It’s hard to give contrasting reviews but this restaurant had a balance of both average and below average. Sometimes institutions forget why they are institutions, and I feel in this case it was so.
We were looking for the best Parisian Moules Frites, and La Lorraine was highly recommended. The booking process and confirmation all ok, arrival was good but once food arrived it was then a challenge. Starting off with small cheese bread pops, served cold, I would have expected at least these to be made to order taking 5 mins to cook.
We ordered the seafood platter with oysters, prawns and langoustines, cold of course on ice. The oysters and prawns, delicious. The langoustines felt like they had been left in water, cooked ok but left in the ice bath too long meaning the flesh was watery. The flavour was ok when paired with the homemade mayonnaise. The bread was also so hard it was impossible to cut. Pity. The table was not scraped before moving to the next course, a typical expectation of this type of establishment.
Following this, the reason we came, Moules frites! The biggest disappointment, they were well overcooked, rubbery and tiny. Some the size of a pea, and just the detail like some smashed shells, we know that means you can’t tell if they were dead before cooking, and many empty shells which is unusual. They were also uncleaned with all still containing the beard, not a nice way to eat mussels is with an occasional crunch. The watery sauce lacked the aroma and flavour, the first time I could not imagine dipping my bread in to sweep. All this means is probably cooked from frozen in huge volume. Shame.
I shared my feedback with the staff and we left disappointed, and having paid a premium for below average food.
I hope your experience will be nicer than ours.
