An insider’s guide to Dusseldorf, Germany - SilverKris

"A traditional German brewery celebrated for its full-bodied altbier and hearty Rhineland cuisine; signature dishes include pork knuckles and oxtail. When visiting, expect the local custom of servers topping up small glasses of beer until you place your coaster on top to signal you want them to stop." - SilverKris

Randomly drop by this restaurant. No issues with staff conversing in English. Waiter was very helpful , polite and patient. Food portion for both pork knuckle and spaghetti are very generous and tasty! Prawns are fresh and very juicy. I will definitely drop by here when I am in dusseldorf next time.

Hi W.

Google
It's a very large restaurant and beer laden. They can host hundreds of guests With such volume they also do a good service by covering guests. Although sometimes you may not see them back but a reminder necessary Their heer is tasty and also they offer varieties of non alcoholic drinks. Their food was also tasty and nicely done. It's located in the old town and no parking space available.

Came here for the pork knuckles like most people. It didn't disappoint. Since we were with a big party, 9 people. They gave us two shared platters instead of individual plates. The skin of the pork knuckles is very crispy and the meat is a bit dry, but still ok. The schnitzel were recommended to us, but it was just ok, not very delicious. The rest of the dishes on the platter were just average. If you haven't already had pork knuckles before in Germany, I'd recommend just getting that. The staff were friendly, but didn't understand English very well. But we managed.

Was drawn by the fact that it's the oldest restaurant in Dusseldorf. It was empty when we arrived at 645pm but quickly filled up by 730pm. Service was fantastic while the food is above average. We enjoyed the cozy ambience and glad we had a dinner here

Google
Thanks for the recommendation from the locals. Authentic Bavarian food with great combination of beer. The crispness of pork loin and sour curds resonances perfectly. Can’t get any better meal to start the journey at Düsseldorf.

Napoleon ate here after a batle back in 1811. The skin on the pork knockles is like crispy gold. The gravy on the sausage will perish all enimies. The Mezzo mix drink will tingle your senses. Need I say more.

Google
First of all if you want to go you need to have a reservation, otherwise you will wait for hours in the queue. The place is very crowded and noisy. Some of the waiters are nice and some are rude. For the food we had the schnitzel some of the plates were ok and the other were oily and did not taste good.

Google
SO good! We wanted to have a German meal on our visit and this did not disappoint. I had never had pork knuckle but highly recommend it! So crispy. We also got the carpaccio appetizer and one of the bratwurst dishes. The sauerkraut was also delicious and the service was great! Super big inside and a great atmosphere. A must go for your visit in Düsseldorf!

Yelp
The Brauerei zum Schiffchen is a real institution in the Düsseldorf food scene, with a long history. It's located in the heart of the Altstadt (Old Town) and its decor reflects its glorious and long past. Over the years, it has become more and more touristic but it's also still a place loved by many locals. They serve a lot of local beers, in particular the bitter, dark Alt which is typical from this area. Their menu offers a lot of dishes from the regional German cuisine including the renowned Rheinischer Sauerbraten (roast beef), Mettfleish (raw pork) and a lot of various wurst (sausages). The service is fast and prices are fair. It can get quite packed so it's always good to book well in advance.

Yelp
Our last meal in Düsseldorf was at Brauerei zum Schiffchen. They're located in the old part of town. We dropped in on a Monday (around 12:30pm). The weather was a bit dreary so everyone was sitting inside for once. Our server spoke perfect English but he was a bit rough around the edges. This was the only restaurant we went to where English was already on the menu. The menu consisted of starters & soups, house specialties, fish and dessert. There also was a seasonal sheet and a few daily specials including a business set menu (€15,50). - Alsterwasser (€3,20 for 0.30L) - light beer with lemonade. This was a mix of pilsner with a splash of lemonade. - Himmel & ähd (€12,50) - blutwurst (fried black pudding), mashed potatoes, fried onions and stewed apples. Not sure why but their fried onions don't come hot nor crispy. The blutwurst was interesting; lightly crisped and the filling was tasty. Mashed potatoes were buttery. - Metzgers leibgericht (€14,50) - three sausages (mettwurst, thüringer art bratwurst and krakauer) with sauerkraut and homemade mashed potatoes. Mettwurst was a thicker, meatier, minced pork sausage. Krakauer (similar to a a Polish kielbasa) was slightly salty but had a good bite. Bratwurst was our favourite of the bunch; easily the tastiest and most flavourful. Sauerkraut was hot and well balanced in acidity. Mashed potatoes were the same (wish they would let you choose other sides to try). An enjoyable last German meal (and for once, not too heavy). 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Giving it 5 stars as I have never been disappointed coming here. This place is an institution and has some history to it. The harbor of the Rhine River used to be close to the restaurant and if it was good for Napoleon and his Generals it is a place to go. The food does not disappoint and service has always been ok with some roughness, which belongs to the Altstadt. Touristy, but also popular with the locals.

Yelp
THE VENUE-- Zum Schiffchen has a great location. It is near all the shops, close to the Rhein River, and just a short 10 to 15 minute walk from the Rhein Tower. THE SERVICE-- The servers that we had spoke great English. They were courteous without being ingenuous. I found them to be helpful and efficient at their jobs. THE PRICE-- The prices aren't terribly high, depending on what you order, a person can have a great meal with drinks for less than 20 to 25 euros. Bring an appetite because the portions are large. THE FOOD-- I had a bratwurst dish that came with three kinds of brats, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. Everything was extremely good. My wife had the braised beef with potatoes, fried apples and red sauerkraut. It was delicious too. Overall, I don't think you can go wrong ordering a plate of food from this establishment. Everything I saw coming from the kitchen looked awesome. THE BEER-- I had four beers, but tried only three kinds. The dark was my favorite followed by a pilsner. Zum Schiffchen's pilsner is a light beer that goes down really easy. Non-beer drinkers may appreciate it. The ale was my least favorite. It was a bit skunky for my liking, but didn't have a bad after taste. FINAL THOUGHTS-- My recommendation is to try this place out when in Dusseldorf. Particularly if it is your last night in town.

Yelp
Good schnitzel and beer. I came here twice on a 3 day trip to Dusseldorf. First visit was outside. I ate the sausage platter with sauerkraut and alt beer. The sausages were flavourful with a nice balance of flavours across the 3. Second time was for a conference event. The service was incredibly slow and the inside air temperature must have been ~40degC inside and the wait staff would not open any windows (they said they were instructed not to). It seemed to be a ploy to sell more beer. I do not recommend eating here indoors on a hot day. Very uncomfortable, especially when busy.

Yelp
If you find yourself is downtown Dusseldorf make sure you check this place out. First of all, it has tons of history. It is one of the oldest beer halls in all of Germany and has been around since the 1600s. In 1811 Napoleon and some of his Generals got drunk here is a corner of the hall after a victory parade - now called Napoleon's corner. The beer is great, I went with the local, darker ale - I forget the name, but everyone will be drinking it so you can just point. I had the fried pigs leg (yes, a whole leg fried), sauerkraut and potatoes and several beers. It was all delicious and no wonder why this place has been around so long and has so much history.

Yelp
One of the oldest surviving restaurant in Europe perhaps. The staff has reference that Napoleon dined at this establishment. The interior decoration is very attractive and adds to the ambience of the place. The waiters were attentive, most spoke English, and provided English-language menus. The quality of the food was excellent. I stuck to local specialties like the ox tail soup, pork knuckle and the Wienerschnitzel (not all in one seating) which were served in huge portions and were well cooked and nicely presented. This place is a "must"!

Yelp
If you're looking for a typical one, this is the place to go. But DO book in advance for best experience

Yelp
A pleasant place to eat located in the innerstadt of Duesseldorf. We thought it would be a relatively small restaurant, and so made reservations. It's big with seating for several hundred. The menu is typical German cusine: it's well prepared and reasonably priced for the area. For me, the big draw is the interior decoration - mostly old stained wood and a ship motiff.

Yelp
Ate here on a work trip after trying to go to Schweine Janes for a couple of days. Would highly recommend this versus the other popular place. Much more of an authentic German experience versus Schweine Janes.

Yelp
II will start with the service: we requested a "romantic table." They gave us a table in the corner, very quiet, that could have seated 8! I asked if there was a mistake, but they said that this was their most romantic table, and they were happy for us to have it! The local beer (Frankenheimer Alt) was delicious, and the wine list (if you want one while you are in a brewery) is good and not overpriced. We had the fried pigs knuckle -- more than half of the guests seem to order this. We've had this other places, and this was among the best. We did not order starters. Unless you have run a marathon (or maybe an ultramarathon) you really don't need anything else to eat. Even dessert afterwards would probably be too much. The ambiance is beer hall for sure. But clean, warm, not too bright, great service...and not smoky at all. To sum it up in one sentence. Although we are only in Dusseldorf for two nights, after eating at zum Schiffchen on our first night, we cancelled our other plans for the second evening and went back.

Yelp
Food: 3 1/2 stars. Pork knuckle was crispy, tender and delicious. Service: 2 stars. The middle aged German waiter was not pleasant at all. I tried smiling and speaking what little German I know, but he seemed like he didn't want to deal with an American tourist. It felt like eat your food and get out... I had high hopes, but better food, ambience and service should be found elsewhere.

Yelp
I organized a meeting with 8 people during a recent convention and the staff was just amazing. Everything was set up and ready for us and even though my party was late the restaurant did nothing to try to hurry us and worked with me to make the meeting a great success! The food was superb! We enjoyed white asparagus, white asparagus soup, the earth and sky dish with blood sausage and yummy apple flavored potatoes, and of course the delicious pig knuckle dishes. Beer outstanding. Highly recommend!

Yelp
A pleasant looking beer hall/restaurant (I like the ship theme) serving Frankenheim Alt, which had a rather interesting flavour. Nice place all in all despite the fact that at 2,10 for a dram (which is all you get in this part of the world) it was one of the most expensive beers we encountered on our trip. And I was slightly short measured! And then they tried to remove my glass with still a drop or two left! not small as the name suggest. It actually seats over 400!

Yelp
Rude waiter! No matter how famous or delicious this restaurant is, its bad service deserves only one star. Before we sit, we wait for the waiter cleaning the table. But he just took away all disks and left all food debris on table. When I ask him to clean it(could you please clean the table?) He just flip away the debris using his fingers and some debris even flew onto my pants. After that, he continued placing all the utensils on the oily and dirty table. We just left after seeing all this. Just do not go there if you do not want to ruin your trip. BTW, their food is more expensive than others. Just think twice about the price and their Napoleon's hype.

Yelp
We were here at the start of carnival. They'd only allow people in for dinner which was nice because all the other places were packed with party people! We had the sausage plate and schnitzel, both we're delicious! We finished of with apfel strudel, delicious!

Yelp
Ancient Brewery/restaurant with scrubbed wooden tables and rustic artifacts. Good, solid portions of of local fare served here. Menu items include German specialties like wursts, sauerbraten, schnitzels, knuckle of pork with bratkartofflen, and an emphasis on seasonal specialties like asparagus Drink Dusseldorfs local ALT Beer her it really goes better with the food than any wine. I couldn't eat here evry night but I love it all the same.

Yelp
Everything I'd hoped for in this classic German restaurant. We sat under the bust of Napolean , ate schnitzel and pork knuckle and drank great alt bier. The "knuckle" was more like a giant chop and big enough for 2.
google avatar

Supakij K.

Yelp
Authentic and oldest German restaurant in Town. Taste good and big portion. Be careful if you come alone. You may not possible to finish your plate. Good german beer!

Yelp
This place is really good. Apparently at one time Napoleon are here and so did Heinrich Heine. The Wiener schnitzel was really good. The atmosphere is great. We sat outside because it was cooler. You can expect sub par service like most places in Germany but it's not that bad.
google avatar

Matthew G.

Yelp
Basic German food. A bit gamy for my taste. Although it was jammed packed with locals eating . Their favorite seemed to be the boiled pork shoulder.

Doug D.

Yelp
Lots of fun and very accommodating to groups (within reason). Food was great and the wait staff was helpful in identifying House favorites vs tourist favorites.
google avatar

Pablo S.

Yelp
Very good time here. Ambience is great - service was actually very good despite reading some of the reviews. Menus have English descriptions which helps. Food was good. Not overly impressed but very solid. Highly Recommend the sausage plate with sauerkraut. Wiener schnitzel was average.

Yelp
Great place for business. Service was very good and the staff was attentive to our every request. Food is ok but not as good at the ambiance and service. You can sit were Napoleon sat on his way to Russia. Guess that didn't work out so well.

Michael K.

Yelp
There's a reason why a place survives 385+ years... this is not only a great place to have a great authentic German meal, schnapps & beer; it's history!
