We booked a 4-course dinner for two adults and a baby, but things went wrong from the start.
No one greeted us or showed us where to go, and even after reaching the dining area, we stood there unacknowledged. Although we had noted our baby in the booking, there was no high chair or space for one. We were squeezed into the middle of a crowded communal table, and staff awkwardly asked other guests to shift instead of offering a proper solution. Only after we raised concerns were we moved to the end of the table, a much better spot that another guest had suggested from the beginning. Poor planning and untrained staff were clear throughout.
The dinner began with a very, very long speech (20-30 min) in Norwegian. Non-Norwegian speakers were left out, with only a brief written summary in English. One staff member kept addressing us in Norwegian despite our responses in English, a clear sign of inattentive service.
The communal dining setup had potential but was poorly executed. There was only one small tabletop grill meant to serve eight people, and it was completely out of reach for us. We had to rely on neighboring guests to cook and share food, which felt awkward and unfair to them. Portions were also tiny: just two slices of cheese and a small amount of meat shared slowly among the group.
Some dishes (fish soup, meat) were good, others forgettable. Dessert was delayed and average. Despite paying early and mentioning we needed to leave because of the baby, no effort was made to serve us faster, even though the desserts were ready.
Beautiful setting, but unless you’re a Norwegian-speaking guest with no special needs, don’t expect flexibility or thoughtful service.
