On the Grid : The German Club

"With beers bigger than your backside, meals that’ll give you meat-sweats and schnapps that’ll turn you sideways – The German Club aims to please. The cherry on top of the sundae is Andrew – their in-house DJ who sings English pop songs in German. Yep, it’s even better than you can ever imagine. We’d recommend you book a big table in the beer hall and have ein hell of a nacht." - Josephmark

This place has a real old school vibe. It was fairly busy but it added to the vibe and wasn't a problem. Food on point and reasonable in pricing considering the quality and portion size. My pork belly was sensational. It came with roasted baby potato halves & sauerkraut. The beer is next level, lots of German and other European beers to choose from. Very glad I chose this venue!

Preface: I have been wanting to go here for 10 years. PORK KNUCKLE (my meal). 0.5 Star With full anticipation of enjoying one of the top pork knuckles on the east coast I was finally able to arrange a day to get to the Brisbane German Club. We arrived half-starving and prepared to sit down and gorge on tender pork and the super crispy crackling with a side of crispy potatoes and sauerkraut that only a legit German joint can dish out. Well, to say I was disappointed is an understatement. We ordered bang on midday when the kitchen opened and 11 minutes later our knuckles come out not exactly hot which was a bit worrying and then taking a look at the crackling (photo1) it looks like it has been put under an element for that 10 minutes, left static so none of the sides were made to crisp, and when I started taking apart the meat you could already tell it was going to be a dry, sub-par meal. The potatoes were again warm but not fresh cooked, the sauerkraut tasted like it was out of a tin or had been over-fermented (how you do that is beyond me) and the gravy might have been the only saving grace. For $44 this might be the worst value for money/taste/experience of the year so far. I am happy that other reviewers have had very positive experiences and from other photos it is pretty obvious BGC can pump out a great knuckle, yesterday though, it was bordering on bad. Chicken Schnitzel (wife's) 2 star. I mean, if this also ended up being bad I might have just walked up the road to KFC. The schnitzel was pretty good, but it is hard to give credit for a good schnitzel, the local fish n chip shop will do you one just as good. The mash was really ordinary. Powdery while watery, like, how do you do that? The broccoli and carrot were cooked. Small miracles. Sour Cherry Dessert Pie (mine) 2.5 star Not really a dessert guy but the pie was good, crust quite decent, filling was sufficient. Vanilla Ice Cream tasted like cheap Bulla from Coles The venue was fine, Germanic. Honestly if I went back and had a similar experience I would swear off it, there are a million places in Brisbane and venues can't afford to ship plates like these out any more. There are too many other options and it is easy to sway friends and family away from a venue in place of somewhere that is very consistent. That is my 2c. Edit, post- owner response. Hey Trent, Take another look at that pork knuckle mate, the sides are obviously just warm skin and I get that you pre-cook but the knuckles were like it was done last week and they had completely dried out. Yeah we were there for a few hours, it is a beer hall.. so, we had beers. My knuckle wasn't half finished, the potatoes were gone and that is testament to the pork being mediocre rather than the potatoes being good. Who eats all the potatoes with a good whole pork knuckle? We all decided that after a few beers it was probably not the best time to divulge how disappointed we were. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I was introduced by a German (the only way it should be) 2024 and I loved it so much my family had to come this year. The pretzels are delicious when warm and buttered mmmm. And the meal portions are the size of 2 meals for the price of one. It's any food lovers heaven not to mention the beautiful atmosphere the German culture brings. Such joy you will have here. Danke!

The authentic Brisbane German Club is ideally located at 416 Vulture St,Kangaroo Point QLD 4169. This fine club caters to everyone's tastes when you want to enjoy original German foods 😋 You can enjoy pork knuckle, the original pretzels which were absolutely delicious 😋 Leberkase meatloaf is another fine meal to enjoy along sauerkraut, on their menu you can try all forms of sausages and array of potato, whether it be baked or mashed🥔 The Brisbane German Club has a fine array of irresistible German desserts and pastries such as apple strudels and black forest cakes. The typical Oktoberfest dessert is apple strudel and yeast dumplings with vanilla sauce 😋 The Brisbane German Club has a large range of German beers on tap you can always ask the friendly bar staff what would be a beer of your choosing 🍺 The Oompah pah band play live entertainment 🎶 on Friday and Saturday nights. The Brisbane German Club has the original set up in this establishment to enjoy an experience of fine foods, drinks and entertainment in a large beer hall environment. To be guaranteed of enjoying a visit to the Brisbane German Club pre booking online is strongly recommended due to its popularity 👍 There is limited parking on-site with disabilities parking also available. There is street parking available within easy walking distance around the local area. The Brisbane German Club is located directly across the the road of the home of the Brisbane Lions 🦁, the Gabba, so parking on match days is limited around the local streets. Brisbane City Council buses run regularly and there is a large bus station again within easy walking distance to the Brisbane German Club.

Over the last year or so the food quality has become shockingly bad. The schnittys are processed beyond belief, the texture of the meat itself is like rubber. The mash potatoes are now a weird yellow-broken dirt-tasting powdery paste. Veg are undercooked but at least they’re fresh. Bratwurst is also very low quality and has chunks of gristle. Chips and desserts (and the weekly trivia) are the only redeeming factors and both come frozen or made elsewhere. Very disappointing as their prices have only got higher. I now eat before we come here for trivia. Edit: tonight at trivia my family member got the sausages and there were entire blood vessels inside. Absolutely disgusting.

We loved this place so much that we had dinner here twice in a row. They have plates for two and lots of different beers. I haven’t tried them yet but they look really good! I highly recommend this place.

Google
A classic German experience at the German Club in Brisbane. The club decor is classically German pub style with order at the counter and bar service. The food all looked fantastic and smelt great. The Pretzel was THE BEST 👌 Even better than a top German Bakery in south Germany. The Kessler tasted great, sauerkraut flavours were fantastic. The potato dumplings were ok, not much flavours in neither the mash potato dumplings or the sauce. The Salmon Spaetzle tasted good and was cooked nicely. Service was good for a pub club environment. Definitely book ahead as it's very busy and parking is also very limited in their small car park and off street parking. Pricing is average, but the food quality seems worth it with the added entertainment and atmosphere. Keep in mind, it gets fairly noisy, so if your group is bigger than 6, you may struggle to hear each other talking.

Yelp
Great place for a get together with friends. Easy enough to find on Vulture St, South Brisbane, can drive up and park but these are quickly gone, so may need to settle for a street park. COVID + age check in at door. There is social distancing. You can walk in but it is a favorite lunch venue for work & social groups. Once you've worked out seating - the bar and food counter are walk up and order, given a number on holder, and the then order is delivered to the table. You come come for the German food and drink. It's good. The pork knuckle is the challenge - huge portion. Reasonably priced. ENJOY!

Yelp
The German Club is a Brisbane institution with an extensive selection of imported beer on tap and great German food. All the classic German menu items are there - pork knuckle, schnitzel, sausage, kasseler and sauerbraten (German pot roast). The portions are generous and the everything is very reasonably priced. The atmosphere is great too - you really feel like you are in a German beer hall!!

Yelp
Went here for the first time for the Oktoberfest festivities on a Saturday and the first thing I thought to myself was: Where has this place place been all my life? Pork knuckle. Jugs of delicious Bavarian beer. Long tables so you can mingle with other people and a great beer garden in the back if you need a breather after spending too much time mingling inside. I came for the beer but stayed for the food. On tap, you've got just about everything you need - weissbiers, dunkels, lagers. The typical stuff you'd find at Bavarian Bier Cafe or German Sausage Hut like Hofbrau, Erdinger and Lowenbrau were all available. However, once you take a look at the smattering of bottled choices, you'll then begin to see how truly special this place is. For food, I'll leave you with my photo of the pork knuckle on sauerkraut and mash. The thing was bigger than my head! And the crackling and meet had just the right amount of crunch and succulent tender flavor. Needless to say, I couldn't finish it. If were to do that again, I'd most likely share with someone else rather than risk exploding. Overall, it was an awesome experience and I'm definitely keen to go back again. Anyone who likes German beers will need to make a trip over. Top tip: make a day of it and don't have any plans after. You may find that the beer ends up making that decision for you!

Yelp
Finally made it to the German Club for the first time since moving to Brissy last year. Why did I wait that long??? The food is truly authentic German, the selection of beer is superb, and the atmosphere ranges from Gaststube to Bierkeller with live music. My recommendation: order the delicious Spätzle instead of the potato dumplings with the Sauerbraten.

Yelp
The only way you can get into here is you have to be a member or with an existing member. Very busy after a afl game. We went into the dining room for dinner and a show. Young kids loved dancing and with lots of entertainment for them. There was 4 birthday groups there on the Saturday night we went. Great friendly staff. It's a boys dream though. It was ok for me, but as I don't eat majority of German dishes I resorted to the fish. But the males with us had a blast and even dung the "chicken Song". Decor is very German club looking. But that's what you expect. Our friend just wanted to have the pork knuckle, which went down a treat with his beer! This is what men love!!!

Yelp
Simple delicious comfort food. So stoked it's winter as it's a fantastic excuse to come by the German club!! Sehr gut! Sehr köstlich!

Yelp
I had just returned home to Sysney from an amazing holiday in the US and Mexico when four days later I had to get back on a plane and head to Brisbane. Tired, over-stimulated and broke... I dared Brisbane to "bring it... Go on... Try and make me have fun while all I want to do is lay still in my own bed and mourn the end of my holiday..." My friend brought me to the German Club... I had a ball! What a great venue for eating, drinking, dancing and laughing with new and old friends! People mingled across the room and even my daggiest dance moves felt welcome... It's just a friendly, social, be yourself kind of place... So refreshing! Food and beer was plentiful and delicious (in that German kind of way). Decor/general vibe is pretty unspectacular... Which was totally fine... I don't really choose my venues according to what's on the walls. All of this aside, one of the standout features of this place is Andrew! Andrew the one man band... Hilarious and awesome! So much fun...

Yelp
Amazing place ! Very crowded but a great fun , family atmosphere with awesome food and beer ... Pork knuckle is exceptional!! The rissoles are huge and you can share as you get two and they are too much for one person .. Apple strudel is heavenly !!! Love this place !!

Yelp
The Short: My new favourite place to go for German (sorry German Sausage Hut). The Long: Was invited by my mates to experience the club (of which you need to either be a member of, or have any other reciprocal membership to enter). Started off the experience with a Budvar (original Czech Budweiser) which is on tap. I wasn't disappointed and I don't know of any other place where this particular beer is available as a draft option here in Brisbane. For lunch, I chose from the burger board, and had a Pork Belly Burger. Sweet lord: one of the best burgers I've had. The pork belly was falling apart, the gravy was rich and meaty, the slaw was crunchy and fresh, the onion was caramelized to perfection, the bun was crusty and fresh. And the crackling. Oh the cracking. Thin and crisp, and not a skerrick of fat left on it. Just pig skin, done right. If I was working closer to this place, it would be a very dangerous place for me.

Yelp
Heaven does exist on earth. It's just across the road from the Gabba. It's called The German Club. When you walk in, you'll either need to become an associate member ($5) or bring an associate member with you so you can sign in as their 'guest'. Once you're inside the club, you'll see a full bar laid out in front of you, some pokies to the right, and a german beer hall to your left. Take a peek into the beer hall. It's hall long lines of formally dressed tables and draped german flags just make you itch to get into a pair of lederhosen quick smart. You'll make your way to the bar. They have a small book like beer menu there. Be sure to read it, and select a beer that sounds like something you'd enjoy. Each beer on offer has quite a distinct character, and because the beers they give you are bigger than your head, you'd do well to do some research and ask some questions first. You do not want to struggle your way through a beer that you're just not into. Never mind about stuttering out the names of the beers if you're not a German speaker. The staff are used to it. They'll probably say the name back to you to make sure they're going to get you the right one (and to show you how smart and how German they are). Let's move on to the food. Consider how hungry you are before you order. You might not need one meal. It might be a good idea to share. The servings are HUGE. As far as recommendations go, well, you just can't go past the pork knuckle. Expect a lot of potato, meat, and sauerkraut. While you're there, make sure you look up towards the ceiling just above the dining area (in main bar). Take a look at those serious, stout, sexy looking Germans. (Really, this isn't just something I'd enjoy- take a look). The German Club is my personal idea of heaven. It has everything I love (beer AND meat AND potato) in offensively large quantities. Bliss!

Yelp
When we walked in we signed up for a Social Membership $5, for that we get $5 off entry to Oktoberfest, so Win Win! The food and service was great, everyone was really nice! We ordered our food (Pork Schnitzel and Sauerbraten). We found a nice table in a room near the back and sat down with our drinks. About 15 minutes later we had both meals, and they were delicious. Simple traditional German food! The prices were great too, under $35 for both! If you are looking for a traditional environment for a date or a table for 20 or more, go try, it's great. To make it even better the range of beer and ciders is fantastic.

Yelp
The best pork belly ever... The end!!! I first ordered the pork knuckle, which was awesome, but since ordering the pork belly I have never looked back. You most definitely won't be disappointed. Cost is great too, about $27. Completely full afterwards. I have never seen a sad person at this place. Happiest place on earth!

Yelp
I don't usually add to already heavily reviewed venues, but I can't resist with the German Club. Like Meg I've been holding out on reviewing this favourite haunt of mine (hate me if you will but you'll understand when you go). To start with, just pay the $5 membership. It's only $5 and you then get kudos when you take your mates there. Secondly, bring your eating pants - nay, bring your bib. That's how much you're gonna enjoy the food. Thirdly, if you don't like beer this place will make you sad, if only because everyone else around you likes beer so much and they're having such a great time with it. Oh and leave any pretentions at the door, not welcome or necessary.

Brenton H.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and great selection of Bavarian beers (both on tap and bottled). Decided to become a member after just one visit. Will definitely be a regular.

Yelp
German Beer. Czech. German Food. Czech. Good times guaranteed? Czech. I'm not a member here because my last name is German or because I live down the road. I'm a member because it's always a good time and the beer gets me every time!

Yelp
Well, the idea of a Review is to compliment the eatery and send business their way. I am almost of two minds about this. This place is just "too good", and I would hate for it to become too popular, and lose the "basic" touch that it has. But such are the risks that we have to take. Location - Central - staggering distance from the Gabba Bus INterchange. Decor - dated but interesting Alcohol - mmmm, died and gone to beer heaven - more beers than you can imagine. Food - good basic hearty german fare - you have to try the pork knuckle - starve yourself for a few days before hand - it is not for the faint-hearted. I recall the staff mentioning that they serve something like 1500 of these a month - clearly one of their more popualr items.
google avatar

Steven L.

Yelp
ARGH! Here's the thing. You queue up to get in. It's super busy and super noisy. If you like that sort of thing, great. I don't. But it's worth it. Yeah, there's beers... I don't drink beer, but go hard. It's the meals. Everyone kept talking about the pork knuckle. I was skeptical, but I ended up ordering the pork knuckle. Well, it takes ages, but it's worth the wait. MASSIVE. And yes, as the name suggests, there's a lot of bone on your plate, but chances are there's also more meat than you can shove down your gullet. I was the only person at my table to finish it. I'm tossing up getting that again on the next visit, or going for the equally generous pork belly. Parking is limited, and I wouldn't even try when there's a game on at the Gabba, but it's also walking distance from the busway.
google avatar

Yelp
Although it is a bit pricey at the first sight (you have to pay $5 annually for the membership), overall it is a great place. Good location, delicious food. Love sausages for $16.9! And beeeeer!
google avatar

Rae O.

Yelp
Well... After being invited for a birthday dinner I was a bit worried I wouldn't like it... I have to say, the staff weren't very friendly the decor is old but I can see what they are trying to do with it. Two of us order the special that should have come with mash potato but when it arrived it had chips and we were told with a very unfriendly face and no apology that the mash potato ran out a while ago. Had they bothered to mention this when we order we probably would have chosen something else since I personally don't like chips at all, or maybe they could have offered us the roast potatoes instead. Everyone generally loved there food, it was the service and luck of caring that made it a bad experience.

Yelp
Brisbane has an Oktoberfest every year at the RNA show grounds, but with it's roughly $16 entry fee, I think you get much the same experience here at the German Club, but for better value. The German club has a huge range of European beers, a menu packed with delicious meals of schnitzels the size of your face, German sausages and other traditional German dishes. The German Club offers a nice sit-down dining experience, or if you'd prefer just to have a couple of beers, there's a good (often quite rowdy) atmosphere in the bars too. I really think the German Club is just as good as, if not better than Oktoberfest in Brisbane and you can have it all year round!

Yelp
Circa 1946....... Not a great night out.... But the food is plentiful... Comprehensive menu... Please any pallet..... The pork knuckle of course is everyone's fav...... I always add red cabbage or spatzel....or sauerkraut or all of the above!!!!! Love the beers.... Beer garden is roomy... Parking can be an issue.....

Ben H.

Yelp
$5 to become an associate guest was the best decision any of my friends and I ever made. All beer needs to come in Steins. And all pork needs to be eaten as the knuckle variety. Bratwurst should be a side to every meal. Oh you clever Germans. I'm so impressed. The function room here is the best part, if you need a place for an 18th, 21st, Buck's Night, then have a look at the German Club for a venue. It's a huge wide-open room that throws back to the old school drinking halls of Munchen or Berlin.

Yelp
Not a lot more to be said, German beer, relaxed atmosphere. Slightly pricey but you do get that good delicious beer. And who can say no to a pork knuckle? An old staple of the Brisbane drinking scene. Best enjoyed on non-gabba event days and outside of the October fest period.
