We decided to visit Zum Sternla based on the good reviews and traditional German menu. The place was very busy (13:30). As we entered the place, we asked if there's a free table for 2. One of the waitresses answered, that there's one in the room at the end of the corridor. We followed the direction, found the room, and the free table (the only one without guests and no "reserved" sign). We were waiting for the waitress to give us the menu, but none approached, as they were busy bringing the orders. After several minutes of waiting I waved to one of the waitresses when our eyes met. :) And she told us that the table is reserved... When I pointed out that there is no sign, unlike on 2 other tables, she said, that the table next to our table has a sign, and there are 2 tables reserved with that sign. Fortunately, there were people leaving, so we were offered to sit at the shared table (our tablemates were great!). We finally got the menu (unfortunately, I didn't find the famous Bamberg Rauchbier we wanted to try, and there was no apple cider either), and ordered 3 sausages with sauerkraut and roasted potatoes for my father (14.5€), and 2 sausages with sauerkraut and bread for me (9.5€). Our order was ready in 20 minutes, which is ok, taking into account the number of guests at Zum Sternla. Also, I was able to go and wash my hands before the meal was served. We were extremely hungry and I remembered about taking photos halfway through our meal. :D The sauerkraut was magnificent. 🔥 The best sauerkraut I ate during the current 16-day trip in Germany. The bread was great, as always in Germany. ❤️ The amount of bread was also good, I was able to share it with my father who absolutely loves German bread. The sausages were not for my taste (I didn't like some of the spices added to the meat), but my father liked them very much! The roasted potatoes were great, I need to thank the people who mentioned them in their reviews. 😘 We asked for the bill, and mentioned that we want to pay in cash. The waitress typed the amount - 24€, and I asked to add the tip to it. But then we were looking at each other rather confused - turns out she was waiting for my card. I clarified, that I was going to pay in cash, and the misunderstanding was settled. I paid the bill, but didn't get any check (which is a bit unfortunate, as it helps to calculate the travel expenses). Overall, we liked the food in Brauhaus Zum Sternla, but it was too crowded and loud per our taste, plus the inattentive service. UPDATED: Check the replies to the 4 and lower star reviews before visiting.

I will return to Bamberg just for the beer and bratwurst. Staff are sweet. The local dishes are awesome and the beer is god tier nectar. 10/10

After 2 weeks traveling through the Rhine Valley and Bavaria (and eating at 1-2 new German restaurant everyday) I now understand why this place is constantly packed. They serve the best versions of all the things you see on every menu. The liverwurst, bratwurst, dumplings, etc. all amazing. I still dream about their fried potatoes. Never had such creamy potatoes… how do they do it? Sigh. It’s too busy for staff to go above and beyond service wise but every one was friendly in this well oiled machine. Prices fair and can’t beat the history too!

If you love real beer, Brauhaus Zum Sternla is a gem in Bamberg 🍺. Their brews are clean, well-balanced and full of character – you can clearly taste the quality malt backbone, the gentle noble hops and the freshness of unfiltered lager. Each variety has its own personality, from the smooth Helles to the richer Märzen and the cloudy Zwickel. The atmosphere is lively and very typical Franconian, exactly the kind of place where beer tastes even better. Staff are super attentive and welcoming, which makes the whole experience unforgettable. A true must-visit if you want to discover authentic Bamberg brewing culture. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The newest brewery in Bamberg, to a city that has been making beer for over 900 yrs was amazing. This local restaurant is in the downtown area had opening seating that we shared, a European tradition. We enjoyed local cuisine that was authentically delicious. 1 Bratwurst with saurkraut and cooked potatoes was delicious. The beer was enjoyable. A fun filled atmosphere with friendly hosts made our evening out perfect on our Gernsn vacation.

I had left Lausanne at 4 a.m. the last Thursday of August 2024 and it was now noon and I was close to Bamberg driving north towards Berlin. It was time for lunch and I looked for some authentic eatery in town consulting maps. The city attracts a lot of tourists so there are the usual pizza and kebab places to avoid at all cost. But could you find a more authentic place than Zum Sternla, that served its first guests in 1380 and has still not been forced out of business? In addition they had their summer brew of lager that rapidly was placed in front of me by my pleasant and fun waitress. I opted for the cumin sausages on a bed of Sauerkraut and accompanied by pan fried potatoes, a classic German choice. It was just what I needed. You sit in their beer garden at large tables so you can easily find new people to speak to if you want. That Thursday it was 36.5 degrees in the shade so people drank a lot of the local beer. Excellent value for money. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Solide Brauhaus-Adresse in Bamberg!

Yelp
After spending a day in Nuremberg, Bamberg was a breath of fresh air, and this restaurant was the pinnacle of that! Compared to the touristy places in Nuremberg, Zum Sternla far exceeds them. Upon walking in, the host couldn't speak English, which was the first sign we had found a good place. We got schnitzel which was pretty good, not the best, and their famous smoked beer which was very good! The waiters that could speak English were very helpful in navigating the menu. There is indoor seating, but the weather was nice so we ate outside on their very comfortable patio.

Yelp
Quick Yelp search after arriving to Bamberg in a famished state led us to this establishment. It is pretty close to the Altstadt so this spot is perfect if you're looking to go somewhere in the area. It seems that during the winter there is no outdoor seating (you can still access the outdoor patio though), and indoor seating is pretty tight. Nonetheless, it creates these cozy nooks for a genuine 1300s throwback Gasthaus ambiance. The waitress was helpful and quick. From the many choices of beer, we chose the Schenkerla smoke beer. With that we ordered the roasted pork shoulder and schnitzel. The meals were superb. We havent had any German/Bayerisch cuisine in a while, and the food were the perfect comeback dishes. Meats were super tender and not too oily. The kartolfelsalat and knodel garnishments were great and not too starchy. Awesome spot, and would venture to say that it beats Tucherhaus and Hofbrauhaus. Would definitely dine here again.

Yelp
Good beer but service was horrible. Took 30 minutes to get a beer order in and couldn't order food at the same time. Another 20 minutes for the beer to arrive then we were permitted to order. Another 45 minutes for a half chicken and wurst salad to arrive. Confusing, because the couple next to us had beers in 10 minutes and food, including schnitzel in 10 more minutes. Wurst salad not worth 7.50 euro at all. Portion was good but wurst was way too fatty. The chicken was tasty but for a small portion of half chicken for 7.50, it was too pricey. Been here in the past and something has changed... and not for the better. Likely to now go to a different place.

Yelp
I've been eating here since I was stationed here in 1990! It is still the best example of the traditional 'gasthaus' experience that I know of. You can feel the love that goes into each dish. I had their special plate on a cast iron skillet, two differently prepared pork steaks, choice of two wursts with fries (or Spätzle) and peas & carrots! The night before I deployed to Iraq I ate my last meal (at least of real food for a while) and anyone who had said that the "German people are cold" was not there that night or the night I got home 5 months later. The manager cried and ran into my arms telling me she had been praying for me, maybe that's what got me home! She just kept the food coming and would not give me the bill. You will not regret eating here!

Yelp
Awesome Rauchbier, loved the freedom of being able to hang outside drinking our street bier, what an awesome setting! Live Bamberg!

Yelp
Great place. Went here back in 2001 and love to come back every chance we get. Authentic Bamberger eating experience. Menu is in traditional Bamberger language and standard german under to help understand what your ordering. You can eat inside or during summer months you can eat out back. If you see a table is reserved ask the staff an they usually can find you a place. Bambergers are normally friendly and can share quite a few stories.

Yelp
This is the oldest restaurant in Bamberg and dates back to 1380! A great place for authentic Bavarian and Franken food. I recommend the Schweinencrustenbaten - Belly of pork with crackling served with a Knodel (dumpling) and the best Sauerkraut I have ever had! Wash it down with a large glass of 'Keller Beer' or Dunkeles! Service is a bit slow and some of the dishes were off the menu by the time we arrived. This suggests that the chef does not quite have a handle on the numbers he can expect and how many ingredients he should get in each day. It is very reasonable in price with a nice Beer Garden at the rear. A nice place to while away a few hours drinking good beer and eating authentic no frills German Food. Full of flavor and calories! Did I mention the Sauerkraut is the best I have ever tasted!? Even better than my own efforts to make this dish. Don't bother with the cheese board on the menu. We were expecting a selection of local cheeses and all we got was some dodgy looking Camembert, Emmental and Cream Cheese from the supermarket up the road. Try the Bratwurst! Excellent!!

Yelp
We had drinks here late at night - there is a cute little courtyard patio outside here.

Yelp
1 star only because you can't give 0. The host simply said none for you. We ate at 2 star Atelier in Munich the night before and came to Bamberg in part to eat here. I know Germans have a firmness to them but this was outright rude. We ate at Hofbrau and it was delicious.
