17 of the World's Most Beautifully Broken Places

"At the confluence of the Blyde River and the Treur River in the South African region of Mpumulanga, thousands of years of water erosion have created a unique and otherworldly geological feature. Here at the mouth of the Blyde River Canyon, the two rivers formed swirling eddies of water. Over time, this formed huge cylindrical potholes in the sandstone bedrock. The effect, seen from the crags above, is now a fascinating network of tunnels and tubes and interconnected whirling pools. The different soil levels in each hole give them each a unique color and makes for a striking and colorful landscape. The formations get their name from a prospector, John Bourke, who was one of the first to proclaim that the region had gold deposits and who staked a claim nearby. Despite the name of the potholes, he never found a single ounce of gold there — though luckier prospectors would later find rich amounts of gold in the area. Even if he walked away empty-handed, his name lives on in the stunning scenery.  The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve in which the potholes are located, has bridges and viewing platforms that allow visitors to see the interesting rock features from a variety of angles. There is also a small but interesting geological museum and short walking trails." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

If there's one place that you have to visit along the Panorama Route, make it this place. The proximity to the residential houses makes one hope that security/access control is good. The Three Rondevals, Blyde Canyon, waterfalls and Potholes all come together here and you come in contact with monkeys. It means, if you skip all the other spots along the Route, you will be served here. Facility is clean. The security lady was so helpful and friendly. Be sure to lock your car and ensure your windows are closed because of the monkeys. Ample parking and a great place to take pictures or see the sunset. Great place to bring children and the place has lots of wheelchair friendly paths. You can also hike here, like I said, this place keeps giving.

The experience is quite spectacular to see the water swirl and create the circles down below. They also have a special walk way for people in wheelchairs. NB: Just note if you want to use their toilets they charge you extra for toilet paper. Entrance R75 p.p if you are a South African citizen.

Breathtaking Visit to Bourke's Luck Potholes Visiting Bourke's Luck Potholes on the Panorama Route was an unforgettable experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves nature’s raw beauty. The view here is truly one of a kind, and the natural formations left me in awe. It’s a wonder that feels both surreal and humbling, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular stop on the Panorama Route. The potholes themselves, carved over millions of years by the swirling water of the Blyde and Treur Rivers, create a stunning display of smooth, round hollows set in striking rock formations. The sight of the water flowing through these natural sculptures is mesmerizing, and the landscape surrounding them adds to the sense of peace and awe. I suggest spending enough time to fully take in the area. There’s so much to appreciate beyond just the potholes themselves. The hiking trail around the site offers a closer, more intimate experience of the beauty. Walking along it, I felt more connected to the land and its geological history. The views from different angles reveal just how much natural artistry has shaped this area. If you're planning to visit, definitely take the time to walk the trail. It allows you to enjoy the surroundings at a slower pace and get the most out of this incredible natural wonder. In conclusion, Bourke’s Luck Potholes is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Panorama Route. Whether you’re a geology enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates stunning views, this place will leave a lasting impression.

Beautiful natural views & scenery, 5 stars, but as a tourist guide I'm disappointed. Bathrooms had no soap dispensers (plastic bottle only), no way to dry hands hands. The interpretive centre has some neat animals displayed but could be much better with a little more effort. The restaurant hasn't much to offer. The staff I think could be a bit more helpful. Maybe print some decent menus.

The place in itself is beautiful and has the potential. However, the poor maintenance and entrance fee scam can make you feel bitter for the price you pay. The place is not well maintained, the panels with text are burnt by the sun and are unreadable. Also, when arriving, at the first gate we were told that it was cash only, we refused insisting in paying by card. We were then told to go to the second gate a few meters further down the road. There the lady tried also to make us pay by cash. when she understood that we would only pay by card, she finally accepted and suddenly there were no more technical issues for paying by card...

Nature is fantastic artist! What beauty can compare? Such a pitty it is ruined by plastic water pipes and deteriorating infrastructure.
