Brauerei Ferdinand Schumacher - SilverKris

"A traditional German-style brewhouse best known for its signature Altbier — the oldest altbier in Düsseldorf — which is brewed from a special malt mixture according to a family recipe maintained for over 175 years. The distinctive malt blend and long-standing brewing tradition give the beer its characteristic flavor, and it remains the most popular item on the menu with both locals and tourists." - SilverKris

Love this place! Even though we only make it here once a year, it’s always a fun highlight. The Altbier is excellent, and the sausage plate is a classic. The cheese plate is also very interesting. A must-visit in Düsseldorf!

Google
The only Altbier brewhouse I hadn’t visited so far in Düsseldorf was Schumacher. Yesterday, after a two-year absence from my home city, I passed by it by accident late at night and stepped in. I had already eaten lunch, so I didn’t try the food, but the menu looks very good. When I checked the founding date, I realised that Schumacher, established in 1838, is actually the oldest brewhouse in town. After the first Alt, I remembered Killepitsch and ordered one with the next beer — always a great choice in Düsseldorf. I ended up having a great chat with the Köbes about life, kids, and how cool Düsseldorf really is.

This is a traditional local food restaurant. It is a brewery with traditional German food. Overall, food was great, the alt beer provide good bitter taste, great atmosphere of the environment, good and friendly service from the waiter. if you want to experience the local food, I will definitely recommend it

I was stuck at the entrance because Kelluner was busy and they probably didn’t notice me. They walked past me several times but they still didn’t notice me, so I tried to get their attention, and they finally showed me to my seat :| They have several free seats, but more and more people are coming because it’s a popular restaurant. In fact, I wasn’t feeling well at the time, but I forgot to put my coaster on top of my glass, so they brought me another beer! 😂 I ordered “sausage specialties with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.” They were really tasty, but I’m not sure what the black round thing on my plate was. It felt kind of like potato. I asked my German friend about it, but he didn’t know either 😂

Google
Had an awesome experience here! The beer was tasty and a bit different than what I'm used to. The weinersnitchel was amazing! It was absolutely delicious and the portions were very good. Prices were reasonable also. The environment here is really cool. Gives you local and traditional vibes. Really glad we stopped here to get a drink and some really good food. Definitely recommend!

Google
Recommended by a worker in the Radstation, this was an enjoyable evening. We got an inside table within 5 minutes despite it being very busy. Our waiter was good (30+ years service, and he shared his secret for long life with us), keeping an eye on when we’d finished our beers and adding the tally to the beermat, and trying to engage us in chit-chat (although our German was not really up to it). The atmosphere was lively but all generated by just conversation- a loud buzz of humanity. People were simply enjoying being there. The food was tasty if very light on green vegetables, but the meats were all good quality and with delicious sauces. Thanks for the recommendation.

Google
Lovely old brewery. Beer was perfect and very moreish. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was delicious - the mash was superb, as was the strudel. Deserves a better rating.

Google
Great for classic German food. Cosy atmosphere, although very busy. Our waiter was incredibly competent. Seriously impressive given the Christmas rush.

Yelp
Traditional German Brew Haus The atmosphere was great. My server was very accommodating allowing me to feel that I had my own STAMMTISCH Enjoyed the fact that this location was close to my hotel and the rail station rather than near all the craziness of Aldstadt

Yelp
Great local place in Dusseldorf Germany, very traditional beer house. Some of the dishes are traditional like pork knuckles with cabbage and potatoes. They also have steak and other delicious dished. The place has been here for a long time, definitely give it a try while you are in the area. Nela

Yelp
Very traditional German brew House restaurant. The service was super efficient. Food was good. Top 1 or 2 altbier in town.

Yelp
Boisterous, crowded, and only one beer selection, theirs. Everything a good German beer hall should be! Schumacher is very popular, so either get there early or have reservations. Seating is communal, so get ready to share your table and make new acquaintances. The server comes to your table and simply asks if you want beer. Say yes and you get a small glass filled from a large pitcher. He marks your coaster every time you get a refill. The beer is good! The food is standard hearty German dishes. I had a Chicken Schnitzel blanketed in Raclette cheese. Simple and wonderful. My wife had the Pork Schnitzel in Paprika Sauce. Same result. On a chilly, wet night, this was perfection!

Yelp
Great German food and beer While waiting, enjoy the beer - a waiter will come by and give you a coaster - that's how they keep track of how many you have. They are pretty good about bringing new beers by when you are done with what you have Got the following: Pork knuckle with sausages, sides of mashed potatoes and sauerkraut: so good! Amazing mashed potatoes and they got the skin on the pork super crispy with tender meat on the inside. Would definitely eat here and order this again!

Kyle S.

Yelp
Fantastic place. German food/beer hall well worth the visit. Great beer and quick service with the small glasses. Loads of grilled meat and traditional German sides. Fantastic environment. I'll be back.

Yelp
My beer had a wasp fly into it. They wouldn't replace it and made me pay for another. Ridiculous. They even said it's my fault. I will never go here again.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Great flavors, authentic German ambience, servers were wonderful and the beer is fantastic! We had a family of 14 and loved it.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Out first restaurant in Germany. This was amazing. Beer was awesome; only serve 1; their Altbier. Oldest brewery in the city. The schnitzel was awesome along with the pork knuckle. A must visit if in Dusseldorf!!
google avatar

Veronique C.

Yelp
Perfect if you are looking for a traditional German style brewery as it's one of the oldest. We only had beers with bread and Gouda, since it was too early for us to have dinner there, but we loved the atmosphere and the beer. The Schumacher Alt's beautiful amber color comes from a special malt mixture, and it's nice to know they still make it the same way they did back when they started in the 1800s. And if you need another reason to visit Brauerei Schumacher, this brewery has been run by women for the last 50 years!

Yelp
This place was not that far from our Hotel Me and All Düsseldorf. Quick walk and open most of the day. Schnitzel was spot on and service was good. If you're in the area definitely a good spot for food and authentic atmosphere

Yelp
I stopped in here on my last day of a weeklong Germany tour in the middle of a heatwave. I was very thirsty and "complained" to the nice German gentleman sitting across from me that the glass was too small. In full view of Napoleon, he dressed me down and explained in detail how it was perfect, over a period of 15 minutes and at least three more beers. He said to just keep up the pace.

Yelp
Our first meal after landing in Dusseldorf - we wanted to try our German cuisine and found this place on TripAdvisor. They had great reviews and pictures looked great. It's a huge restaurant and only a couple servers so I see them working hard. The bf got a house beer and I got a healthy pour of wine. The menus are not in English and there are no pictures. To order, we just scrolled through the pictures on our phones and pointed to what we want. 1st dish - in Spanish it's called codillo which is this big piece of meat with really crispy skin. The meat was very tender but I felt like it lacked taste. The mash potatoes and sauerkraut were delicious. 2nd entree - looks like a burger patty. Now this was absolutely amazing and flavorful. Scalloped potato and creamy vegetables were great too. They accept credit cards!

Elaine F.

Yelp
We were visiting Düsseldorf on a family vacation and ate here with a local friend on the first night. We got a nice table outside and enjoyed great service. The beer selection was great and the menu had excellent local fare. Highly recommend
google avatar

Kelvin C.

Yelp
The alt-bier here is not their best beer here. That crown definitely goes to their 1838er. It's refreshing and citrisy with a nice hoppy finish. Amazing. They advertise the 1838 as a seasonal beer but I wonder if they have it year round. Do let your waiter know you want the 1838 or they'll bring you an Alt-bier by default.
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
Very traditional brewery setting with great Altbier and German dishes. Good place to try food like Mett that is local to the area. They only take cash so go prepared.
google avatar

Kim R.

Yelp
I have to eat here every time I visit Dusseldorf and it never disappoints. The servers are friendly and helpful and very attentive. And the Alt bier is the best! My go to is the Eisbein roasted. with the fried potatoes but their schnitzel is good, too. This is a must for anyone visiting and locals, alike.
google avatar

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Quaint historic pub with their own long-established brewery. Dark interior and a menu of traditional German favorites that have become a rare offering in larger German cities. Probably the only one of its kind still in existence in that area of Düsseldorf. If you're in Düsseldorf and looking for a somewhat traditional German pub experience, this is likely good fit for you and your group.
google avatar

Stefano C.

Yelp
Nice typical German place, the food was really good. Maybe a bit over the average but it worth it. A plus point to the crew who was really nice and kind. I definitely recommend it to who will want to have a nice German experience.
google avatar

Isabelle K.

Yelp
It looks like it's a chain. It has the same brewery in Altstadt. The waiter won't let us keep the table because we only wanted to drink, not dinner. Table is only for people who will order dinner. So we left in 10 mins.
google avatar

Chris I.

Yelp
A must when in Düsseldorf! Originally, I didn't really care overmuch for the top-fermented dark 'Alt' beer, but it grows on you soon and is a good session ale. This vast establishment has its own brewery on the premises(somewhere?) and seats gazillions of people. There are also cosy side rooms downstairs and upstairs and - as is par for the course in Ddf - you will never, ever, have to wait long for a glass of Alt to be placed in front of you. So far, I have always stuck to eating their 'Schlachtplatte' (ham and German sausage made with meat from freshly slaughtered pigs and served with sauerkraut). You will not leave hungry and be adequately fortified for moving on to the Altstadt. I fully agree with what Mariele says in terms of comparing it with other establisments.
google avatar

Ward M.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, feels authentic, not that I would know. Extremely busy. They only really have two beers here which makes for quick and automatic refilling of it. Food was very good, but not a whole lot of it for the price.
google avatar

Jari S.

Yelp
I was hoping a nice and good bierhaus experience but had to disapoint. Arrogant and unpleasant service. They were arrogant even to local customers. Strong request for a personel field trip to Cologne in their kölsch restaurants and service culture. This was the first time in Germany when I had such bad service in restaurant.
google avatar

Piet D.

Yelp
Probably the best beer in town! Service can be a little rough, but it's part of the show, so don't be offended. Had a great meal there! Make sure to try the "Haxe" and their special 1838 beer!
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
A decent looking place in the modern, less attractive part of Dusseldorf. Their standard Alt was below average compared to others we enjoyed that day, however their 1838 was absolutely delicious. Made with the wonderful Cascade hop..they should make this all the time, they really should (it was some kind of limited edition). It was runner up for my best beer of the entire German trip Charges for the toilets! Bad idea Jungs!
google avatar

Supakij K.

Yelp
Great alt beer ! Excellent taste of pork knuckle and sausage. Environment are authentic german brewery. Staffs are friendly and helpful for menu selection.
google avatar

Yelp
I can do nothing but support the previous poster. This is MY favorite Düsseldorf Brauhaus. The food is (to my perception) better than in the other places, I like most of the stuff they prepare (which does not include anything connected to Blutwurst) but mainly stick to Bratwurst, Kraut and Altbeer. And this concludes it: Even I do not fancy Altbier very much, Schumacher makes the best type. One hint: Do not go to Schumacher when larger fairs happen in Düsseldorf (unless thats the only time you have got). The taxi drivers know this place and during Drupa and similar, it is packed with Tourists.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
This brewery was last on our stop. Farthest from the main Alt area. There is a busy road in front of the brewery, so scenery was not as fun and exciting as the others we stopped at. Inside tables were nice and excellent swift service.

Robert C.

Yelp
The best schweinehaxe can be found here. The interior is very german and the service good.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Four of us enjoyed an epic meal called Schumachers Hausbrett for 4 - with five flavors of meat (two types of sausage, pork chips, ham hock and leg of lamb). Sauerkraut and two kinds of potatoes! Totally recommended if you're in the mood for meat. Prices quite reasonable, especially since we drank as much beer as we could in the process.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
Awesome brew house in Dusseldorf! Serving authentic german dishes and amazing Dusseldorf style altbier! The pork knuckles are sooo good! Crispy pork skin and tender chunks of meat...drool! After all the meat and altbier close out the meal with an apple strudel and a killepitsch!

Yelp
Went on Saturday evening at around 830pm. First thing I liked about this place was their signature alt beer was just immediately brought to our table, without us asking them yet. The server probably already knew we came there to drink :) our service was very very nice and welcoming. We ordered the platter that includes pork knuckle, which 3 of us shared. It was yummy, the sausages it came with was delicious. It also came with mash potatoes and sauerkraut. We also got I think about 4 or 5 small glass of beer, which continuously kept coming.
google avatar

V B.

Yelp
Right alt beer with no complains... Solid service. Didn't try food-kept it for next visit. Always wanted to come but always stayed on the other side of city. Lucky today my train is late and I have time to hang around.

Chris T.

Yelp
When it came time to pay and I presented my credit card for the €29 bill, I was told I could only use my credit card for €50 or more. They ended up charging me €50 for my €29 meal, which I find rather ridiculous. On top of that, the waiter had a bad attitude about the whole situation. Worst restaurant experience I can remember.
google avatar

Ada C.

Yelp
Such a nice place with a big beer garden in the back! Definitely come for an altbier. They are €2 a pop.

Erik H.

Yelp
The Altbier here is the best. After living here ages ago, I hit the Altstadt version of this a few years back, and made sure my hotel was stumbling distance away. No way I was putting the coaster on my glass (the method to stop them from bringing you another glass of Alt!) Oh how I miss you so...
google avatar

Rachel F.

Yelp
Well, it's the oldest Brauerei in Düsseldorf, so it has lots of character. But the food was merely decent - nothing outstanding, just standard brauhaus fare. And the service was a bit on the distracted side (bordering on rude). If we head back to Düsseldorf, we won't go there again.
google avatar

Mariele M.

Yelp
The most beautiful Brauhaus of Duesseldorf. The food is very good, little more sophisticated than in the Altstadt Brewerys. For its peripheral location ther are far less tourists. The Schumacher Alt is very drinkable.

Yannis K.

Yelp
I arrived at the restaurant on 06.07.20 at 20:40 for dinner, received by the host, filled out the COVID form and was led to a table at 20:45. As soon as I took my seat, I noticed that the table surface hadn't been cleaned from the previous guests (oily stains on the surface). When the waiter came, I politely suggested the table be cleaned as it was evidently oily (after all we live in a COVID era). He became irritated and in a loud voice said "why don't you sit somewhere else". I told him that's where the host led me to sit. He came back with a wet towel, wiped the table and the Menu. Twenty four min later, no one had attended to me. At the table across, another waiter was repeatedly socialising with his guests, at prolonged intervals as the restaurant was barely half full. As soon as I stood up, the waiter appeared and said "you are leaving?". "After 24 min waiting I don't think anyone has the intention to serve me", I answered, It was an absolutely terrible experience with completely ignorant and non service oriented staff. A very bad experience and an evening without food. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID, there are other restaurants in Dusseldorf less known but honest and correct in their staff manners.

Tina M.

Yelp
An authentic, German experience for your guests complete with the huge portions of Schnitzel and Schweinhaxe, endless glasses of Altbier, and German waiters that treat you like they don't need or want to be tipped (haha)! Food is great and the ambience is a must-experience!

George S.

Yelp
it was my first time at this kind of brewery and I must say, that is the best german beer I ever had. The food was very rich, I had the roasted pork knuckel with mashed potatoes, sauerkraut and gravy, delicous, but enough for 2 my friend had the rheinish souerbraten with sort of potatoe dumplings(knodel) and gravy, also very good the waiters are a little rude, but we were told that they are always like this, it is kind part of the business. They will serve you another alt beer without being asked for unless you put your beermat on top of your glass. they mark all your consumtion on this beermat, so they know exactly what you had. good fun though, but look after your drinking consumtion :)))) I can highly recommend this place to anyone who loves good beer and rich german food

Victor S.

Yelp
Good place. Good traditional German food. Zero sophistication but good quality and very good value for money. Fair prices. Friendly staff. Noisy, dark and old popular atmosphere. Make sure you had nothing for lunch if you go there for dinner since every ration is gigantic and it is a pity to waste good food. Good beers too :)

Christian S.

Yelp
Excellent home-brewed Alt beer. Perhaps the best you can get. Classical German pub atmosphere. Good food.

Rex S.

Yelp
This place was awesome. Was in Dusseldorf for three days and had two of my lunches there. Authentic. Simple. Great beer. Good vibe. Convenient location.
