We were on a cross-country drive from Seattle to Cleveland, detouring through the open spaces of eastern Iowa in order to view the lunar eclipse. Much to our delight, we landed at the Brackett House, on the beautiful campus of Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The house itself is a wonderful piece of history; the accommodations couldn't be lovelier. We felt at home immediately in a spacious room with a large screened porch -- perfect for in-house meals, which mattered a lot since we weren't dining in restaurants along the way. (Covid safety.) Kim is the best of innkeepers, attentive, respectful, and very helpful. Mount Vernon is a town of beautiful houses, tree-lined streets, shops and restaurants, situated in the rolling hills of eastern Iowa. You can feast your eyes on barns and silos, visit historic cemeteries (we visited one that had gravestones in Czech), hike along the Cedar River, or stop by the Eastern Iowa Observatory for a public program. ||There is a reason why Brackett House has 5 Stars from every reviewer. We stayed for two nights; wish we could have tarried longer.
