Why Last-minute Flights Are so Expensive — and How to Save Anyway

"A regional airport serving Connecticut and within reach of the New York area that acts as an alternative departure point; it can offer opportunities for lower-priced or less direct last‑minute flights for travelers who are flexible about which airport they use and willing to accept longer ground connections." - Stefanie Waldek Stefanie Waldek Stefanie Waldek is a space, travel, and design journalist with expertise in aviation, meteorology, and polar regions. Google
Security was pretty quick at least for domestic flights, parking can be hit or miss, I recommend parking in one of the exterior lots and taking the shuttle. Good amount of food shops with a decent selection of new material for books or media. Bathrooms are pretty clean and I routinely saw staff going in to maintain it.

Google
This was a fairly easy airport to navigate and appeared to be well organized. The rental car situation went well. All the rental car agencies are now cooperative with each other. You get in a line that moves fairly fast go through dome paperwork and then get the keys to your car. There is also a man managing the line and directing you to your car. The return was flawless. You just followed the signs”Rental Car Return” after turning into the airport itself. You enter a parking garage and just follow more signs. There is about five lanes for all the brands. You just pull up behind the other cars and leave the keys in the car and you are done Lots of huge signs warning you about a $450 charge if you take the keys with you. An attendant did hustle over and check the gas level.

Google
You can definitely tell you are up north. Some workers were friendly and efficient, and others were just straight up mean and rude. Nice big airport, though. There is plenty of space. Security line went smoothly with no issues at all, plenty of eating options to choose from. It's not a bad airport to be traveling in from or out.

Sybil White

Google
This is a great airport. I have been through it numerous times. Vendors, ticketing agents, baggage handlers, etc really have it together. Security moves along smoothly. Parking is easy and the shuttles are always prompt and clean. It's under some renovation, but it is not disruptive. Hotels are very close should you need to spend the night. Enjoy your flights and safe travels!

Google
Bradley International Airport is a busy but well-organized airport. Security lines can get long during peak times, but TSA moves things along efficiently. The terminals usually are clean and have a decent variety of food and coffee options. Only downside is parking—it’s pricey and can fill up fast. Overall, a solid travel hub for us.

Google
Nice, updated, quick in and out. Plan little more time for rental car and for parking. However there are many benefits to flying into a small airport.

Gerry Palermo

Google
Nice airport! Plenty of meal choices if you arrive hungry. Lots places to sit, both before and after security check-in. They had a series of musicians play their instruments on stage to enjoy. A few cute shops to browse. Clean bathrooms although the soap and towel dispensers are innovative but just slightly annoying.

Ed Holden

Google
Bradley is an interesting place. They have flights that are good deals. Inside, it's definitely airporty in most respects. But it's also a small airport. I've found that when they get really busy, they go a little over a sane capacity and lines get extra long ... without sufficient space for the lines. Economy parking isn't a garage, it's a field. Our airline told us to arrive two hours early, but the check-in wasn't open then. But in most respects it's well run, has some good snacks and restaurants, and shouldn't be too much of a hassle as long as you're not in a rush.

Yelp
We had a rental car this trip... the airport's layout makes it easy to park (return rental car), walk over to the airlines via the enclosed causeway and get through security. The Airport has an American Express Lounge called the "Escape Lounge" located in Concourse A. The name made me think "Escape Room" (lol), but it's a decent size and very relaxing if you have time to grab a bite/drink before boarding your flight. Five stars for accessibility and having an AE lounge.
google avatar

Iva S.

Yelp
The way they have the airport set up is crazy. To get to the TSA pre-check, you have to walk all the way to the other side of the entire terminal, just to get through TSA pre-check, and then walk all the way back to the other end of the terminal to get to your gate. BDL... who was the engineers that bought off on that layout??? They screwed up... Toni, from Jet Blue for saving my ass today!!! thank you Three stars because of Toni!!

Yelp
Over the past year, I've utilized Bradley int. Airport more frequently. I usually will travel down to New York, stay with family and go to JFK or LaGuardia to be mindful of price but lately the flights haven't been too expensive from Hartford. The airport is clean and very accessible from 91. There are plenty of food options, shout out, Jamba Juice, and the seats aren't too awful while waiting for your flight.
google avatar

Kristin H.

Yelp
Not a very large airport but still runs pretty efficiently. The security process was relatively quick and painless, as far as TSA checks go. They have a fair amount of places to eat, as well as an airport lounge that we were able to utilize that was a nice break from the hustle of the airport. We also rented a car, which was an easy process. They even switched the car for something a little smaller and did so quickly. Most of the employees were friendly and the airport was clean. Not a bad flying experience.

Yelp
I cannot believe there is yelp for an airport. but with that being said, this place is kind of nice I guess. For an irrelevant Connecticut airport, I had a pleasant experience.
google avatar

Joanna M.

Yelp
This is not a huge airport. The TSA precheck line is by itself at the far side of terminal with clear and the regular line in the middle of the terminal. There are several restaurants and shops to check out while you wait to depart. The ride share pickup is outside of the baggage claim in the 2nd line with rental car pickup.
google avatar

Maya P.

Yelp
Small airport and easy to navigate. Some good accommodations and amenities if you have time to kill. The bar here right after you get past security has a nice selection of drinks and food. Staff was really friendly as well.
google avatar

Tanya B.

Yelp
Decent airport with many flight options. TSA lines are long early in the morning. There's never any toilet paper in the restrooms only downfall.
google avatar

Vivian V.

Yelp
Is a convenient and clean airport, I use a fee time a year on my flights form FL to CT, strategically located in New England region easy connect major cities in the area. The distribution of the gates are easy to find, check points located at entrance also moves quickly. You can also find options to eat and drink while to wait for your flight to depart Is clean, illuminated and organized.
google avatar

S J.

Yelp
The maze to get throught to TSA was almost comical. I have never had my bag flagged for search, until I got here. If I was in a hurry in this airport, I would be livid
google avatar

Dang N.

Yelp
I liked this airport. Small, quiet, and clean. No issues with my rental also. Unsure why the ratings are so low.
google avatar

Yelp
Today I flew out of Bradley International Airport. The facilities were clean and well-maintained, creating a welcoming atmosphere for travelers. The staff at JetBlue was friendly and helpful, making the check-in and security processes smooth and efficient. Going through security with TSA was a breeze! The airport's layout is easy to navigate, with clear signage and ample seating areas. I appreciated the variety of dining and shopping options available, providing a range of choices for passengers.
google avatar

Lynn G.

Yelp
Nice airport. Too far (1/4 mile? with bulky luggage) to walk to rental cars. Last time I was here 7 yrs ago, a shuttle brought us curbside to rental cars.
google avatar

Shanina S.

Yelp
I love leaving out of Bradley Airport. It's a smaller airport and easy to navigate. The lines for TSA are really quick with short lines. The four largest carriers at Bradley International Airport are Southwest, Delta, JetBlue, and American Airlines.
google avatar

Vesna A.

Yelp
I literally went to their airport just to get my flight canceled when I had a plane trip to Florida on Frontier Airlines! If you go to their airport DO NOT go on frontier because we paid 3,000 just for a cancelled flight?! Yep one star review!
google avatar

Sandra O.

Yelp
Nice small airport with friendly staff. Very bad selection of restaurants or coffee places. No I don't drink Starbucks. The TSA pre clearance line was so long. My line was short and quick as I didn't spend 100
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
I had a pretty smooth experience at this airport. I was able to walk to the garage and get a rental car through a heated tunnel with minimal contact with the outdoors, which in bad weather could be a difference-maker. Going on a weekday meant it wasn't overly crowded, and I waited only a couple of minutes for my TSA precheck line when flying back. I didn't have any trouble finding seats or facilities. The electric outlets were somewhat limited and dated and I wasn't overwhelmed by the businesses there, and my departing flight was taxiing around a bit before it departed a few minutes late. But all things considered, relatively smooth.

Yelp
I have been employed with the TSA Department of Homeland Security for 15 years. I have seen many awesome sunrises. But this one was exceptionally breathtaking. I'm blessed and highly favored as I get to see the sunrise every day. We also designed our airport for the Christmas holidays. If you're ever flying out for 3 a.m., take a pic. Yelp
Coming from a huge airport like LAX BDL is such a nice change of pace. There is one terminal which is similar to Tom Bradley for me. After going through security there are gates to the left and gates to the right. Pretty much, you won't loose your way and there aren't throngs of people around. Getting though security wasn't too much of a hassle. For arrivals, again, I'm used to LAX/BUR chaos, but here it's a breeze. Private vehicles can wait for passengers as long as they do not leave the car. There is an area for shuttles that is divided by an island. For getting into Downtown Hartford, take the semi-direct shuttle 30X. Times are posted, but not necessarily accurate.
google avatar

Gayl B.

Yelp
Flew into and out of here recently and was rather shocked at the limited places to grab a bite to eat after exiting the terminal. Dunkin Donut just doesn't offer any real food, so we ended up going to the Sheraton that's walking distance. (That's a whole other story though). What's great about this small airport? It's easy to get around and there wasn't a ton of people. It's easy to get to Amherst (rather than flying into Boston). What's bad about a small airport? There's limited food options after TSA and when exiting by baggage claim. Not every airline flies in here (no Alaska Airlines here). Limited flights. No direct flights to Washington state on Delta... flights were thru Minneapolis. I think this is the case for most airlines flying west from here--you have to connect somewhere. Check your airline of choice before deciding that Bradley is the place.
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
In a sense this truly beats having to fight any NYC airports so that is a huge plus. On the other side Bradley does not really have the food offerings of a modern airport (although there are some, if open). It seems slightly boring or sterile. But you can get to many major connecting cities and even larger jets stop by.
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
BDL is a great international airport. It is laid out well, so the flow is easy to move around. You'll find your departure gate, or the baggage carousel easily. They even have a good variety of restaurants and retail shops to meet and fill your needs. If your travels take you to or through BDL, you'll be pleased.
google avatar

Anrana S.

Yelp
Considering it is a small airport - only 12 gates -- it's not laid out very well. It was hard to find water filling station and restrooms only had a few stalls leading wailer long lines. Outlets were non-existent for phone charging. Ground crew was fast. Our plane landed, was I boarded, cleaned, refueled and reboarded and headed to the runway in 1 hour flat.
google avatar

Dan P.

Yelp
Small, easy to access airport. With TSA pre check, quick security screening. Real negative of this airport is the free WiFi. It's so slow that it's useless. Had to tether to my phone to check email on my laptop. Three stars because internet was nonexistent. Bathrooms dirty.
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
You can't throw a stick without hitting an insurance executive in Hartford! I worked in that industry for many years, so I've been through here at least fifty times or more. I was visiting friends, so this was maybe the fifty first. Retail- I get annoyed when I see folks rant and rave about little things in a review. So what if you can't get a burger at your favorite chain and need to get one from plan B. That goes for coffee, and adult libations as well. As long as I can get a burger, a coffee, and a beer, I'm fine. After all, I'm not living there! The choices here are acceptable for a baby airport. It's a small airport so you're not gonna walk a lot or get lost. The place is clean. If you arrive very early or very late much of the retail is going to be closed. If you don't expect that, you are a very novice traveler! If I'm arriving very early, I always stop on the airport approach roads and grab my caffeine and a sammich. I guarantee you something will be open. The Important Stuff- When you think about it, most folks only do three things at an airport. Car to plane, plane to car and sometimes plane to plane all on a timely basis. Mess with those three things, and I'm going to get cranky! Fortunately, these fine folks rarely miss these three. TSA is fine and rental cars are easy. If you don't have PreCheck and affiliate cards for your rental, somebody probably dropped you on your head as a child! I have a test for airports. When I'm looking at my itinerary, and I see an airport name, and my blood pressure does not go up, it's a winner and that's the case here. My fellow Yelpers average 3.5 stars but I'm going the extra half star for four!

Yelp
BDL is probably an airport I'll never visit again in my life, simply because there is no reason for my to visit Conneticut again. I had to travel here for a wedding, and I arrived late (around 11:47PM). For a regional airport this airport is actually kind of nice. It's not big, and it has two terminals - I believe there are actually some international flights that fly out of here too. There isn't a preferred airline, so there is an equivalent amount of gates for all airlines. I flew Delta, and was able to get in and out quickly when I arrived due to the size of the airport! They have one airport lounge - it's the Escape Lounge by American Express - not too big but it feels exclusive and I liked waiting in there. The airport has CLEAR which was surprising to see considering it's a small airport, but I'll take it any day! On my departing day, I was surprised to see how packed the airport was.. It was SO packed. I was in line and one person was saying she flies out of here weekly and this is the busiest she's ever seen this airport. Even with CLEAR, I waited a long time. Checking bags also has a weird system here. You have to visit the Delta agent and confirm your bag, and then take your bag to the TSA x-ray station. They don't take it off your hands there, which I thought was weird. All in all - it's a pretty decent airport. The long wait on Sunday morning and the weird baggage system makes it 3 stars for me vs. 4.

Yelp
Cute little airport with a single terminal. Work brought me to CT this week and it was my first visit to CT. ARRIVAL 5 Being a small airport, it was easy to navigate and quickly find my way to ground transportation. DEPARTURE 3 The security lanes were closed near my airline gates so I had to walk to another area to go through security. Not worried .. just a few more minutes and got in a few more steps before boarding. As a frequent traveler, I have multiple 'travel perks' to make the security check-in process more efficient. Once I got to the open security lanes, I was delighted to see a dedicated priority passenger lane, stood in line, provided my drivers license, and was then informed that the line is not for TSA pre and I would have to exit the lane and go to the end of the TSA pre line. At all other airports I've been through, TSA has offered a way to route priority passengers to join the TSA pre check security queue. So while I thought I was in the correct (more efficient) line, I ended up waiting through 2 security lines at this airport. Averaging my overall airport experience to 4 While the arrival process was smooth and efficient, the departure experience (the one where a few minutes could mean missing your flight) has opportunities for improvement. A small airport usually means no fuss, easy security check-ins. If you're departing through Bradley International, make sure you leave a few minutes for some 'run around.'
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
Easy access, clean and good food choices. Very impressed that they offered the CLEAR service.
google avatar

Lorraine G.

Yelp
Convenient to Massachusetts. Not super busy but still an international airport. Southwest and Delta are the primary airlines. Direct flights to Dublin with Aer Lingus.
google avatar

Thomas L.

Yelp
Power tip: Return at Enterprise was speedy but hope for no surprise charges. TSA guy didn't let me ask about dumping the water before the screening, and of course the container got flagged *roll* Thank goodness the lady at the other end of the X-rays was understanding. She was also understanding of the curved toy that the female couple had ahead of me. :D The American Express lounge was nice enough. The espresso martini was tasty! Love the double chocolate cookies.
google avatar

Shannah H.

Yelp
Small, clean and light-filled airport, which is great. However the logistics could be improved. It's a hike to rental cars, bathrooms, water fountains and more. All in all surprising when you're talking about a place with only a dozen or so gates. But our flights were on time arriving and departing and at the end of the day that's what matters most to me.
google avatar

Timothy A.

Yelp
Flew with Delta to and from my destination. Check-in through TSA was smooth. I know. Smooth. Plenty of food options. Could use some more charging stations, but we don't need those devices anyway. Lots of parking. Yep, that's it. It's an airport.
google avatar

Shane B.

Yelp
A very big airport with a hotel and NGL it's awesome. You can look at the planes taking off, have an amazing view and so much more, when I got here for my birthday. The check in lady gave me a free bowling ticket. I love bowling. 10/10 come to this if you don't have anywhere else to go and while your at it. Go fly to somewhere

Leah W.

Yelp
AWFUL airport that has ZERO organization. Every time I am here I am surrounded by miserable people who PAYED for the experiences they received. The least the airport can do is function and this one doesn't even do that. This airport should go bankrupt and it isn't even an international airport. The "international" part is a SHED with ONE GATE. Anyways yeah I hate being here right now; what a joke.
google avatar

Tricia B.

Yelp
I love this airport - it's small, easy to navigate, easy to find a place to check in, relatively short security lines, and the terminals aren't long enough to have to make any death marches through the crowds from point A to point B. The employees have always been chill and focused. The food is more expensive then outside the airport, but that's true anywhere. There are a few newsstand shops with reading material and (expensive) snacks, as well as Connecticut souvenirs. If you're being picked up, there is a cell phone lot where someone can wait for your call. There are also long-term parking lots in the area that will shuttle your to the airport; occasionally one of them will have a Groupon.
google avatar

Kris H.

Yelp
Easy airport to navigate because it's on the smaller size, but lots of flight options. Not a lot of choices for food, which is frustrating. Wish they had an Einstein Bagels or Starbucks in the terminal area. There is a Dunkin, so as long as there aren't a ton of people departing around the same time you can grab something there. Lots of parking options, open lots or a covered garage.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
The airport is small but easier to get to than LaGuardia if you live in the area. The employees at the check in are all very friendly. TSA pre check is very fast. The airport is fairly clean. I understand it is an airport so the main walkways are clean of debris. The seats are filthy and do need a wipe down. The free airport WIFI is not reliable or stable. Tether to your phone if you have an tablet or laptop.
google avatar

Farah A.

Yelp
If you're flying into Connecticut I highly recommend flying into Bradley Int. Airport. It's quick, clean, efficient and the staff is great! TSA is never overly packed (literally never wait longer than 5-10 min in line. Staff is great and never really give a hard time. The airport is the perfect size, not too big, not too small but perfect enough to get to your terminal with no rush or worries. They have a bar style restaurant, Mcdonalds, Dunkin Donuts, auntie Annies, carvel, a bar, and a few other spots around for you to catch a bite before your flight.
google avatar

Jim L.

Yelp
This isn't a huge airport but they have the normal airport vendors, just not as many of them. The prices are high all over an airport. You are a captive customer with limited choices. I was at Phillips Seafood which was mediocre food and spotty service. My flight was delayed so I looked through the entire airport and decided to stop at Black Bear Saloon and the atmosphere was a bit better but crowded at times. The service is better there too. The drinks were better. The food was good. Security lines moved at a decent pace too.
google avatar

Deshika B.

Yelp
I did not expect this small airport to rival some of the larger ones I've passed through, but it did! You can get a massage, 5 course meal, take a shower, hang out at several bars, or find something for your kids to do during layovers/waiting to board your plane. From the outside and even driving up to this airport, you don't expect much, but once inside you're blown away. Tall enough inside to fit several planes, with floor to ceiling windows that provide beautiful views of Connecticut and planes arriving and leaving, several lounge areas with more computer and phone charging stations than I've seen in my life, and a very quick, easy, no nonsense TSA experience. Definitely one of my favorite airports.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
For being a local airport right next door to family now I remember why I always travel to JFK or Logan. Staff were unfriendly and it was so crazy & cramped. Flights are more expensive as well.
google avatar

Crystal O.

Yelp
This one is a little hard to rate- because my initial reaction was ew- this place is dirty. When I arrived just before 8pm on a Thursday- there was trash on the floors at numerous gates. It was late enough some of the shops were closed or closing- no matter, I was leaving, but it made me wonder how my departure would be. Then over my visit my sis-in-law warned that the TSA there could be rude- ugh. I have been through TSA where the agents were rude. It is not the way to start a flight. Good thing- TSA was fine- no problems, I even made it through the scanner without having to be wanded after (shocker- I have metal left in my body after surgery from years ago). AND- the terminal and gates were clean on my departing day- which was very nice since I was dropped off early and spent 3 hours in the airport. Dunkin was a disappointment- but I don't blame the airport for that. Biggest reason for the middle of the road rating- not adequate charging stations. It's my airport pet peeve.
google avatar

Edward H.

Yelp
Really nicely run local airport. I always love flying out of here. And returning, even though I have to occasionally connect through another airport to get to a distant destination.
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
Long walks from the terminal to the main entrance, should have more people movers or a tram. I don't favor flying in here, next time I'm going to try JKF
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
True Score: 3.5 Stars Not Bad This airport serves it's purpose. Parking is simple, navigation is easy, and you can get better deals on flights from here. It's an airport and it isn't terrible, that's a plus. Thanks
google avatar

Jane E.

Yelp
BDL is a nice airport to fly into. We usually fly in late and leave super early, so not all of the restaurants are always open if needed. But if you're early, you can always count on Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds to get you started before your flight. At the gates there are charging stations for your cell phones and laptops as needed. Restrooms are "always" clean and so are the waiting areas. Social distancing is enforced and masks are required. It's a smaller airport, but it has the basics that you need. So it does make you feel very comfortable travelling in and out of there. The TSA pre-check line is always on top of things and are super friendly. They get you through thoroughly and quickly and is much appreciated!
google avatar

Daryl P.

Yelp
I really wish that I was checking in and writing a review for a flight I was taking but unfortunately Covid makes things a little difficult. Regardless dropped by the hotel for their blood drive. I imagine that it's for more of the airport staff but took advantage of the day off to make a difference. The hotel was simple, empty and well maintained even with few travelers on their grounds. One of the few times that going to the airport is simple.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
I've traveled internationally for over 40 years and this was hands down the absolute worst experience ever. I feel like a criminal assumed guilty. Wow!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
One of the reasons I love this airport so much is how small and easy it is. One place to go through security. Super easy to walk to the gates. Not a lot of food places and they close early so just make sure to bring your own snacks. Free WiFi, pretty clean bathrooms and waiting areas. No way will you get lost here. I love how close this airport is to MA as well.
