My recent visit to Tales restaurant in the Brig O' Doon, Ayr, left me with somewhat mixed feelings. While the food and atmosphere certainly impressed, the service unfortunately cast a shadow over what could have been a truly excellent meal.||Let's start with the positives: the food was genuinely outstanding. Tales offers a varied menu, and everything we ordered was spot-on. I started with a classic prawn cocktail, which was fresh and flavourful, followed by a delicious monkfish and prawn curry. The curry was perfectly spiced, and both the monkfish and prawns were cooked beautifully. My fiancé opted for the chicken quesadillas to start, and a beef Wellington for the main course. Both dishes were reportedly excellent, with special mention given to the perfectly cooked Wellington. Portion sizes across the board were generous and satisfying, leaving us thoroughly content with the culinary offerings.||The atmosphere at Tales also deserves a commendation. Despite being quite busy upon our arrival, the restaurant had a pleasant buzz, and as tables cleared, it transitioned into a more serene and quiet setting. The view from the Brig O' Doon location is, of course, an added bonus, contributing to a lovely dining experience.||However, the service was where our experience significantly faltered. We encountered lengthy waits from the outset; it took a considerable amount of time for our order to be taken, to the point where we had to flag down a passing staff member after noticing a table seated after us had already ordered. This theme of long waits continued to the end of the meal, with an extended delay for the bill. Ultimately, we had to resort to paying at the terminal on our way out due to the prolonged wait. What was particularly disappointing was the lack of acknowledgement or apology from the staff when I mentioned the excessive waiting time. This oversight really impacted our overall enjoyment of the meal.||At approximately £100 for three drinks, two starters, and two main courses, I didn't feel that Tales offered good value for money, especially when factoring in the significant service issues. While the quality of the food was high, the poor service made the price point feel less justified.||In conclusion, while the food at Tales is undoubtedly a highlight and the setting is charming, the service aspects truly let the team down. I would hesitate to recommend Tales unless you are visiting at a significantly quieter time, or if they were to offer a more budget-friendly menu to reflect the inconsistencies in service.
