My partner and I stayed at Harbour Hotel Brighton for a relaxing spa getaway. The hotel itself was nice, but not quite as luxurious as it looks in the photos online — the rooms felt more like a standard hotel room than something special.
The spa facilities were nice, and that was the highlight of our stay. Some of the staff were friendly, although overall the customer service could have been better.
Unfortunately, what made our experience very upsetting was how we were treated by other guests and people around the area. We experienced constant stares and uncomfortable looks, and whenever we were in the hot tub or pool, people would leave shortly after we arrived. Walking through the hotel, we felt judged and unwelcome. As a couple of colour, this was one of the worst experiences of racism we have ever faced.
We raised our concerns with the hotel, and they offered us complimentary spa treatment and advised us to contact higher management. While that gesture was appreciated, it didn’t change how uncomfortable and unwelcome we felt. We ended up leaving early because the atmosphere was so negative.
It’s a real shame because we were looking forward to a peaceful break. Sadly, we would not return, and we would not recommend this hotel to other people of colour based on our experience.
