On the Grid : Breadfern

"With a genius name like Breadfern, you'd expect it to be good, right? And thankfully it doesn't fail to deliver. They do all your bakery favs and more, plus a decent coffee. The chirpy staff and funky fit-out give make the space feel warm and inviting. Most of the benches and shelving are from recycled timber and you can either sit and chill on the seats outside or takeaway and enjoy some people watching in the park across the street. Hot tip: if you're craving something of the pastry variety, make sure you get in early as most of the good stuff is out the door by 1pm." - lowercase

Get their slow cooked beef pie if you want savoury. Get the banoffee pie if you want sweet. Get the blueberry vanilla tart or strawberry matcha flan if you want sweet but not too sweet.

I came here as part of my bakery hopping journey and I was blown away. They offer one of the most impressive French bakery selections I’ve seen — everything from sweet to savoury, and all done to perfection. I tried the spinach & ricotta roll (so flaky and well-seasoned), the slow cooked beef pie (rich and hearty), and a beautiful variety of sweets including raspberry mascarpone, coffee ganache tart, fruit brioche, and a soft chocolate raisin pain suisse. Their egg tart was also smooth and silky, and I washed it all down with a refreshing healthy juice. Highly recommend if you’re in the area!

This place is a bit hipster/too trendy but it’s one of the few places I’ve found that seem to make Gluten Free bread in house. It’s never on the rack, you have to ask for it from the counter as it seems to come from the fridge wrapped in cling wrap (I suspect to keep it from contaminants). It tastes as though it’s from a potato base so not too strong in the flavour which is how I like it so I can taste what I put on the bread. And not too sweet like a lot of the brands from the shelf can be!

Best Tart I had in Sydney, specially their Banoffee Tart, luscious and just perfect sweetness. Coffee and pastries are delicious and beautiful as well. Staff were amazing and friendly. Added to one of my fave cafes. Thank you Breadfern Bakery.

Craving pastry for the breakfast, went to Breadfern in the morning to try some of their stuff. Ordered Pistachio & Orange Blossom Tarte, Peanut butter & Raspberry Jam Snail, Slow cooked beef pie and Iced long black for the drink. Peanut butter & Raspberry Jam Snail was the best, worth the trip from our place in North Sydney. Really recommended it!! Pistachio & Orange Blossom Tarte was good but didn’t really has Pistachio flavour. Beef pie was ok. Didn’t expected anything from the iced long black but it turned out pretty good.

A pastry heaven for all pastry lovers! 🥐With so many options to choose from, it’s a must-visit in Redfern. 🤩Not only are their pastries amazing, but their tarts are also next level, surprisingly not too sweet, just perfectly balanced. 🥨We tried the Blueberry 🫐 Vanilla Yogurt and Pistachio Orange 🍊 Blossom, both absolutely delicious. Their seasonal Rhubarb & Raspberry 🍓Puff is another standout, with that raspberry cream filling taking it to the next level. 🤤The perfect spot for a weekend treat or a quick pick-me-up! ✨

We came all the way from the Central Coast NSW to try out their stuff. We had the pure butter croissants, chocolate croissants, almond croissants, cinnamon bun, lemon meringue tart, raisin and chocolate snail, dark rye sourdough, fruit & nuts on sourdough and cappuccinos. Yes, a lot for only four people and yes great! Recommended.

Went on a Sunday at 11:30, was a bit of a line but still got a table. I got a strawberry and matcha croissant and it was one of the best pastries I have EVER had. perfectly flaky, not too sweet, with such a beautiful and strong flavor. Wow. Coffee was kind of whatever but the pastry was so good I'll still give this place 5 stars 😂

Yelp
Rude staff. They lied about prices. I accidentally gave an extra dollar and they tried acting like that was the actual price. Disappointed...

Yelp
Excellent little cafe for all occasions. They are a bakery and make yummy little savoury pastries, bread and dessert/sweet pastries. Prices are reasonable too - mushroom/potato pastry for $3.50 but you might need 3-4 to fill u up for lunch. My favourite is the chorizo & potato pie for $5.50 - generous portions of chorizo in there! The hubs loves the almost croissant, which is just fragrant and nutty, not too sweet like many we've tasted! Think it was $4.50 each. Coffees are great too, served efficiently and with a smile :)

Yelp
First bakery review in Australia, exciting (for me, as I am writing, you might not care at all actually). The bakery looks nice and I really liked two things. Firstly, you can see a person actually baking a few meters away, behind the cashier's counter, and it's always cool to watch. Secondly, even though it is nice to see all sorts of breads all over the place, there wasn't a massive and abundant display of goods and it made me feel like most of what's there will finish in someone's stomach and not in a bin. I like no waste people! Now to the main attraction! I didn't buy any bread, so by that I meant cake. Cake is cooler than bread anyway. Don't argue (jeez first you weren't excited for the first review thing, now you are arguing with me, how uncool). It was a chocolate sponge cake with pears & dark chocolate decoration - photo in my check-in - and unfortunately it was average and kinda showered my enthusiasm: the sponge was too dry, the pears not juicy enough, the chocolate had a nice crunchy texture that would have contrasted beautifully with the sponge and the juicy pears but was not dark enough. I will give it a second chance, a second review, and hopefully the cake was a one off. Because the staff was nice and the place interesting! Who knows, they might even have duck fat in their sandwiches ;-)

Yelp
Bread heaven for bread lovers. Dropped in after a workout session and boy did I want to eat everything at the counter. Ordered the savoury scroll and coffee - polished it in 5 minutes. Took home more of the savoury rolls; Apple cinnamon Danish and a loaf of sourdough - should last me couple days. And I'm sure I'll be back for more and soon..!

Yelp
Very disappointing meatpies and croissants. Ordered the beef pie, and most of the crust/pastry was too hard or inedible. The pie was filled with potatoe mash and little meat with little of any flavor. The chocolate almond croissant we ordered had no chocolate and was filled with desiccated coconut instead. Highly unsatisfactory experience. Wish they would not cut corners and go beyond making the food look appealing.

Yelp
Stopped by the recently opened Breadfern on the way home and had the banana scone - seriously tasty. Will be back to try some of the other treats. You can get sourdough bread here too!
