Mechelen Is Like a Mini Bruges Without the Crowds — Here’s How to Visit Belgium's Best-kept Secret

"Next destination: Het Anker brewery, one of Belgium’s most storied brewers. ... David decided to take the full 90-minute brewery tour ... while Anne and I wandered some more, catching up. ... Eventually we made our way back to Het Anker to meet up with David and Anne’s partner — and, finally, some beer tasting. I sampled the 'Belgian Flag,' 5-ounce pours of three varieties of Gouden Carolus that represented the flag’s colors: dark Classic, golden Tripel, and reddish Ambrio." - Barbara Noe Kennedy

We recently stayed at Brewery Het Anker and loved our visit. Situated in an interesting corner of a lovely, medieval city, the brewery is well-situated for a walking tour. Rooms are clean, comfortable, well-appointed and very quiet. We had dinner at the brewery, which was delicious. Service was great even though they were extremely busy. Breakfast the next morning was very varied, with muesli, waffles, breads, ham, cheese and fresh fruits among others on offer. Highly recommend!

During our holidays in Bruges, we drove 1 hour to visit the brewery, following a warm recommendation from friends who had visited it in the past. We arrived with great appetite, but what awaited us there turned out to be one of the most unpleasant surprises we’ve ever had. As soon as we sat down, the waiter informed us that there is a rule stating that we can order a maximum of 4 items from the menu!!! And this regardless of how many people we are!! So, a group of 7 people would be limited to only 4 dishes. The explanation we were given is laughable – supposedly, because of the crowd, it is more convenient for the kitchen to serve up to 4 items per group!! Sorry, but there are much larger restaurants that can easily serve all groups without such rules. It should also be noted that this rule was not written anywhere, neither on the restaurant’s website nor was it mentioned when we made the reservation. We have visited dozens of restaurants both in our country and abroad, and honestly, this is the first time we have ever encountered such a situation. We are aware of restaurants with a minimum consumption requirement, but a maximum consumption? That’s a first!!! As a result, our mood was ruined, we ordered a few dishes but of course remained hungry, and eventually ended up at the McDonald’s across from the brewery to actually fill up!! Therefore, 1 star as a lenient rating (I wish there was an option for 0), and a piece of advice to future visitors: only go to the brewery if your group has a maximum of 4 people – otherwise you will leave hungry.

Cool brewery. It was great to learn so much about the brewing process and the history during the tour. We also got to know about the whiskey and tried it. At the end we had great beer. And after I have bought drinks for all the man in my family cause they really love those products. Also the tour guide was very friendly and funny, and was answering all the questions we had. Great experience.

I recently visited the Brewery for a tour and tasting. It was very fun, I loved listening to the history of the brewery and learning about how beer is made. Our guide was great, the whiskey was a bit too much for my taste, but the beer and creamy liquor were amazing! The gift is also much appreciated!

Easy access with a car, though 15 euros seemed pricey for parking. Room was nice, clean, and comfortable. Short walk to town center. Interesting being part of a brewery - which had excellent brews by the way. The breakfast was served in the brewery restaurant and was excellent. Good choice for an intriguing town.

We did a brewery tour including tasting and had drinks and dinner after. Great experience, very good beer although it's impossible to taste them all without getting wasted. The food was not that great but not bad either. The whole experience was excellent! Great with friends or family (leave kids at home).

This is a review of the Brasserie and not the Brewery. We ordered the Flemish Stew, chicory salad, and frites with a local beer. The food was good and the service was friendly and helpful.

Outstanding Food, Exceptional Beer, and the Warmest Service We had dinner at Hey Anker in Mechelen and were absolutely thrilled: deliciously prepared dishes, authentic flavors, and an outstanding selection of beers. I went for the slow-cooked spareribs in a marinade based on Gouden Carolus Whisky Infused – incredibly tender and full of flavor – while my friend enjoyed the Flemish stew made with Gouden Carolus Classic, served with chicory salad, fries and homemade mayonnaise. We finished with a Dame Blanche dessert, perfectly paired with a Gouden Carolus Whisky Infused beer. We loved it so much that we came back the very next day for lunch! This time we had the toast of Gouden Carolus brewer’s bread with smoked salmon and herb cheese, and the goat cheese salad on raisin bread with fried bacon bits, nuts, apples and honey. A special thank you to our delightful waitress Eva, whose kindness, attentiveness, and warm smile made the experience even more memorable. Highly recommended for excellent food, outstanding beer, and impeccable hospitality.

Yelp
Favorite brewery near Brussels! I visit every time I travel there. Go to the restaurant and the gift shop. The Imperial Dark is the best beer, but there are several other delicious varieties! Also makes for great gifts- they have gift boxes and special glasses for each beer.
