Restaurant Review: The Otter and Brass in New York City

"Set deep inside the Evelyn Hotel, behind reception and a sister cocktail lounge, this brasserie-styled restaurant trades in a heavy-lidded, sultry atmosphere—velvet banquettes, frilled Art Nouveau chandeliers, and mirrors hung with faux Corbusier nudes—anchored by a baby-grand piano that supplies live music. Led by chef-partners Jeremiah Stone and Fabián von Hauske, the menu imports the duo’s Contra/Wildair creativity into French brasserie territory: fruits de mer, fromage, charcuterie, and aggressively tweaked classics. The kitchen’s playful twists can be hit-or-miss (marinated mussels over chickpea-flour panisse, denser-than-expected gougères, a soggy tarte flambée), but ambitious projects shine—the $135 deboned chicken roulade served in a copper gratin atop potato and celery-root purée is a showpiece—and desserts range from yuzu-meringue tart to a blackberry-studded vanilla-custard slice. The room’s initial buzz has softened on later visits, leaving a sparser late-night scene despite attentive service and an upstairs lounge that draws some hotel guests away." - Matthew Schneier

Restaurants Have Embraced White Tablecloths Once Again

"Under owner Nick Hatsatouris, this new restaurant introduces white tablecloths despite his lack of prior experience with linens; he attributes part of the broader shift back to formality to pandemic-era dining changes and sees linens as part of making going out feel like a special experience." - Anna Hezel

We were there as entertainment for a party. The bartender was very busy and appeared to know what he was doing. He was busy caring for his customers every time I checked. Every staff member I encountered was very nice. The food next door looked good from what I could see.

Just discovered the ultimate burger and fries joint nestled in Urban Chestnut’s Beer Garden! It’s called Brass Bar. The ambiance is unbeatable – laid back and chill. enjoying your meal with some live music in the sunshine. Now, let's talk about the food: crispy fries paired with beer cheese might be a match the beats peas and carrots! A definite must-try for all burger/fries enthusiasts out there!

So, visiting Brass Bar has been on my list for a long time and I finally got to go last night! The atmosphere there is really nice, great date spot aesthetic for sure. It’s fake and candle lit, created a very intimate environment. I ordered the Stonewall Spritzer and the How Very for drinks. Both took a few sips for my taste buds to acclimate but afterwards there were really good and strong! I definitely want to go back and try the full range of the cocktails! For food I had ordered the bistro steak and frites. The fries were really good and the steak was good too, though overcooked a tad. However, customer service where this bar soars into one of my top spots in STL. After I had told my server that it was over cooked a little bit, he made sure that that didn’t ruin my experience (although it wouldn’t have anyway, I still finished it!). They ended up taking it off my bill, that was super unexpected and I really appreciate them making sure that I was happy with my experience. I will definitely be back for that sort of hospitality alone! Lastly, I ordered the blueberry baked Alaska off of their dessert menu and it was FANTASTIC! So good, I would definitely come just to order that and cocktails alone hahaha You should definitely check out Brass Bar if you get a chance. I really enjoyed my time there!
