fantastic! I would've taken pictures but it was too good to stop eating!
google avatar

Xandi J.

Yelp
This place was awesome! My family and I were looking for something we haven't eaten before and it hit the spot. The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was warm and lively. We will definitely be back for more :)
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
This is good Cajun food. Always consistent and good personal service! Big menu for rice based dishes.
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Best gumbo I've had in years! Decor made me smile and wax nostalgic for NOLA. Staff was amazing. So friendly. Wonderful overall experience.

Fred D.

Yelp
It was very inexpensive. I expected a large more festive place. It's kind of homey and the plates were huge. The food was ok. Not sure I would run back but we're glad we checked it out on our first night in Lexington.

Mercy C.

Yelp
Rich, spicy, deep flavors. Had the gumbo-drool-and the jambalaya-mmmm. Delicious! Nice people too.

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Favorite Cajun restaurant, they have a lot of different sauces to choose from. I like to get the half and half so I can try 2 different dishes at once. Don't forget the extra bread!
google avatar

Bethany C.

Yelp
Excellent service and great value. 1/2 and 1/2 deal is an excellent way to try many things. Our group had gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp etouffee, and Cajun chili dog. All delicious. Ambiance is very chill, bathrooms very clean.

Tracy J.

Yelp
Delicious, inexpensive, super friendly and helpful staff. Food has just the right kick and a ton of sauce selections. Also, the portions are big! All the stars plus.
