Melbourne Travel Guide - Things To Do & Vacation Ideas

"A bustling pedestrian shopping hub running between Elizabeth and Swanston Streets where trams, buskers and shoppers intersect—home to department stores David Jones and Myer, popular chains and entrances to several shopping arcades, with the GPO building on the corner now operating as a luxe shopping mall." - Keira Alexander Keira Alexander Keira Alexander is an Australian journalist based between Melbourne and New York City. Went to visit part of our walking tour, architecture is very nice .. lots of high end shops and restaurants.. bring your wallet, it’s not inexpensive… treat it as an adventure.. apparently there are tunnels underneath but you can’t visit .. they are closed..

Well!!! Well!!!! So much to see, so little time. Truely, cosmopolitan city from highly desirables expensive shopping experiences to discovering mysterious alley ways. Most times what you find by taking the alleys invokes surprise and pleasure. A truely must do. 😉🫡

Bourke Street Mall is the heart of Melbourne and my personal favorite spot in the city. The vibes here are unmatched, with stunning city views and constant energy. Easily accessible by trams, it’s well-connected, though parking can be tricky. There’s always something happening—live musicians, street performers, and festive events keep the place lively. During Christmas, the Myer windows add a magical charm, making it even more special. Watching the sunset through the streets is an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re shopping, strolling, or just soaking in the atmosphere, this is the best spot in Melbourne!

Bourke Street Mall – A Vibrant Night in Melbourne I recently had an unforgettable night exploring Bourke Street Mall, and if you’re planning to visit Melbourne, this spot is a must. My friend and I kicked off our adventure in Chinatown, then made our way to Bourke Street Mall around 9:13 PM on a Saturday. The atmosphere was buzzing – the trams were packed, and the streets were filled with people. It felt like we were at the heart of the city. The best way to experience Bourke Street Mall is on foot. The wide pedestrian walkways make it easy to explore and take in the sights. The energy here is unmatched – from the street performers to the late-night dancers, there’s always something happening. We also grabbed a bite at Hungry Jack’s along the way, enjoying the city’s 24-hour vibe. We visited several clubs that night, including Whitehart Club and Carlton Club, hopping from one to the next. It was a fun way to experience Melbourne’s nightlife. Despite the crowd, the city felt safe and smooth, with people just enjoying their weekend. Yes, we saw a few fights and some people smoking in corners, but it didn’t distract from the overall experience. One thing that really stood out was how Melbourne never sleeps. People were out cycling, walking, and just enjoying the night – the energy was incredible. If you’re visiting, definitely take the time to walk around Bourke Street Mall and check out the nearby Chinatown. You’ll get a real feel for the city’s pulse, and it’s an experience you won’t forget.

Yelp
Didn't really shop here but I hung out and listened to the live music outside of the huge H&M store. It was really chill there. I'd go back for sure.

Yelp
No different to Pitt Street Mall in the city, the Bourke Street Mall is Melbourne's equivalent, and with its own unique Zara outlet as well. So often the tram tracks are crossed to get to the other side to the point where waiting to cross the road at the lights to enjoy some more high quality shopping is a chore within itself. The iconic public purse at the tram station outside Melbourne GPO is a hit within itself (no pun intended) as musicians come to entertain us with their musical equipment stacked along this magnetic piece of art. Don't cross the tram tracks just yet as you have Melbourne GPO to explore. A word of warning: just ensure that you have gone to the toilet beforehand as something so simple as going to the loo turns out to be an obstacle here. Great cafes await you as well as quality boutiques to browse through. I love Georg Jensen here; in fact all the jewellers here provide great customer service. Keep walking and you will find Myers and DJ's in tandem with more street performers, and not to mention activists wanting support to help free the refugees or to take a stand of capitalism etc. Something would be so wrong with you if you are bored here. Cross the tram tracks (safer to actually cross the road) and you will find the food halls and more treats. Sadly that bistro on the Elizabeth Street side is now closed. And you might be lucky to spot one more street performer before moving on.

Yelp
In the late 90's early 00's, the Bourke Mall of Melbourne was a Mecca of dodge. Sure every christmas there was the myer windows, but overall it wasn't a great place. Lucky for us Melbournians the recent (last 5 years) new tram stops and the current Myer and David Jones remodeling and the addition of Zara have lifted to the Mall to the cosmopolitan space I always new it could be.

Yelp
Beautiful shopping district, pedestrian-only. Designer department stores to boutiques to little shops abound, something for everyone. Royal and Block Arcades are both near the Mall. Stop by Union Lane, easy to miss but worth checking out for excellent street art.

Yelp
My main intention of going here was to seek at the iconic clock tower and huge impressive glass dome. Enjoyed wandering around the shopping mall and seeing what goodies was to be had. Had a nice breakfast in the Pancake Parlour

Yelp
This isn't a mall per se and I reckon overseas travels would be expecting something a little different. However, this little strip, which is located in the heart of the CBD, is full of shopping, entertainment, and most of all history. The architecture is a big drawcard here, and its neo-renaissance style attracts all types of photographers from far and wide. In fact you'll find the entrance to the famous Royal Arcade located here, which is of course known for it's timeless beauty. Besides the shopping attractions, the Bourke Street Mall is an entertainment hub which sees many buskers fighting for the crowds with all types of dancing, music and even juggling. It's important to note that half way down the street you'll find a Melbourne Visitor Booth that can hook you up with maps and information on events, transport and attractions.
