Day Trips in Philadelphia

"Only 40 minutes from Philadelphia, this park is a peaceful getaway from the city. With 1,000 acres of hills, woodland, and meadows, it’s an ideal spot for hikers who want to explore the 14 miles of trails. The Brandywine Creek is filled with bass and trout, so it’s a popular fishing spot. There’s even a disc golf course, which is $8 for out-of-state visitors. When it’s summer, bring a tube to lazily drift along the Brandywine Creek. In the winter, trade the water tube for a toboggan, and sled down one of Brandywine’s hills. It’s popular during the fall and winter months, so keep that in mind when planning your trip." - MATADOR_NETWORK

I love this trail. Perfect place to get away from society and bask in the beauty of nature. We hiked the entire loop pretty much 4.5 miles in about 2 hours. Definitely kid/pet friendly. Lots of space to go off and smoke without disturbing anyone.

November 8, 2025 - Beautiful park. About a 2 mile paved walking trail. There are also natural trails off of the paved trail some go along the water. It had rained the night before so the trails were a little muddy and the wet leaves made things slippery so I stuck to the paved trail. One trailhead has restrooms and picnic tables. They allow bow and arrow deer hunting season but it is clearly marked. A family of deer crossed my path right in front of me. You can see one deer jumping across the path in one picture. The mom and baby crossed in front of me and I could hear rustling in the woods so I waited patiently for the dad to appear. Very peaceful. When the trails are not muddy, make sure you explore off on them. This is part of the Delaware Greenway system - make sure you check out all the other paths.

I came to Brandywine Creek State Park on a day when life felt a bit heavy. Too many tasks… too much noise… and I honestly needed a place to breathe." "At first, I wasn’t sure if a simple walk in the park would help. But the moment I stepped onto the trail, everything changed." The sound of the running creek… The cold wind brushing the trees… The open sky that felt bigger than my worries… "Halfway through the trail, I stopped near the water. It was quiet—peaceful in a way I haven’t felt in years. For the first time in a long time, my mind slowed down." And that’s when the solution hit me: "Sometimes you don’t need to fix the whole world… You just need to step away from it for a moment." Brandywine Creek State Park isn’t just a place to walk— It’s a reset button for your mind. Highly recommended for anyone who needs clarity, calm, or simply a breath of fresh air. — Elattar Reviews 🌟

Great State Park in Northern Delaware, it continuation of First State Park. Long walk with different terrains. Along with River side trail will be too good and meadows walk as well.

Went on a wagon ride for $10 a person. It was the best time of year for sure. The ride was followed up with a fire and marshmallows to roast.

If you plan to hang out, make sure to get your park pass. You can get a yearly one, but I just got it for the day. Since I was out of state, it was $8.00. There are outside places to pay, but I got mine at the Nature Center. As you can see by the photos and videos, it is well worth the cost. You can also get your Passport Stamp for First State - Delaware. The Nature Center is a must for the kids as it has a viewing room and a bunch of nature stuff to see and read. There is a mini gift shop if you want some souvenirs. There is an area to go exploring in the woods to see some of the wildlife. Most of the area is open fields though, so good for kids to run around. There are plenty of places to picnic and there are some grills available for use. If interested, there is frisbee golf, but make sure it isn’t windy. It is pet friendly as I saw a few people with dogs.

This park offers both easier hiking (flat) and more challenging hiking (hills.) The views of the creek are beautiful. With the national park land being right next to the state park, there are plenty of trails to hike. This is a lovely, relaxing park.

Love that we have the Brandywine so close to our home, it’s my happy place. Although, since Delaware is so whacked they’re letting the homeless move in. Be safe when you’re on the trails as some homeless have tents up. The park can’t remove them because they need to contact the homeless person first…house bill 135- stupidity. I was told by a park personnel as well, that be careful as homeless folks tend to have mh issues/drug problems. So drug paraphernalia may be around their encampment. Great, huh?! Keep our parks safe Delaware I am more than disgusted by your lack of concern for the citizens and park goers. So what I took from the Brandywine when I called/ emailed was - the homeless can be dangerous and leave drug paraphernalia behind, but hey we can’t help you so good luck in the park. Be safe on your own lol.

Yelp
Love this place! We Had a lot of fun tubing from the northeast corner of the parking lot at the Chadds ford - brandywine river museum of art parking lot to the smith bridge road parking lot! (The museum told me that they do charge for parking on the weekends for tubers. The trip took us 3 hrs and 43 minutes with the water level at 1.92 on the usgs sensor at the museum sensor #01481000. I used a regular walmart intex river run tube and weighing in at 220lbs did not have to portage or get out of the tube at all on this stretch. Paddles are recommended , though we did not bring them. Also make sure you have watershoes. There are portable toilets, trash receptacles, grills and picnic tables at the smith bridge road parking lot.

Yelp
I visited Winterthur and walked to the Brandywine Creek State Park from there. The trails are beautiful and I especially liked walking alongside the river! If you like trails or hanging out in the outdoors you should definitely visit!
