So glad we chanced upon this one, half lost in Innere Stadt from Schwedenplatz, trying to find ourselves the last final meal before leaving Vienna, when we chanced upon a bunch of young guys waiting for a table outside the little door. When we asked one of them if there was a wait, he said, "There isn't!! Isn't that great?!" Another couple of guys (local students) convinced us that this was just a really underrated place with exceptional food.
The restaurant is a charming little tavern, intentionally or unintentionally assuming a medieval flavour. The cozy setting along with a definitive character made for a great last meal before we left fabulous Vienna to come back to dreary London.
The food is supposed to be traditional. It was rather heavy, albeit excellent. Portions are generous, and there was no cutting of corners.
The Vienna soup pot and the Bohemian cabbage were hearty and tickled the appetite well. There is a superb selection of salads as well including a grilled chicken breast strips on leaf salad with balsamic dressing, a raw Asparagus Salad with herb vinegar and pumpkin seed oil, a house tuna salad and a greek salad. The raw Asparagus salad was commendable. Asparagus was clearly a heavily used flavour here as exemplified by several asparagus sides (cream soup, w/ potatoes, w/ hollandaise sauce, w/cheese).
A large serving of the Tyrolean Grost'l, a hearty dish of pan-fried potatoes, onions, beef and spices, filled me up, but I managed to continue nibbling at my co-eaters' plates, including the Blunz'n Gröst'l (with black pudding) sitting next to me. Then of course, the others ordered the more classic dishes like the enormous Schnitzel that came with a potato salad and the Viennese goulash mit Knodel, sausages and fried eggs! The sauerkraut was excellent (for me, as well, with no appreciation of the sour) taste.
The meal ended with the perfectly cooked and textured Apple strudel and food coma set in, as I found myself ushered into a cab towards the airport.
