When I'm in New York City, I make it a point to experience local joys - like enjoying a bagel on a crisp fall Saturday morning. And there are few better places to get a bagel in NYC than Brooklyn Bagels.
Fortunately, there was a Brooklyn Bagels location along the route of my morning stroll, and I stopped by a few minutes before 10 am. There was a long line but it moved quickly.
I asked the young gentleman at the counter what type of bagel I should get with my Classic (sliced nova salmon, scallion cream cheese, tomato, red onion and capers); I don't like Everything bagels as they don't taste like anything!
"Sesame is my favorite," he responded. Sold! For $15.95!! As I wound my way back to the front to pay for and pick up my Classic, I checked out the varieties of cream cheese and bagels they were serving. A fresh batch of strawberry cream cheese was slid in front of me as I was taking my picture. This is one amazing hustling bustling well-oiled operation!
There was no place to sit, so I took my bagel to go. At the nearby Madison Square Park, I unpacked and saw how HUGE it was. I decided to eat half and save the rest for lunch.
The Classic didn't blow my socks off. It was a bit dry and the bagel was not as fresh and chewy as I expected. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it, watching happy families with young kids in strollers, dogs frolicking at the dog park, and a relatively unobstructed view of the Empire State Building in the distance. Another "classic" New York City experience.
