27 Thoughtful Travel Gifts From Black-Owned Businesses

"This set of six mini candles will give you or your giftee the chance to find your favorite scent—and see if it matches up with your favorite city. Addis Ababa combines frankincense, myrrh, milk, and honey to bring the Ethiopian capital alive, while Kingston features rum, grapefruit, and sweet pimento leaf to transport you to the beachy Jamaican paradise. Durham, where founder Tiffany M. Griffin, her husband Dariel, and their daughter Elena reside, uses scents of tobacco, cotton, and whiskey to recall the North Carolina city. Founded in September 2019, Bright Black was started to honor the African diaspora with its location-inspired candles. The company has since added other collections, like one called Genres that’s inspired by music."

This was truly an incredible experience. I went there with my family this past weekend to create our own scents. We had such a wonderful time, Khayla was extremely helpful and super patient with us. She gave us the backstory on how the business started and how each oil scent and candle scent has a story. The vibe was amazing, the music matched the mood. I look forward to going again, creating new scents and purchasing candles. If you love candles, body oils and a good vibe I’d suggest trying this experience.

I visited Bright Black with a group of friends on their drop in day on Saturday. It was such an inviting and welcoming experience. I like fragrance or more importantly, I know what I don’t like so to be immersed in an experience with fragrance experts and not feel overwhelmed was a great time. We worked with Sacha who was very honest about our blends, gave good feedback, and was a good source of encouragement. You have the ability to create 3 different versions of your scent and choose what most feels like you. You can also save your scent for future use. I liked that added benefit. I am always curious as to how brands like these manage to keep their momentum as it sometimes feels like something you do once but I would definitely come again to create other products. They offer candles too as well as you can purchase premade scents. Definitely a must visit for a date night, girls night out, or just a relaxing end to a stressful day!

I finally made it over to Bright Black yesterday, and the store and products are even more lovely in person than online. I'm not the most well-versed in navigating scents, and the salesperson was quite helpful in describing the inspirations and notes of different candles. The collaborations with other local businesses, particularly Earthseed, were my favorite! I'd stopped to pick up the Pauli Murray candle, and it is flying off the shelves -- they went the extra mile to label a couple more while I was there rather than having me come back later. The real test was taking these home to my much more scent-oriented family. Yall, the fact my spouse is happy to light these in the house is the most glowing review I could write about any candle. Trust me. Fortunately, the store also includes instructions on how to burn a candle properly for people who somehow leave candles smelling like burnt smoke (me).

A full sensory experience! I loved getting the chance to explore all of Bright Black's scents in person (and to take home the perfect Durham souvenir!).

It’s been some time ago I visited Bright Black for the grand opening. The store is very nice with beautiful artwork. The staff here is kind and welcoming. I purchased the “Durham” candle. Durham is a blend of tobacco, cotton, and whiskey. These ingredients in the candle smell amazing together. I’ve enjoyed my candle. I hope to make my way back for more.

I received the Bright Black Durham candle as a gift. I love this candle, more than I thought I could love a candle! ;) It is a complex, subtle, sophisticated scent. I keep it on my desk as I work, it is like have the best instrumental work music on! On a November visit to Durham I had the chance to stop in the Bright Black showroom/business both Tiffany and Dariel stopped their work to come talk to us. They were genuinely wonderful and helpful. I live in northern Vermont, candles going in the house is a winter must for me. I'm hooked. These are my candles. I can't wait to explore all the scents.
