Everything we tried was delightful, and I can’t quite pinpoint my favourite dish since we enjoyed everything! The warm, freshly baked pretzel was especially enchanting, and the soups were packed with flavour. As for the goulash, the meat was tender and cut like butter. We truly savoured it all. The restaurant is nestled in a peaceful courtyard, creating a wonderful atmosphere. We ended up lingering longer to enjoy additional drinks and fully absorb the ambiance. Our server was an absolute joy; she was friendly and made ordering a breeze. Her warm demeanor definitely kept us there longer. Considering what we had, especially being in the city center, we found everything to be delightful and well-priced. This spot was one of the favourite spots we ate in.

2nd time coming here. Lovely, quiet restaurant to have dinner. The courtyard is in the shade making for a cool place to sit on a hot summer’s day. Ordered 2 veal schnitzels, glass of wine and grape juice. Everything tasted great and was worth it, although the food is on the pricier side. Service was good too!

Google
10/10! Highly highly recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere transports you through time with a beautiful history described in the menu and seen throughout the building (it dates back to the Romans). Delicious warm pretzels, and everything on the menu. Warm friendly staff.

This was my second visit and it did not disappoint! We sat outside until rain forced our group indoors. The food and service were great.

Google
We ordered beef soup and Wiener Schnitzel, the soup was too salty to drink, the taste of the Wiener Schnitzel was so so which I don’t think it worth EUR 28.5 ! The overall experience was unsatisfactory, especially service attitude of the waitress !

Very, very good food. The service was really excellent and the waiter was perfect. We will come again...

After a long stroll through the city center, we found the perfect spot to recharge. The warm pretzels were a comforting treat, paired beautifully with a selection of local wines. To top it off, the apple strudel was simply divine. A cozy and welcoming haven in the heart of Vienna!

Google
This is a wonderful restaurant, tucked away around the corner from the main streets. Every dish we had was delicious and felt home-cooked. The waitress was warm and friendly and she gave us some good recommendations for dishes to try. The warm pretzels were an awesome welcome as well. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Our nephew who had lived in Vienna for a few months recommended this out of the way place in the center of town. We stopped for lunch and grabbed an outdoor table. The inside space looks quite charming but it was too nice to dine in. The one waiter did a decent job keeping up with the growing lunch time crowd. We ordered drinks - a radler and a glass of Austrian wine (both were good). I figured that I better order the Weiner schnitzel since we were in Vienna after all. My wife got a type of goulash complete with a fried egg on top. Both were very good but the schnitzel was a bit dry - I usually like my schnitzels with a sauce. Did I mention it was huge! One nice touch was that instead of bread they served warm soft pretzels. Very tasty. Prices were OK.

Yelp
We walked in for lunch and came back for dinner, if that says anything. The restaurant is very charming and the food is good. The pretzels are great with drinks. The beef soups were nourishing. And the mains were very satisfying, during our two visits we had: deboned fried chicken, blood sausage, veal schnitzel, and venison ragu. The potato salad was also excellent. The decor is made to look really old, which gave the place a nice bit of charm. We were seated upstairs for lunch and downstairs for dinner. I liked upstairs better. Service is typical Viennese, so don't expect to get anything quickly.

Yelp
A very quaint and historic Austrian restaurant with great authentic food in a beautiful setting. A local guide recommended it for us and we arrived at 6:30 on a Thursday without a reservation and were directed to the historic lower level that was cozy and quiet and happily non-smoking. They are noted for their pretzels and Austrian cuisine and we enjoyed both along with a nice bottle of Austrian red wine. Price was only about 70€ and half of that was the wine so we felt like it was a pretty good deal. Service was fine and I really enjoyed the cozy feel of our downstairs table-I could have hung out there for a long time just soaking in the mid-evil atmosphere -a bit dark an illuminated with red candles. My tradition beef with crispy onion strings (could tell you the German name) was first rate as was my wife's tender pork dish (again the German eludes me). Perhaps a bit hard to find but well worth the effort.

Yelp
This place came recommended to me by Yelp and looked like more of a local spot than a touristy place. This restaurant is definitely off the beaten path, kind of hard to find but it's close to Judenplatz museum in a small alleyway. The eatery from the outside doesn't look like much, just a couple tables and umbrellas. When my friend and I visited this place during lunch, it didn't seem to be busy at all. I was looking more for an authentic local Austrian meal than visiting one of the touristy spots in central and that's exactly what this place had. The menu is a huge old looking leather book, even though it's massive looking they really don't have that big of a menu. We started off the meal with some pretzels, which other Yelpers have raved about. They were indeed the real deal, fantastic pretzels, the best I've ever had. They came out soft and warm and had a decent amount of salt on them. They won't bring mustard unless you ask for it, but they went great with a dab of mustard. This would be my first time trying authentic schnitzel. Their breaded schnitzel is made of veal and tastes amazing. The waitress offered to bring some cranberry sauce for dipping, I was very hesitant in trying it, I don't usually like berry sauces. But the combo of schnitzel and cranberry sauce was a transcending experience, I would have never thought a sweet sauce would go so well with a dish like this. It came with a side of potatoes that looked more like slices of pineapple, very yellowish and soft. The potatoes were just okay, not bad, but I was too filled up with pretzels and schnitzel to finish them. My friend got order of apple strudel, which I'm not a fan of. She enjoyed the strudel and really liked the sauce they surrounded it with. The service was excellent, the waitress didn't speak the best English but she was very patient with us and did and did a great job at serving us. The prices were a bit steep, but that's Austria for you, almost everywhere I went here was not cheap at all, the meal came out to around 50 euros or so with drinks. If you're looking for authentic Austria food and a chill quiet atmosphere, this is the place.

Yelp
Cozy, charming cellar restaurant tucked away on a side street serving Austrian specialties at fair prices. My husband and I came here for New Year's Eve dinner and enjoyed flavorful boiled beef soup, grilled pork tenderloin in a green peppercorn sauce (him) and grilled sheep's cheese on arugula (me), accompanied by a zesty Gruner Veltliner white wine. The pretzels in the bread basket were an extra 1.90 euro apiece but were soft and absolutely delicious. For dessert, we had a luscious warm apple strudel. Service was professional and friendly. We felt well looked after but weren't rushed. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This rustic restaurant located off an alley side street. Entering the restaurant felt like walking back in time. The small, darkish interior with antique object curious all over the space. The food was enjoyable. Our server was plenty nice also. We started with pretzels. It came out still warm & soft. Lightly salted. We tried a variety of dishes. The dumpling and eggs were hearty and satisfying. The schnitzel was crispy and thin. I like the accompanying potato side and salad. To finish was the apple strudel in vanilla sauce was a perfect end to the meal. It certainly was plenty off food for 3 people. Brezlgwölb is a cozy walk back in time with hearty homey Viennese food.

Yelp
We had a wonderful dinner in this quaint little historic restaurant in the heart of Vienna. Traditional Viennese menu. We shared the pretzels and a beer along with the grandmas cheese dumplings for the table (request a side of mustard), and then two of us ordered the original Wiener schnitzel with raspberry sauce, which was very good. The apple streusel with vanilla sauce is a must. The whole vibe with the place was wonderful. Listening to classical Mozart being played with this quirky historic interior. Very nice weight staff who didn't rush us. Highly recommended for anyone staying in Vienna.

Yelp
A Viennese friend took me here because I requested to eat "typical Viennese" for dinner, and I wanted to go to a place without any tourists. I was probably the only Asian inside the place for the night, so that must confirm its authenticity. The menu is a large book with handwritten entries for each item. We had the Viennese beef broth, and Tafelspitz (boiled beef), and stuffed pancakes for dessert. The broth was perfect, with just enough salted, and what I suspect is the liquid used to boil the Tafelspitz. Yum! The Tafelspitz was very, very tender, with apple sauce on the side. Really delicious. The stuffed pancakes were sweet and freshly made - could not have asked for more. Delish.

Yelp
The great reviews did not lie! This was an awesome last dinner in Vienna at the end of our week-long visit. We found the restaurant pretty easily using Google Maps and were able to sit outside and enjoy the fresh evening air. I appreciated the traditional menu and detailed wine list. Great history to this long-standing restaurant and I truly enjoyed my visit.

Yelp
The staff at Pension Nossek pointed us this direction on our last night in Vienna. We were not disappointed. The restaurant has been there for centuries and it felt like we were eating at our Austrian families home. We each had a pretzel and a beer, then shared Grandma's potato soup, the traditional roast beef and apple struedel. Brezl Gwolb is located in a little out of the way corner of an alley, so we felt like we had a little corner of Vienna for us to enjoy on the last night in the city. It was great.

Yelp
So glad we chanced upon this one, half lost in Innere Stadt from Schwedenplatz, trying to find ourselves the last final meal before leaving Vienna, when we chanced upon a bunch of young guys waiting for a table outside the little door. When we asked one of them if there was a wait, he said, "There isn't!! Isn't that great?!" Another couple of guys (local students) convinced us that this was just a really underrated place with exceptional food. The restaurant is a charming little tavern, intentionally or unintentionally assuming a medieval flavour. The cozy setting along with a definitive character made for a great last meal before we left fabulous Vienna to come back to dreary London. The food is supposed to be traditional. It was rather heavy, albeit excellent. Portions are generous, and there was no cutting of corners. The Vienna soup pot and the Bohemian cabbage were hearty and tickled the appetite well. There is a superb selection of salads as well including a grilled chicken breast strips on leaf salad with balsamic dressing, a raw Asparagus Salad with herb vinegar and pumpkin seed oil, a house tuna salad and a greek salad. The raw Asparagus salad was commendable. Asparagus was clearly a heavily used flavour here as exemplified by several asparagus sides (cream soup, w/ potatoes, w/ hollandaise sauce, w/cheese). A large serving of the Tyrolean Grost'l, a hearty dish of pan-fried potatoes, onions, beef and spices, filled me up, but I managed to continue nibbling at my co-eaters' plates, including the Blunz'n Gröst'l (with black pudding) sitting next to me. Then of course, the others ordered the more classic dishes like the enormous Schnitzel that came with a potato salad and the Viennese goulash mit Knodel, sausages and fried eggs! The sauerkraut was excellent (for me, as well, with no appreciation of the sour) taste. The meal ended with the perfectly cooked and textured Apple strudel and food coma set in, as I found myself ushered into a cab towards the airport.

Yelp
We were at Brezlgwölb on a Friday evening with a group consisting of four adults and two children. We had reservations which was fortunate as I saw people without reservations being turned away. The atmosphere is worth five stars with a cluttered nineteenth century ambience including large leather bound menus printed in German style script. I wasn't that impressed with the food however. The pretzels were very good indeed and we all enjoyed them. I had the beef broth with liver dumpling, the salad with bacon wrapped figs, and the traditional boiled beef served with vegetables (mostly carrots). The salad was very good with lots of feta and crisp lettuce. I found the broth a little taste less and the roast beef was fairly tough and lacked much flavor. I sampled the others food which consisted of Wiener schnitzel, chicken schnitzel, polenta and roast pork and was not impressed with any of them. As reviewer Jeff H points out the chicken schnitzel was reminiscent of chicken McNuggets. Our server was helpful but our food arrived in stages and some of our group had almost finished before others were served. Given the plethora of restaurants in Vienna, I would not return.

Yelp
This was the best meal we have had so far in our 3 days in Vienna. We were on our way to a recommended restaurant in our Rick Steves book but when we found it they were out of business. In this plaza there are 5 or 6 restaurants but this one is down a small cobble stone path and very cozy.... We sat outside but the inside has great ambiance. We had the chicken filet with spinach and feta cheese and it was fantastic..... I definitely suggest stopping by here for a meal......

Yelp
Recommended this place by a colleague. Off the path and very friendly staff. Pretzels are great and food was amazing. Definitely a place to check out.

Yelp
I was here only once and I won't eat here a second time. Why: We asked before we ordered if it's possible to pay separately (this is absolutely usual in Austria) with creditcard - they have a Mastercard sticker on the door - and the staff told us that this is of course possible. But at the end of the evening when everyone of our group wanted to pay, some with creditcard, some cash, it suddendly wasn't anymore.. And I really hate starting a discussion after dinner about how to pay. Which would be the next point: The meals where ok, but definitely below average. There are better restaurants in Vienna, although I have to admit that the interior is very nice. The waiter was very unfriendly from the beginning and forgot to bring one of the meals and brought wrong drinks to the table. We were a group of about 10 people, some from Austria, some from other european countries, some from the US. One of them left earlier, the first comment of the waiter, when the one person wanted to pay, was "please don't forget anything." - but in a very unfriendly tone. There were some other things too but I don't want to write anymore, sorry..

Yelp
We stumbled onto this restaurant and decided to give it a try. We weren't disappointed! Service was somewhat typical of all the restaurants which is to say efficient . The food was the best Austrian we had. My older son and I had the pork steak and it was cooked perfectly complimented by a tzitiki sauce. Our younger son and my husband has "classics" (schnitzel and goulash) both Ali's very good! The pretzels were hot and tasty. Definitely worth finding!

Yelp
First meal in Austria- SO good!!!! We ordered the Wiener schnitzel (of course) that is served with German potato salad (ok...but great with the schnitzel!) and an order of the cheese potato dumplings- which was like a potato Mac and cheese- SO good with fried onions on top!!! Everything was great including the location in a beautiful alley. We'll probably go here again since the prices were good, food great, and location perfect!!!

Yelp
Came here as a personal recommendation from a shop worker that I met earlier in the day. She explained that it was a local treat for herself and she's brought her son here when he's coming to visit. Ordered the pretzels and beef goulash. Both were delicious. The wine was nice and crisp. My dining companion had the weiner schnitzel and enjoyed it also. Would definitely recommend this cute restaurant that's off the beaten path. Down a nice, quiet alley with outdoor seating and a fun cavernous cellar that's very cozy.

Yelp
We had a wonderful romantic dinner here our first night in Vienna. The restaurant is on a quiet cobblestone street, tucked away from the passersby. We are outside at tables where you can share a table, we did with two young men from London. The service was excellent, the food excellent. I tried my first Wiener schnitzel, my wife had the spinach dumplings. Both were great, the dumplings exceptional. She felt the pretzels served with dinner were the best, lightest she had ever experienced. We loved the experience! Great first stop for a romantic, quiet, Viennese dinner.

Yelp
Outstanding authentic Austrian/German food. Our group took over the downstairs section and all were well fed and well served.

Yelp
From early morning, you can explore the tributaries of the Danube, was then sweat I was walking unsteadily aimlessly the old town ... Once thought to be or soon become noon, it seems wandered into the alley to say from ... Ferubagasse and radar Ah Hof in good alley of unexpectedly atmosphere ... Also, On a Journey, Companions ... the world will mean that mercy, to the verge ... you have opened the door, giant such as Nio image of father (@ _ @;) Proudly and brandishing a thick arm, such as logs, anywhere but did not know well ... because German, such as has been said ... Let me sit down to where you like ... Also, for the time being to take the seat closest to the Mr. father, because the throat had been thirsty to Caracalla, beer and ... Did I think words are not through, ... you bring two glasses, has been asked by either the eye to either Of course, pointed to the big hand, was doing grin w What was unusual even customers who eat goulash from daytime, ... that nothing cup of beer ended up your place to come out dish and asked also, but had come out until soup that do not do, or for any cup was you instead beer, this seems to me to service w Although there is only to say so and meat stew is "decent taste", I wonder soup was delicious ... I think it's a store where you can enjoy and be carried out in many.

Yelp
The food was tasty enough, but extremely overpriced. Especially the Wiener schnitzel was a huge disappointment (with 19.50 euros you would except to receive a huge schnitzel, but this was not a case). When we got the bill, we were quite surprised to realise that we had been billed for 3.60 euros for two small pretzels which we thought were delivered to us as complimentary bread.

Yelp
I'm in love with this random quaint place. The interior is like an old fashioned tap room and the food was very tasty. I'm not Austrian so I can't vouch for the validity but still was very fulfilling. The pretzels can not be left behind. Served hot and fresh at the beginning of the meal. This sounds odd but the boiled beef really nailed it and the potato side sealed the deal.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice and both times the food and the service have been very good. I had a preconceived notion of what a Viennese sidewalk restaurant should be, and this place lived up to that. Out of the way, decor is old and funky. Eating inside is just as scenic as eating outside. We tried several different menu items and all were good. Plus they offer a menu in English--a real plus if you are German challenged. Worth searching out. Within walking distance of St. Stephens.

Yelp
Haven't even finished my soup as I type this and I can already say that this place is amazing! Great food, cozy location and the staff is very accommodating!

Yelp
Eating at Brezlgwölb with a friend of mine visiting from Sweden was the most unpleasant dining experience I have ever had in Vienna. The best part of this place is how it looks which is very charming .... especially in the keller. But looks can be deceiving when there is no soul. The service and food were unpleasant and not tasty respectively. The rude service began when I asked the waitress for a menu in German as I couldn't figure out the English menu translations of the Austrian dishes (the translations are terrible). She didn't see why I wanted a German menu and wasn't at all eager to give me one. The service continued with that attitude to the point we just wanted to leave. The food didn't help. The Zwiebelrostbraten had literally no taste - it was so bland and the meat was very chewy. My friend didn't like it at all. When the waitress asked my friend about her meal she got lectured to when she said she didn't find it that tasty. The Backhandl was more like chicken cutlets with the consistency of Chicken McNuggets. That was by far the better of the two dishes and as we were very hungry we ate all of it. Finally getting some salt & pepper helped. The Brezln (Austrian soft pretzels) were tasty as the bread for the meal. My friend hated this place....I didn't like the stress and the below average food. We couldn't wait to get out of this restaurant and go to some place fun in Vienna which we did, I will never go back.

Julia L.

Yelp
Worst restaurant in Vienna. It took 2 hours to get our meal (we were 3 people) and we ask the waitress about our food she answered us more than rudely. She didn't know how to treat the clients and she was very rude and impolite. Then the food wasn't worth it at all for all the time it took it. I don't even recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy.
