Bowery Grand Hotel

I stayed at one of the most affordable hotels in NYC, and while it's not for everyone, I was prepared and had a decent experience. The shared bathrooms were a bit wet, but manageable, and with some extra comfort items like my own pillow and sheets, it felt like urban camping. Sure, some guests were loud at night, but for $80 a night when most places were $350+, it was worth the savings! Staff were very friendly.

This was NOT a hotel room. This was a broom closet with a bed. I checked out a 3 am and couldn't wait to get out. How WOTIF/Expedia can charge $150 for this hole in the wall and sleep at night is beyond me. And they had the gall to write me that I grabbed a bargain ! It's a good thing I was 5'11" . If I were any taller I woulkd have had to sleep with my knees to my chest. The room was only as wide as the mattress.

The Bowery Grand Hotel shouldn’t even be labeled as a “hotel.” I understand the old cliché saying, “you get what you pay for,” but this cheap place takes its one-star rating to a whole new level in terms of carelessness.||||From the moment you walk in, a strong unpleasant smell reeks the stairwell and basically sets the tone for the entire experience. Second, it’s nothing but a narrow set of stairs at the entrance – definitely nowhere near ADA-compliant – and weird etiquette signs such as “no pets,” “no bikes” and “no visitors” are plastered on several windows.||||The lobby is cluttered with trash and (at least during my visit) either drug addicts or homeless people were sleeping in the lobby, making the visit somewhat uncomfortable. At least the receptionist was polite and respectful when I checked in for my room.||||But the category that predominantly makes the Bowery Grand Hotel an absolute horror show is cleanliness – or lack thereof. If there was a separate category for cleanliness, it would easily earn zero stars out of 100 and I’m not exaggerating, either. There were dirty stains on the bed sheets, the walls inside my room were stained and I found a dead bug on my bed. I arrived at the hotel with no insect bites on my skin and after my two-night stay, I noticed seven small insect bites on various parts of my body, so bed bugs are a serious problem here. As far as the rooms themselves go, it is nothing more than a tiny square space with a bed and a chicken-wire fence up above – which is sadly comparable to a typical prison cell. The restrooms are shared communal spaces and they were disgusting. Mold and mildew can be seen on the walls, ceiling and sink. The floor inside the shower was so filthy that I waited until I got back home to take a shower. No windows or air conditioning exists. And finally to top it all off, the restroom consists of NO TOILET PAPER whatsoever!!! This forced me to release my bodily waste at either Moynihan Train Hall or at a nearby restaurant.||||Again, I understand that “you get what you pay for” at an average one-star hotel, but it is still absolutely unacceptable for any hotel to provide an unsanitary experience for any guest. Staying at the Bowery Grand Hotel is a serious health and humane hazard and I’m quite sure violates many basic health codes; I have no idea how this place even exists or is in operation. This place either needs to deep-cleaned to the extreme or be completely shut down for good.||||Long story short: Do not book this “hotel” ever …. even if it’s $10 per night and you’re homeless. If you want to sleep, save money and avoid getting bed bugs, use the 24/7 NYC Subway instead.

It was what I expected for $75 a night in Manhattan. Bring your own sheet, pillow, and thin blanket if you can…. And pack your headphones. . Its a $75 a night hotel in a fun side of Manhattan. You are lucky to have had a bathroom and closet for this price. ✌️

Although the location is great this is essentially a homeless shelter. There was literally a guy living in the lobby! The bathrooms were the most disturbing and disgusting thing I have ever seen. With a giant hole in the ceiling and in such a state that I don’t actually think they have seen a cloth and disinfectant since 1952! I’ve literally stayed in jungle lodges with better and cleaner facilities than this hotel. It might be cheap for. NYC if $90 is cheap !!! But you’d be better off spending more and getting a cleaner experience

I been there for a week and I gotta tell y’all if you’re not super young or super broke don’t even bother. The prices are good yea I know but it’s not even your get what you pay for you get less😭 the bathroom was super disgusting it felt like a rat is gonna come up any second. I’d rather use the washrooms in restaurants on 42 st cause that was unreasonable. Also the room itself is soo small idk if you can actually see it on the website but if you come with an actual suit it’s gonna be way too full. Also I was there in summer and it was soo hot too and smells kinda weird cause it’s a bunch of ppl over there and the room isn’t really closed there is no real roof for your room so you don’t just smell everybody you also hear everybody. I was unlucky cause there was one guy who talked to HIMSELF the entire night and the other one was gooning probably cause I heard him moan A LOT. But if you a real tough guy and all that don’t concern you hey go ahead the position is pretty nice I mean lower east manhattan you can’t complain with the train you can go everywhere from there

one of the disgusting Hotel I've ever been to, it's a disgrace to NYC, it looks very awful and scary, don't be surprised by the smell the weed smell in the stairs, the rooms are disgusting, and don't believe the photos one Booking. com, they are old where everything looks new and clean, the bed and sheet are disgusting, don't be surprised if you see a bug or a cockroache, showers are disgusting and no towel papers, and the walls of the rooms are shorter so you can people snoring, talking, farting, and even putting loud music, and if someone turn on their room light it will light your room, so don't bd surprised if you slept in a lit room,.. it really ruins the mood of the beautiful city, at the reception is a big mess, it's like beggars are living there, if I were a president of that city I'd close it down. go do some painting and cleaning!! and it's NOT worth that price!!! F Disgusting!!

There is nothing “grand” about this place nor is it a “hotel”. The place is filthy from the moment you open the front door, to the steps up to reception. The bathrooms are filthy, no toilet paper, no ceilings, damp and mould. Sound of things crawling from above. Very loud during the night from other rooms. Bed bugs, cockroaches etc. I couldn’t get out of here quick enough!!

If you stay there: bring sheets, eye mask, ear plugs, and go to the bathroom before you get there. It is dirty, loud, cramped and somewhere between slightly disturbing and actively scary. But it is cheap.

DO NOT GO THERE Ok, this is the worst hotel room I have ever seen in my life. Nothing, absolutely nothing is there. No windows, an ugly atmosphere, far from cleanliness, and more importantly, it's highly highly highly insecure. Anything can happen there, from murder to theft... I mean this is a living hell. I stayed there for 5 minute, didn't even ask for refund. Left the room immediately. People gave some scary vibe and as soon we saw the room and the overall environment, we just cheked out after 5 minutes.

The ugliest, worst hotel I've ever been in. I paid $81 for two and honestly it should have been $30 considering how gross it was. Stains in the room, no bathroom, ugly, super small..etc. Nothing really redeemable about it.

Anyone staying here needs to know there's a good reason this hotel is one of the cheapest. Bowery Grand Hotel isn't even a hotel. It's a hostel and it's a very bare bones one. Cheap is the main point here. They have a room with a bed and that's about it. Getting the cheapest hotel in the city is a good way to end up in the Bowery. I was in town to pick up some stuff and needed a quick place to stay and this was available. The area around it isn't anything special. It's in part of Chinatown. There's not that much more than light fixture and restaurant supply stores. Bowery flophouses were popular back when because they were cheap. It wasn't much more than a bed if even that. This hostel has beds but it does have a few toiletries they give you. Except toilet paper. The bathrooms are always out of it, seriously. How is this even legal, it probably isn't. So I guess you have to bring your own or you're literally shit out of luck. As for the rooms there's single occupancy or dorms. The dorms are about $30 a night. After hearing some pretty sketchy characters I'm glad I didn't choose it. The single rooms are about $35 to $50 a night. It varies wildly depending on where you book it. The rooms are the classic cage style. An open floor was divided up into small units, each only barely big enough for a single bed. The walls didn't reach the ceiling, so the rooms were topped off with chicken wire. If you're in need of a good night's sleep you won't get it here. You can literally hear every conversation on the whole floor, and these crazy people play music at all times. Bathrooms are filthy. There's a few toilets on each floor so you often have to wait, and you don't want to touch anything you don't have to so bring hand sanitizer and soap because you'll be using a lot. It only gets a couple stars for being cheap. Some extras like a small bar of soap and a packet of toothpaste are provided. Wish they would provide toilet paper like any civilized hotel but you should bring some own along with ear plugs so you can actually sleep.

Hear me out before you strip me off my Yelp Elite status! After reading the reviews, I already came to Bowery Grand Hotel expecting the worse and had a back up plan in case the conditions are just inhumane. But it's not as bad as I thought, and I would actually book here again! My room was located on the mixed gender floor (the same floor with the lobby), which is probably why my room was in a much better shape. My room was simple and tidy, and the ceiling actually had tiles. The downside is that the walls are thin, and I can hear every conversation next door. I ultimately chose this place because their location is very convenient. It is right in Chinatown, and I am few minutes away from Little Italy and from where I need to be for work. I felt safe walking back and forth at night since there were plenty of lights, and people are always out and about. Given the price (can't beat $35 a night), central location (right in NYC), and better-than-average cleanliness, I recommend the Bowery Grand Hotel for solo travelers who are on a tight budget. I would also suggest ear buds if you're a light sleeper!

This is not a hostel. This is a mens dorm and more attune to a prison cell. The "private rooms" are cubicles, and all the noise and light from others comes in clearly threw the open ceiling. Clear etiquette divide regarding after hour noise - ie ppl on their phones at 1am talking load as fuck. No common area or kitchen. 4 toilets and showers for 40 men - there is a line in the morning and they were dirty. Saw a bed bugs. And that AC? Nah windows open hot as hell, all sounds from the street rolling in. As someone who is an avid Hosteler. THIS IS NOT A HOSTEL - pay $10 more a night for an actual one. You WILL remember this for life as the worst place you've stayed.

Stayed here for 2 nights, Dec 4 - 6, 2021. Location was pretty good, near B / D Grand St subway station and the M103 bus, Spring St's 6 station and Bowery J / Z is close too. People at the front desk are super friendly, always greeting me when I came back. Each room is just a twin bed, a light switch with a power outlet, and a chair. towel, toothbrush, and soap were provided. The beds are tiny though, couldn't really sleep well on it, narrow and a bit too short for someone who's 5'10''. Bathroom and shower were alright, I didn't shower here but it looked fine. Room walls were really thin, could hear other people. I was worried a bit about ventilation with covid, didn't check covid vaccination cards upon check-in. All I did here was sleep so the small rooms was fine with me, but I wouldn't stay here if I planned on spending more time "at home". Wifi speed was fine.

This place is a total shit hole! Disgusting restrooms unclean grimey sinks, toilet full of shit stains, no toilet paper full of flys and bugs. The rooms are dirty the mattress is disgusting bed bugs. Smells of feet and other horrible stitches. Sketchy people. I cant believe people gave this place more than one star they must be associated with this hotel so they can bring in customers and rip them off because they have a no refund policy because the pictures they post are totally fake and not even slightly remotely the way the rooms look when you get there in person. If I could I would give this place a negative Stars.

There are no frills but it is clean and all the staff members were very friendly and helpful. The bathrooms - 3 on each floor- were all kept clean and tidy. The room is small but was just what we needed. I will stay again.

This is a bare bones budget place that isnt something most people should consider. However if your brave and a budget seeker, then it might be something that you should look into. After all on many days rooms go as low as $39 a night single. With all the taxes and fees that are added to NYC hotels, its $48.30 if you book at $39. Sure you can easily spend 6-8 times that for another hotel, but think about what you can do with all that money! I booked it on booking.com but its avail on many other web booking sites also. If you go on the subway, GRAND and BOWERY are both just a 2 min walk away. Neither of those are major subway stations but once your in the system you can transfer trains to just about anywhere. It did take me 4 trains and 1 bus though to get to LaGuardia, so allow LOTS of time if your going to an airport. Allow far more time than you think you will need. When you get here you wont see the hotel name on the door. Just a door and a 143 on the wall. Thats it! Go in, and start climbing the stairs! At the top to the right is the check in. The person at the desk will buzz the door open for you. They have men only floors, so thats where they put me. I can only rate my floor. I didnt personally see any women there for the 2 days I was there. I dont think most women would feel good there and neither would couples. I dont even know if they have rooms that would hold two. I will post pictures of the room. I knew what it would be like from other review sites and this one too. You open a door and there is a bit of space to walk in, a light switch , a towel and tiny thin bar of soap. and a toothbrush. There is one sheet and a blanket like thing. There was hair all over and it wasnt mine, so makes one wonder what else is around there. The floor under the bed is pretty dirty. I did NOT see any bedbugs. A tiny ledge or a table would sure be nice You have nowhere but the floor to set things on and its filthy. Your wallet watch, an alarm. your phone?? that will have to be way down on the floor or in bed with you. Im 5'11 and the bed is about that long. Anyone taller will feel cramped. There is a light in the room, and the door does lock. Yet there was a wide space in my door so if the light was on someone could see in a bit through the crack. Voyeurs would like that. This place has no ceilings on the rooms. This is VERY COMMON in New York budget hotels. They just put slats like a garden trellis or wire grid. Why I dont know. Maybe something about code? Maybe just because its cheap. Find a dumpy old building, put in walls and rent out the spaces as "rooms". You will find many similar arrangements around town with no ceilings. Since no ceiling you will hear snoring and all sorts of noises. Bring ear plugs or any kind of big puffy ear muffs. The door slams really loud unless the person takes care to be careful and close it slowly. Since most only stay a night they are new and dont know so it slams anyway. It makes it hard to sleep. 2 guys in different rooms got in a yelling match in the middle of the night. Not good. One thought someone was smoking and that started that. There were three bathrooms on my floor and the doors do lock so you dont have to use the toilets and showers with others coming and going like some places. So you can scout out the least offensive of the three and go for it! Always look first to see if there is any toilet paper if you think you will need it. Floors get nasty so be careful and dont even dream of going in without flip flops. I saw toilets not flushed that were not a pretty sight! I dont know if the plumbing wasnt working and they couldnt flush or if they just did it to show displeasure with the place. It sounds terrible but for $39 in NYC you cant expect much. I was there in late April 2017 and it seems as if less than 1/2 the rooms were occupied so if not many there it might not be too bad. Plus if money is tight for you, try it. What I did this trip was stay at three different cheap hotels so that way I could return to the better ones later. You loose some time transferring hotel to hotel, but you gain knowledge of whats out there so later I can feel comfortable booking longer at one. You hate to be stuck for a week at one that is REALLY bad. This one is at the edge of Chinatown and Little Italy. There isnt much to eat in the immediate block but walk a few blocks and you have tons of choices. They sell sodas and soft drinks cold for $1.25 at the check in. They had a hot water pot, Asian style too, but you have to have your own cup. Help seems to be all Chinese. The water is the kirtland brand costco water. At my costco its 2.99 for 40 or 7.5c each. They sell it for $1.25. I put down 1 paper dollar, a dime and 15 pennies. He refused it. For a 1500 % markup I thought that a bit foul. Oh well. One can get water for $1 at many other places. It has free internet but its slow to barely usable at times.

Great male dormitory for the price. Very happy with my stay here!!! :) Places like this are a great service to the community. A room in NY city between $30-50 a night saved my life. Lol

I didn't expect much for an $88 one night stay on a Saturday night. check in was smooth, first order of business was to check the perimeter of the mattress for bedbugs; didn't find any tell tale signs. bed was comfortable and we brought our own blanket, room was the size of a closet and without a window, shared bathrooms weren't terrible. of course we got the room next to the couple that banged all night and again early morning. I couldn't help but wonder what people who would dare have sex in this hotel looked like. anyway, it's like an urban camping experience. I wouldn't book here again, but it's not the worst option if you just need somewhere to crash for cheap. but you should probably be drunk for the duration of your stay in the hotel, it'll help.

Absolutely disgusting building with terrible rooms My walls were stained with what looked like dirt, blood, and poop. The sheets were all stained the pillow case was stained the towels were stained. The whole building reeks of bleach. You hear any sound made in the entire building because none of the rooms have roofs. The bathrooms seemed like shit covered in a mixture of water and piss. Literally had to rebook to a new hotel within 15 minutes of checking in. 0/10 would recommend. If I could give negative stars it wouldn't be enough

Fleas and bedbugs EVERYWHERE. I told the staff about this and they got me a new room, a new disgusting room with even more bedbugs. I had to buy insecticide myself, but it didn't work well because there were just too many of them. I got bit all over the body and it is just painful. The stay here, I would say, is the worst thing that ever happened in my life.

I can't believe this setup is legal. They cram 80 rooms the size of a department store changing room on each floor. The crowd is super sketchy and probably often attracts a criminal contingent. While this was the cheapest room I could find I would have preferred spending an extra $10 on something much nicer. The bathrooms were out of toilet paper. There were towels being used as makeshift drains. This place is a mess.

There's a lot to recommend this place as a bargain hotel for self-sufficient, hardy travellers. It's safe, cheap, in a cool part of town. Bring shower shoes and you should be fine. ONE BIG ISSUE: the free wifi works about twice a week. The rest of the time you will have a signal for 3 or 4 minutes and then it's gone. Major aggravation.

Yes the rooms are tiny, that's to be expected for this price and location. However there is no excuse for what a dump this is. They just don't care, nor do they enforce rules about noise or smoking inside. The bowery house has the same open ceiling layout but its immaculate and nicely decorated. This is linoleum, filthy paint, chicken wire ceilings and fluorescent light, filthy bathrooms rarely had tp and not enough showers per floor making me late for work. I bailed 3 nights into a week stay because the showers and people blasting music all night were affecting my ability to work. If you are a tourist that wants old school NYC grit, here ya go. Location is good but there are other nearby places just as cheap and way less sketch.

Cheap china town hotel with shared bathroom & no TV. Rooms are 30sq ft. You can't find a cheaper room in manhattan.

Ya not that great, but it served the purpose, meaning that there were actually showers and a room that had a bed in it. But the coolest part about it was that I (a 6 ft. human) could touch all 4 walls at the same time!!! No joke!!!

Do not stay here. No care, respect, and it's unbelievable that such a place is still open and running. Made a reservation, and showed up to check in and was told, I don't have a reservation. I already paid online and they refused the refund, but yet they say I don't have a reservation and on top of that they told me they're completely out of rooms. Went back and forth with the booking website and smit seemed like they were in it together. Told them I want my money back and the girl "Irene" tells me over and over again, why don't you stay, there's no problem. They took my money and gave me no room m. Poor service and on top of that they started saying it's gonna take 3~30 days for a refund. It's incredible that this place is running. Don't stay here. Stay clear away. Run! Because they will run with your money.

I wouldn't stay at this place again if you paid me, that being said I can't complain a place to sleep in Manhattan for so cheap. Noisy, smoking, ect

If you want have the worst memories from NYC then book this place, First of all I'm giving one star because I can't put any! I've never seen before something like this place . Smell so bad everywhere. The restrooms: disgusting, sorry, but any other word can describe like this. Room: you can't even fit there if you have 2 luggages. You can feel even the breath of the guest beside you. Totally disrespectful place. I'm surprised this place still open.

Absolutely disgusting. I would have taken pictures but I couldn't wait to get out of there. I stayed for an hour and saw BUGS crawling on the bed and checked out immediately. I was charged more than the man at the front desk had told me initially. The curtains were hanging up by cut electrical wires. What a NIGHTMARE.

Total last resort. If I had my car I would sleep there. ..jail has more amenities. From the time you walk in its a dump. Room is size of jail cell. No TV ...risk of bed bugs. Not advised

Don't do it. It's a small room staff is pretty rude. It smells really dirty in the room. I didn't even sleep in the room because it was smelled so bad. I just left and checked out didn't even spend a night there. They don't give your money back and it was not worth it all. If I can give them negative star I would this hotel should be shut down

It is cheap, indeed. But the rooms are not really rooms, just very small and noisy. The bathroom is ok, but I just could not bring myself to take a shower there.

Worst hotel ever. I can hear every movement in the whole floor even with ear plugs and there were always sombody walking around and the owner was argued with customers around 2 o'clock. Barely sleep whole night.
