Mechelen Is Like a Mini Bruges Without the Crowds — Here’s How to Visit Belgium's Best-kept Secret

"Next destination: Het Anker brewery, one of Belgium’s most storied brewers. ... David decided to take the full 90-minute brewery tour ... while Anne and I wandered some more, catching up. ... Eventually we made our way back to Het Anker to meet up with David and Anne’s partner — and, finally, some beer tasting. I sampled the 'Belgian Flag,' 5-ounce pours of three varieties of Gouden Carolus that represented the flag’s colors: dark Classic, golden Tripel, and reddish Ambrio." - Barbara Noe Kennedy

I did not have a chance to visit the brewery, but we had a nice dinner at the restaurant. They serve traditional Belgian dishes. The beef stew was delicious, and the local beer was awesome. There are also vegetarian options. Highly recommended.

Really enjoyed the 1.5 hour tour of the brewery. We had an excellent multi-lingual guide who really knew her subject and how to deliver it clearly, informatively and with good humour too. It was great to learn about the history of the brewery and the brewing process. The interesting tour of the building included taking in the views from the rooftop of Mechelen and culminated in tasting the wonderful beers. Well worth considering if you are in the area.

We were able to walk-in and join a tour so that was great for our time-limited day trip in Antwerp. The tour was a bit long because of the translation (the tour guide spoke Dutch & English). However, the experience after made up for it! Great value for the $ with the beer tasting and souvenirs.

I thoroughly recommend the brewery tour. Historical, educational and entertaining in equal measure! Great host and excellent beer tasting!

We only visited the restaurant (food was mediocre, but with attentive service) and then went for the brewery tour. This was very informative with nice tasting afterwards.

The brewery tour was the best one I've ever done! The tour was informative and interesting. It was also easy to hear what the tour guide was saying (no background noise or not too many people on the tour). This tour was great value for the money, and I can definitely recommend!

Great quality to price beer tour. Includes both the tour and sampling of 2 of their top beers (tripel + infused stout), as well as a bit of whiskey. As a cherry on top, you can collect a free tripel beer glass from their shop. Money well spent! The only disadvantage is that even the non-Dutch language tours are mostly in Dutch, with merely brief (but to the point) explanations in English. Can't blame the tour guide (he's a lovely passionate guy), since I felt the group itself did not have much patience for English language.

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay here! The rooms are nice and perfect for a brewery. The food at the restaurant is delicious and the beers are amazing!

Yelp
Favorite brewery near Brussels! I visit every time I travel there. Go to the restaurant and the gift shop. The Imperial Dark is the best beer, but there are several other delicious varieties! Also makes for great gifts- they have gift boxes and special glasses for each beer.
