Santa Barbara hotels are so, so expensive. Brisas Del Mar would be $150 a night in any other beach town, but here, it costs about three times that much.
We stayed overnight last month when we were in town for my father-in-law and his wife's birthdays, both the first week of November. We just needed a place to sleep, and the inn provided that, but I think we would've been just as comfortable with an air mattress and a pack-n-play at my sister-in-law's.
The exterior was quite attractive and well maintained, with Spanish-style architecture and some seriously pretty tiled stairways. The swimming pool was ugly, though, not that anyone was using it in November.
Some of the rooms are maybe more renovated than others, but we got a bare-bones older room that looked rather worse for wear. The mattress and bedding weren't great, and I wasn't there long enough that I felt compelled to use the shower. Our door was also weird and busted. It wouldn't close from the outside when we tried to leave our room. We had to get someone from the front desk to come and fix it for us.
Our kids enjoyed the place, though, playing with the big phone on the nightstand, putting their stuffies in the dresser drawers, and hiding in the closet. The stay package also included bike access and breakfast in the lobby, which were both useful. My husband borrowed a bike and went for a ride with our four-year-old while our little one refused his nap. We all partook in the functional breakfast spread. Store-bought bagels and pastries and some tasty yogurt and berry cups.
We had a totally okay stay at Brisas Del Mar, and would've been happy with the experience at half the price. Santa Barbara is Santa Barbara, though, so if you're willing to spend over $400 a night for a budget hotel, just know that that's what you're getting.
