"Landes, France Life is sweet on the shores of Lake Hossegor, a few hundred yards from the rollers that draw surfers from around the world to this southwest corner. Both rugged and cool, the Landes region is usurping the nearby Basque Country in the hearts of Parisians. They come here with their children for August holidays to sidestep the chi-chi hotspots of Ile de Ré and Juan-les-Pins, to roam the countryside and have space to plant their parasols on the beach. Most families hole up in the wooden-shuttered houses between the lake and the sea, but this summer they’ll be clambering for rooms here. This classic hotel, tucked into the pines, was taken over and transformed by the Domaines de Fontenille group: after a top-to-toe renovation it now looks like a kind of midcentury-modern Hamptons surf lodge. The restaurant with its bulb-string-lit terrace serves up a sunny menu of pan-fried squid, mussels, and hay-roasted chicken. Bedrooms are light and bright, and downstairs whisky decanters and loose-covered sofas have made way for jute rugs on polished-concrete floors, decorative surfboards stacked in a corner, cane benches, and velvet footstools. It feels smart, but also somewhere for wet footprints coming in from the pool or sandy toes from the beach. And the real focus is the sea. The surf clubs that run along La Côte d’Argent offer lessons to everyone from first-timers to near-pros, and there are all sorts of surf competitions and festivals to watch, as well as paddle-boarding on the lake and yoga back at the hotel. A fresh way to tap into the salty-haired vibe of the area, but without the villa hassle of having to cook supper or make the beds. Perfect easy access location for a rest after a long journey. Super friendly staff and a very quiet and comfortable nights sleep. Good value room too, having found a good deal online. Only slight issue was a lack of air-con, but there was an incredible fan which did make the hot night a lot more comfortable. I did not try the bar or restaurant as all I needed was the wonderfully comfortable bed. It was an excellent nights sleep!

This has to be one of the best hotels I've stayed in with my family from staff, facilities, cleanliness , comfort and location definitely going back to stay longer as we only stayed one night during our road trip 5 🌟 couldn't recommend enough

The staff at the reception were super friendly and even spoke English. The rooms are clean, and the price is fair. I have no complaints and would recommend this hotel to anyone :)

We booked with an offer of a 1-hour thermae access. This was denied by reception... only to find a green pass access pass in the room. Reception training required! GREAT LOCATION

Dreadful restaurant. Fixed price two choice three course meal I have eaten better school dinners! The staff never gave eye contact and one went put of their way ro ignore us. I understand that they may not have been able to speak English but a nod and a smile are universal in any language. While I was in the queue waiting to pay, the woman taking the payments raced off and chased my husband for not payment. It wasn't mush of a chase as he has mobility issues. When I gave the same woman the paper that had been left on the table she again walked off with no explanation without taking my money. I complained at the reception and the very lovely person on duty gave me her apologies. I returned to pay, angry and sad.

Older style hotel but in very good condition located next to the lake. Rooms are a good size, clean and comfortable. No pool in the hotel but one next door…..at a price

Great value, nice big room overlooking the lake. Big comfy double bed. Plenty of free parking in hotel grounds. Spa on ground floor but we didn't have time to use it. Friendly staff. Lovely Restaurant, good breakfast. Happy to return.

A large hotel overlooking the lake. The room was a good size and attractive, the bathroom was nice but unfortunately the toilet was separate in a small room, not a good idea. It is an hotel that caters for elderly French people on holiday and they sit in odd corners playing cards, but for an overnight stay it was very good value for money. It was also immaculately clean. Unfortunately one could hear the traffic which started quite early in the morning.
