"Simple in concept, excellent in execution, the Brickyard at Mutianyu is a destination in itself, situated about a 90-minutes drive from downtown Beijing in a traditional village. Recovered tile pieces form mosaics that pop out from the red brick walls—a nod to the building’s former life as an imperial tile factory. Brickyard has a modern feel, with rustic Chinese elements that allow this hotel to blend in with the surrounding village. The eco-conscious philosophy carries through to the working organic garden on the grounds. The rooms are open-concept, one side composed entirely of floor-to-ceiling windows, with views of the Great Wall extending atop the hills in the distance. Trails used by locals lead right up to the wall (a rather challenging hike), with no guards around to collect entrance fees. The Brickyard Homes, once peasant homes, have been whimsically restored by the hotel owner. They invite Frank Lloyd Wright–esque comparisons for their ability to integrate spare Asian design into a modern context."

We really enjoyed our stay at Brickyard. We were warmly welcomed by the knowledgeable staff. The property is beautiful (mountain-wall views all over) and well-maintained. They provide multiple dining options at their own restaurants (Vietnamese, Hotpot/Chinese and Western). The location is excellent. They provide a shuttle service to the cable car to go up the mountain. We would highly recommend staying here on your Great Wall adventure!

We had an incredible stay at brickyard. The hotel is designed beautifully over the remains of an old brickyard factory, with very comfortable and fun rooms. Its location is great within a small village, just walking distance from the wall but also a cool coffee shop and fun restaurants. The staff was super friendly. The HIGHLIGHT was a massage by Luci. She was kind, attentive and gave us both one of the best massages of our life as she naturally felt our aching needs (combined Chinese and oil).

We arrived very early in the morning, and the team kindly arranged an early check-in for us along with a complimentary breakfast—an unexpected and much-appreciated gesture..The staff exceeded our expectations with their warm hospitality and attentiveness. A special shout-out to Nitin, who took the time to give us a tour of the property, ensured we enjoyed the complimentary art activity and manicure, and recommended some fantastic local eateries nearby.Check-in was quick and seamless, and the property itself is beautifully designed and incredibly relaxing. The complimentary shuttle to the Mutianyu Great Wall entrance was efficient and very convenient, making our trip effortless.Overall, it was a perfect stay, and I would highly recommend Brickyard Retreat to anyone visiting the area

I cannot say enough good things about Brickyard Retreat! I have stayed here a few times now with family and friends who have come to visit China and every time is a total joy. The setting is beautiful, design of the rooms (Great Wall view rooms in particular!) and facilities so in keeping with the history and the ease of transport to the Mutianyu section of the Wall is excellent. The best part however is the staff who are always so kind and welcoming, taking the time to greet everyone and make sure you have everything you could possibly need for your stay. Myself and my friends and family have, and will continue, to recommended Brickyard so highly. Definitely book your stay here after a morning/day walking on the Great Wall!

Amazing stay at a magical place! We’ve been coming to the Brickyard / Schoolhouse for over a decade and were pleased to see it continuing to thrive and grow. Our family of 5 (aged 10-16) had plenty of room at the Big Rock House - it’s such a unique and beautiful home in an incredible environment surrounded by views of the Great Wall and the charming village. Even better, that’s it supported by the service, amenities and dining options of the Brickyard. We enjoyed plentiful breakfast baskets each morning with eggs, sausage, fruit, bread, yogurt and more. Every need was anticipated down to the shuttle service to the Great Wall or even a quick lift back from the Brickyard when the kids didn’t feel like walking. Highly recommend! Some side notes - In years past, we walked up to the Wall between towers 18-19 directly from the village but that way is now closed off. If you’re willing to hike up past tower 20 from the outside, it looked like there was a way to access the wilder sections.

We had booked a large villa (Dashi Tou), up a 10 minutes walk from the hotel. Very spacious and with precious old furniture, beautiful building, nice little courtyard. However, the house was full of stink bugs and other insects, even in the beds and under the covers. The very friendly staff says it is due to the season (during Golden Week) but this should be controlled better. Breakfast was so-so, nothing special. with limited choice. No espresso or cream coffee. The hotel yard is very nice and quite, but no real swimming pool, just some hot tubs.

Stayed for 2 nights and their service is exceptional. A great and perfect hideaway for relaxation and to unplug. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is well thought off, not too wide but has good options for Asian and Western variety. Loved their handmade wontons and Rou Jia Mo. For a weekend getaway, a few restaurants walking distance to Brickyard---Vietnamese restaurant, Chinese hot pot and their western restaurant are a must try.
