I recently had dinner at Vaca Loca in the old town of Tarifa, and the food itself was fantastic. It’s a cute, cozy spot, and I ordered the beef fillet, which was absolutely incredible — one of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time. They offer extra condiments, but you honestly don’t need anything with that steak. It was perfect just as it is.
The only part that wasn’t great was the service. When I sat down, the servers finishing their shift were very kind — they took my drink order and offered to help recommend items from the menu. But when I was ready to order my food, the server who had been helping me ended his shift and left. The new server didn’t come to take my order; he actually took the order of the table that arrived after me.
I waited around 10 minutes or more, and when he finally came over, he apologized because he thought I had already ordered. It wasn’t the end of the world, but it did feel a bit disorganized.
At the end, they asked if I wanted to add a tip, and I felt a bit pressured. Normally, tipping isn’t really expected in Spain the way it is elsewhere, and considering the wait and mix-up, I didn’t feel the service fully justified it — but I still tipped anyway.
On a positive note, they brought a complimentary shot of liqueur, which was a very nice touch and helped end the meal on a good note.
Overall, despite the service hiccup, the food was truly excellent. If I’m ever back in Tarifa, I’d return for the steak alone — it was that good. I just hope the service is a little smoother next time.
