February 2024 - Brickell
My fiancé and I just checked out of the Brickell Bay and we throughly enjoyed ourselves. I feel compelled to leave a detailed review as overall reviews of the hotel weren’t the best. In summary, if you’re looking for a cheap place to sleep, don’t mind brining your own cleaning suplies, and don’t mind a little noise, this is a good option. I usually stay at the Hilton but prices were just too high in my opinion. I walked around to grab updated photos for us reviewers too. We love Aruba so we would definitely stay here again in the future. More details below:
1. Booking & Communication: I booked this hotel about 3 months ago and got a nice deal. I will say, I was skeptical as the price seemed much cheaper than other hotels in the area. I emailed the hotel questions prior to booking and they responded within 24 hours and I was able to speak with staff directly via WhatsApp (phone and message) which reassured me. I booked through the hotel, not a third party. All staff was kind and respectful. The hotel is in a convenient location with walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the ~5 min walk to the beach. We didn’t rent a car and were able to walk everywhere. We booked our airport transfer vans excursions via DePalm Tours too. Hotel had a golf cart to take guests to the beach if they need it.
2. Cleanliness: I read reviews about dirty rooms so I came prepared. I brought Lysol spray and wipes, tide fabric sanitizer spray, and bed bug spray. I stripped the sheets and sprayed down the bed then remade the bed with disposable sheets I got off Amazon. Y’all - I was prepared! I would say, the room was fairly clean except for the floors. But I was not getting on my hands and knees and wiping the floor down so I placed towels on the floor to walk on. Let’s be honest - a lot of hotel floors are not the cleanest - it’s just a matter of if we can see it or not. I also traveled with a travel carbon monoxide detector to be safe since I knew the room was recently renovated - just wanted to be as safe as possible.
3. Construction & Safety: We stayed in room 127 right off the lobby. Rooms in this wing were being renovated so we did wake up to drills/bangs and voices of staff/workers in the hallways. The walls are thin - you hear everything. I was woken up by staff talking in the lobby area at 5am. Construction did start around 8:30am one morning but thankfully I am an early riser. Regarding safety, we did have someone enter our room announced which scared me (no knock and we didn’t have the tag on our door to service our room). Kinda weird since housekeeping usually knocks and announces themselves first. Didn’t happen again though thankfully. I’m an Engineer & DIYer so my eye is keen to construction-like things… I’ll spare you my full opinion. But the rooms were as pictured on the site. There was an outlet that didn’t have a cover under the desk & a few wires coming from the ceiling but it didn’t pose a safely hazard for us (this sounds crazy so I will attach a photo LOL). Beware: sink and shower faucets are backwards! We took cold showers for 2 days and brushed our teeth with hot water for 2 days…. Until one day I turned the nozzle - hot water reads as cold water and cold water reads as hot. I did notify the front desk but it wasn’t fixed during our stay. Just glad we figured that out on our own. We didn’t have issues with AC or power going out like some reviews mentioned (the AC unit was very loud though even on fan 1). Worst part - our door didn’t lock from the inside. There as a lock but it didn’t turn all the way. I wish I brought my extra door lock. I do wish there were hooks in the bathroom for towels to be hung and a shelf in the shower to put soap and what not.
4. Other Amenities: We didn’t use the pool on property as we spent our time at the beach. We also didn’t use the hotels chairs - we met up with friends at another resort so I can’t speak on these too much. I did walk around to grab some updated photos for everyone so enjoy!
