7 Best Day Trips from New York City

"Cocktail obsessives have one daydream: to find a bar with excellent drinks for about a third of what they’d pay in New York or San Francisco. This is that bar. Order The Last Word if you’ve never had one, a Sazerac, or maybe something made with sherry, a fortified wine that drinks master Evan Bucholz understands how to wield wisely. Use those cocktails to wash down pizza from 1943 Pizza Bar next door. Whether you go for a white pie decked out with clams or a classic margherita, the food here—including some killer wood-fired meatballs—is better than most people expect." - Alex Van Buren, Andrea Whittle, Devra Ferst

Google
Excellent pizza, drinks, and service. We arrived around 6:15 on a Saturday and had to wait around 40 min for a table but we could leave a number and wait for a text so we walked around the town for a bit. Our waiter was very friendly and everything came out pretty quick. We had a burrata and roasted broccolini app that was delicious. The drinks menu was clearly meticulously crafted and I can say they were the best cocktails I’ve had on Long Island. They’re true craft cocktails with respect for the spirits and subtle layering of flavors. Recommend the felonious monk and the clarified milk. Clams casino pizza was delicious. Fair pricing especially for the level at which everything is executed.

Google
The best cocktail bar on Long Island by a country mile. Evan is an expert host and bartender. The pizza is fantastic. Lighting perfect. I don’t care if you live in Idaho, its worth the drive.

Google
We loved Brix & Rye! We came to this cocktail bar on a recommendation— and it didn’t disappoint! The building is very unassuming from the outside (we almost thought it was closed) but when we went inside we found a very dimly lit but inviting bar! The bartenders were very attentive and even made a custom drink for us when we couldn’t decide what we wanted. Would definitely visit again!

Google
Everything here is fantastic. We started with the cocktails, of course, which were smooth, complex, interesting, *and* delicious and refreshing. We built our own pizza which stood toe-to-toe with some of the best places in NYC, the sauce being the standout. And we wrapped up with a mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwich with a buttery but not underdone and somehow also cold cookie stuffed generously but smartly with velvety ice cream. Cannot recommend enough.

Google
We had the best experience at Brix & Rye for our weekend stay in Greenport. Evan runs a really special bar with incredible cocktails and service. We’ll be back! (I’ve never left a google review before but felt compelled to share because of how great it was!)

Google
Very nice place. We came in from out of town with 7 people and they just made room for us even though the place is very small, very accommodating. David was a great waitor drinks were amazing and the pizza was too! Loved really everything, they even have a very cute outdoor section and takeout area that's separate. Wish I lived locally cause I would definitely frequent there, I recommend

Google
Excellent speakeasy-style cocktail bar in Greenport. Prices actually fair and not the typical inflated Hamptons stuff. Bartenders knowledgeable about mixology. One of my favorite out east, if you're in Greenport definitely check it out for pre-dinner drinks or a way to end an evening.

Charlie Chalkin

Google
Hands down the best pizza ever I’ve ever had- consistently… every pie every time. Get the meatballs, stuffed peppers… actually, you can’t go wrong. Get everything and thank me after! Get creative with your pizza. Go off menu. Live a little.

Yelp
Some of the best pizza pies we've ever had. We were doing a day in the North Fork, and we had heard great things. This is a place this is definitely worth going out of your way for. It's in the basement level of an art gallery to make it seem like a speakeasy. Really dark in there. Probably good for a date out there. Small menu with a handful of apps, handful of white pies, and a handful of red pies. We got an arugula salad with tomatoes, goat cheese, and grapefruit, a clams casino pie (white), and an nduja pizza (red). Larger pizzas. One is too little for two people, 2 is too much. Top notch pies coming out though. The clams casino was my favorite. Great flavor. Clams were fresh and not overpowering

Yelp
I was visiting from the Philadelphia area with my fiancée. My host took us here. The bartender Evan was extremely experienced and very friendly. I ordered a ceaser salad. It was fantastic. The dressing was delicious. My fiancée ordered the meatballs and a pizza. Loved it! I had an espresso martini. Very good! It's a very secluded and fun place. Very dark and swanky. My only complaint was the music was too loud. Otherwise, I highly recommend it. Cheers!

Yelp
Brix and Rye is a small speakeasy that was a great find. Although there was no room when we dropped by, our server (Daniel?) took our number and let us know he'd text us when a table was ready. My husband and I ended up playing shuffleboard upstairs while we waited. Tip: you're able to order drinks and have those drinks upstairs while you wait! We got seated within 20 minutes and our server was super attentive, despite being the only server making the rounds between various tables. I'm unfortunately forgetting the names off the top of my head, but we got the red pie with Nonna's meatballs as well as the white pie with clams. Both were fantastic. My husband doesn't usually eat crusts, but he ate the crusts of this pizza, saying that it was one of the best he's had. It was a bit dark, but that's to be expected for a speakeasy. Definitely a place to take a date or stop by for a casual night out with friends. It can get crowded and loud (even at 9p!) but we enjoyed our time and because there aren't as many tables, could still chat and hear each other. I'd definitely stop by again and try some other pizzas!

Yelp
Chill neighborhood spot that feels like hanging out in your buddy's basement. The cocktails are fantastic and the pizza is even better. Highly recommend getting meatballs on your pizza.
google avatar

Yelp
I read about this place before our trip out to Greenport. It's been named best cocktails in quite a few places! There's no sign on the storefront, so we weren't even sure if we had the right place. Once you enter, you go downstairs to a dark bar. Cocktails are great, and pizzas are also delish. Menu is limited to mostly pizza and salad so if you want anything other than that, this night not be your place for dinner. They also had meatballs. My favorite cocktail was the Second Language and the Short Sword was fantastic, and had quite a kick. Our bartender was friendly and kind.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere good drinks pleasant staff. Also a plus that you can order pizza and food highly recommend.

Yelp
Love this place! Solid cocktails and service! Always a good vibe at this place and i love the shuffleboard table.

Yelp
This could be the most disgusting hole in the wall basement bar in NY The place smells like a prison Urine and beer are the most prevailing oder. The drinks are all watered down And the service sucks The bartender is to busy spewing radical political drivel to serve patrons So many better choices in Greenport

Reef S.

Yelp
Visited Greenport for me and my girlfriend's anniversary, stopped here for some drinks and pizza not expecting too much and were honestly blown away. The owner helped us out in picking cocktails based on our likes and dislikes and they all turned out amazing. The pizza was delicious with many different topping options and you could tell they were made fresh. This place is an awesome little spot in Greenport and I cannot recommend enough. *Ps: mashed potatoes, bacon and caramelized onions on a white pie...just trust me

Yelp
In town for a wedding and we were looking to bar hop (on a Sunday) and came across brix & rye and absolutely loved the vibe. Wicked cool and the bartender, Rob, was awesome! I knew I wanted a drink with egg whites and he delivered! He was awesome and really enjoyed our experiences because of him. Will definitely come back if we're ever in town again!

M M.

Yelp
Easily my favorite spot in Greenport! You might have to wait to get in, but it's absolutely worth it. The cocktails are great and the owners and team behind the bar are exceptional! Love the dark, speakeasy feel of the place as well. 10 out of 10 recommend.

Yelp
Service was great! They were so nice and accommodating. Drinks were good but Pizza really hit the spot. Small place, but worth taking a chance on.

Yelp
Southside Collins and a fantastic pizza makes for a perfect night in greenport. Best cocktails and pizza in town...hands down!

Trina L.

Yelp
Great place the pizza is always so good!! Come everyone I'm visiting Greenport. The clams casino pie was delicious but we also had the goat cheese pesto and prosciutto there are no words..mmmm m

Yelp
Brix & rye is a cool spot to check out in greenport. What looks like a basic storefront is actually the entrance. Downstairs is the bar. It has a speakeasy feel and has a bunch of specialty cocktails. You can order pizza from the 1943 pizza place which, I assume is owned by the same owners. The pizza is phenomenal. If you're in greenport, Brix and rye is a must stop.

Yelp
We did a last minute trip to Greenport last night. Glad we did. We had a great time! Walked around a bit and decided to try Brix & Rye. We got there at a good time because we got a table right away. We were IDed at the door and walked down the stairs and sat down. It was dim lit/ dark and we got a menu right away. What we ordered: - Nonna Lucille's Wood Fired Meatballs - Classic Margarita - sauce pie, fresh mozzarella, basil, garlic - white wine (I forgot which) - Devil Take the Hindmost - Applejack, Jamaican Rum, Stone Pine Liquor, Strega, Orange Bitters We were full by the time we were done. I had such a great experience here...I'm glad we got to try it. Everything we got was delicious! Try this place out! You'll have a great time. I'll be back, for sure. Sorry about the dark pictures...it was pretty dark. So dark that a complete stranger put his candle on the side of my pizza for better lighting lol.

Charles V.

Yelp
Best mixed drinks on Long Island and the pizza is up there with the best. If you like garlic, try the Red Pie with extra garlic and no cheese.

Yelp
After an afternoon of visiting some of the North Fork's wineries for my birthday, my wife and I hit Greenport and decided to try the funky Brix & Rye for dinner. We weren't disappointed in this dark, cozy, romantic speakeasy-type pizza and cocktails joint. Yes, pizza and cocktails, two of my favorite things to consume, and consume them we did! The lights are low (you might need your phone's flashlight to read the menu, as we did) but that adds to the ambience. The service was awesome, our host made sure we were comfy and well taken care of. The cocktail list is superb and imaginative (very Brooklyn), but I went with a classic, a stellar mai tai (Trader Vic's 1944 style). Authentic and amazing. For pizzas, my wife and I split the house margarita and Italian Scallion, both were delicious. Will be back for more drinks and pizzas next time we are out East.

Yelp
- Don't listen to Yelp, they close at 10pm, not 1:30pm - perfect drinks - perfect service - went in on Saturday 7pm, told it would be an hour wait, they called a half hour later - the bartenders are craftsmen - I cant believe drinks are only $12/13...I'd easily pay $15-20. they are worth that much

Laura P.

Yelp
I can't stop thinking about this pizza!! I live in Florida!!! Wtf!! I need you to open in Tampa!! It's really expensive to have to fly for Pizza! My son made me eat the one with mashed potatoes I thought it sounded wierd he said trust me!! We ordered more than one!!

Yelp
Phenomenal drinks. Great pizza. Wonderful service. Certainly a jewel in the heart of Greenport.

Jessica K.

Yelp
Fantastic. Not a huge menu, but this is rather a place to sit and relax with a drink. Menu consists of salads, pizzas, meatballs, and ample alcohol. The space downstairs had a really chill vibe, it's dark, full of wood, and feels like a speakeasy. Expert mixologist behind the bar, I got a tequila something or other, the name I can't remember because I just had to have two of them. The meatballs were out of control. The sauce was so good I basically drank it when the meatballs were gone. Salad was also delicious with yellow watermelon, and I created my own slightly drunk pizza concoction of white pizza, caramelized onions, mashed potatoes, and truffle oil. DON'T JUDGE ME.

Courtney T.

Yelp
Delish food and meatballs. Wish I didn't have to throw my coat and bag on the ground to use the bathroom though.
google avatar

Frank T.

Yelp
Cool place with a speakeasy vibe. The front entrance is empty except for a old fashioned bowling game and an antique post office mail box. Follow the sunset room sign down a few stairs and you are now in Brix & Rye. The restaurant is small, the bar is on one side of the restaurant and tables on the other side. They have a nice selection of cocktails including several bourbon concoctions. It was a hot day so I went with the backsliding Presbyterian, a bourbon, campari, ginger, lemon and soda. The food served is from the 1943 pizza bar next store. Worth the visit just for the pizzas. It a bit dark inside but that adds to the coziness
google avatar

Marissa D.

Yelp
DARK BAR ALERT. Major speakeasy vibes. It's not that easy to get a table here but we lucked out. They make a damn good hot toddy which is great for fall. The pizza is so good and fresh. They can customize aspects if it, like only putting bacon on one half to accommodate for vegetarian friends. It had a fun atmosphere and I could see myself spending hours there. Didn't take pics because it was too dark and I didn't want to be that person with the flash.
google avatar

Zach G.

Yelp
I love this bar. It has creative drinks, a great "underground" atmosphere, and what's more, unlike other bars, you don't have to ask for water. You get there, they give you water. I'm writing this review the morning after with only a minute hangover because the bartenders at B&R kept me and my friend loaded with water and I couldn't be more grateful. Keep up the good work!
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
The short: my go-to cocktail bar when I'm in town. The longer: my boyfriend lives in the area, and I live in NYC. This is our go-to spot for late night cocktails in the area. It feels Manhattan-y, as it's a darkly lit speakeasy-vibe with cool decor and candle lighting. The cocktails are amazing... and their wine list is on point. I've been very happy with all the gin drinks and big red wines I've had. Unlike NYC, this place is totally unpretentious. It's a mixed crowd of folks who are usually pretty happy to see each other, and the bartenders/wait staff. Small town vibes. AND the best part: you can order some of the best pizza in town. Clams casino. Margarita. Meatball. All the pizzas I've had here have been out of control delicious. Highly, highly recommend for a nice cocktail, great vibe & yummy meal/snack!
google avatar

Rob P.

Yelp
The only real craft cocktail lounge on the North Fork. They also serve pizza from the 1943 restaurant above which I've previously reviewed. Is it a little bit hipster?, yes but that's only because anything that is retro/cityish gets that tag thrown on it nowadays. Honestly it's a really cool speakeasy with a great selection & professional bar men. There are so many summer style bars & restaurants in Greenport it's nice to have an establishment you can enjoy all year long.
google avatar

Avalyn J.

Yelp
This cocktail bar is the BEST in Greenport LI. It's got that speakeasy feel to it. If you're passing by along the street and aren't aware what the place is you would never know. Glass entry doors open up to a table shuffleboaard on your right and a window seating area on your left. There also are two hidden bathrooms. Proceed down the stairs. Thats where you'll walk into a dark dimly lit awesome space. We chose a table since we wanted to eat but normally i prefer sitting at the bar. Theirs was quite a decent size. For drinks: Rye Old Fashioneds - 5 Food: Wood fired meatballs - 5 OMG! A MUST AS A STARTER Special of the day pizza - 5 I believe it had sausage, basil, mozzeralla, ricotta and ugh cant remember but it was reallyyyyy good. Service wise the bartenders and waitress were on point.

Yelp
What a great spot. Thoroughly enjoyed everything about this place. The food the music the drinks the people great casual spot.
google avatar

Maria P.

Yelp
We are staying in Greenport for the weekend- and tried this place on a Sunday night. It was packed with locals, which is always a good sign. For drinks I had the Red Letter and my husband had the Banana's Justino. Both were great. We split the arugula salad and the speciality red pie. Overall, the food was great and the servers are friendly.
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
So hard to find- (it's a speakeasy) but once you get into this narrow just dark enough spot- it's worth the effort! Not a huge menu- salads and homemade pizzas and a few other things - but the salad - meatballs and pizzas we ordered were excellent! Can't think of something new to drink-ask your waiter tell him your preferred liquor and their mixologists behind the bar will whip up something you'll really like. As I said it's small maybe 12 people at bar and same at tables but it's a fun place to pop into when you're in Greenport!

Matt C.

Yelp
My wife and I went to Greenport for the weekend and we heard Brix & Rye was a must. We couldn't find it for a while as it is hidden, which is very cool. We sat down Saturday night for dinner and WOW. We are from the New York/CONN and have had all the top pizza places from Sally's to John's of Bleekers. I have to be honest. Brix might have had the best pizza I have ever had in my life. The pizza was top tier, the vibe was AWESOME. You must go to this establishment.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
I couldn't have loved Brix + Rye more if I wanted to. My husband and I were hangin around the North Fork for a couple of days and made our way to Brix + Rye for pizza and cocktails on the first evening in town (and, let's be honest, got takeout here the next night). The moody, candlelit space provided a lovely ambiance and served as the prelude for some wonderful eats + drinks. While musing over the menu, we started with cocktails - a sazarac for him and the Northside Collins for me. The combination of gin, pamplemoose, cucumber, mint and soda was almost too perfect. Flavorful, refreshing, summery - all that good stuff and more. We decided to go off the build-your-own pizza list and ordered a white pie with garlic + mozz, topped with bacon, ricotta, truffle oil, and fried egg. IT WAS AMAZING. For dessert, we shared a glorious seasonal specialty- a strawberry rhubarb tart with what I think was vanilla chantilly cream. Perfect way to end a delightful meal. Friendly, efficient service, cool setting, and some seriously great food and cocktails. Go!
google avatar

Rashi H.

Yelp
The food service drinks everything here is 100/100. Evan was making our drinks he was so so good , felt like we were in his living room and he was sharing his passion of making drinks. The drink ' The last word' was outstanding! The pizzas were great, from the hostess to the wait staff, everyone was great! Can't wait to go back there.

Rip F.

Yelp
Great Pizza Options, Great Drinks, Nice Informal Dinner I brought 4 couples here last week after a day visiting Greenport. We were hungry and thirsty. This was a great place to stop for a casual and delightful dinner. Between us, ordered some beer, wines, and specialty drinks, all served cold and quickly. Ordered multiple pizzas knowing we could take home extras- devoured most but had leftovers that they boxed up for us to take home. We all left happy. One word of warning- when you go downstairs during daylight it's really dark and hard to read the menus- so we used the flashlight features on our cellphones to overcome this. If you finish dinner and go back outside and it's still light out, your eyes have accommodated to their basement speakeasy darkness and it's a bit blinding. I think this is very cool but want to make other aware of it if they go here.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing find in Greenport! Newly minted hubby and I came here after checking in for our mini-moon for the weekend. Cocktails and pizza, can it go wrong? Apparently it can't. Cuz shizzle was amazing! We shared two pies, one being a white pie which I usually don't enjoy but we ordered in case hubb might (we didn't; so cheers for having the same tastes!), [white pie fans, order away!] but the other being an amazing red pie with fresh mozzarella and cherry peppers with arugula and spicy fennel sausages. YUM. And the cocktails, amazing! I lamented to A, I wish this was a local spot ! And they have shuffleboard! Fun! Love love love and must try in Greenport!
google avatar

Luuis A.

Yelp
Bartender is just great, drinks are good, the entrance is just a trick for you is empty but when you go down you deel the good vibe very recommended for couples/friends or even alone the bartender are very friendly

Gena G.

Yelp
Loved this great little nook in Greenport! Excellent cocktails and amazing staff- the olives on the menu were delicious!
google avatar

Joseph K.

Yelp
Wannabe NYC-chic speakeasy/pizzeria. Attitude from the second you walk in the door, from the hostess to the waitstaff. Gourmet pizza with a wide selection of toppings is this restaurant's only saving grace. Really an underwhelming experience. Try any of the other wonderful restaurants on this high foot traffic main strip. Won't be back, wouldn't recommend.
google avatar

Lauren J.

Yelp
This place is such a cool speak easy. It's so dark inside. We would up here three times during our 2 day stay. We only had a white pizza with truffle oil it was great. The drinks are strong and it's really cool that the owner serves you so you know there's thought and care going into your service. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Steven L.

Yelp
Fast service friendly service, great pizza, great to walk into a place without a mask again. We appreciate you taking that stance.
google avatar

Liz O.

Yelp
Go here now! The pizza and drinks are amazing. I'm from queens and I can't find a cocktail this good near me. Great artisan pizza, the specials have always been awesome. The New York Sour is one of the best I've ever had. The French 75 as well. Drinks are well made and strong. Will be back everytime out here!
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Good Marg Pizza, get the meatballs with ricotta Cocktails were fine
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
This is probably the coolest bar I've been to on Long Island. It's tiny and can get crowded, and you're paying $10+ for a cocktail, but it's so so SO worth it. The bartenders are knowledgeable and crazy talented- they will spend more time on your cocktail than you're used to, but your patience pays off in an expertly crafted, crazy delicious drink. The Northside Collins is my jam in the summer, but they do some seriously funky stuff there. The decor is funky. (There's a taxidermy fox somewhere in there?) It is definitely dark, but duh, it's underground. If you're hungry, get a meatball. I am dead serious. Go to this speakeasy, order a fancy cocktail, order the meatballs. You won't be sorry.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
5 *? Well, that was the best new pizza I've had in a long while. Not sure why it pops up as this name?
google avatar

Dacia Ericka B.

Yelp
The best pizza I've ever had. Yumm it was delicious and mouth watering. We had the Red pie topped hot cherry peppers and meatballs and a separate serving of meatballs A M A Z I N G. The olives were perfectly marinated and the drinks were so good. The Barbadian drink was great and the strawberry margarita. Alright it's very dark because at night it's a bar, it's actually a great place to hang out and relax. The bartender/server was great. I'm looking forward to coming back

Resa C.

Yelp
Love this place. Was visiting Orient and heard about Brix and Rye. It's under an empty looking store front near the American Beech hotel in Greenport NY. Once you walk in there is shuffleboard on your right and the stairs to the bar are on the left. You feel like you are in a speakeasy basement. The lighting is very dark. I needed help seeing the drink menu. They are master mixers here. My husband loved his old fashion and I enjoyed my Mai tai too. The food menu comes from the pizza place upstairs next to the hotel as well. It was so good we ate it twice that week we were there. The appetizer meatballs were delicious. For pizzas you can order one of there ideas like the clam and garlic pie or you can create your own like I did with artichoke and prosciutto on the red pie. They also do white pizzas if that's your pleasure. The crust is thin and crisp- soooo yummy. You won't be disappointed. Loved the bartenders. They have great personalities and work very hard. Shuffle board was a lot of fun too. Go check it out.

Yelp
I love this little spot. Its my favorite little bar in Greenport. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is cool, the drinks are solid (they have a boozy eggnog concoction that will knock your socks off), and the food is terrific. The food is from the pizza parlor upstairs and is outstanding. Shit, if you don't want to drink the food is enough reason to go this joint. You won't be disappointed.
