On the Grid : Brooktons Market

"A mere seven miles outside of Ithaca and housed in a building that has been a storefront for over a hundred years, Brookton's Market supplies the hamlet of Brooktondale with local dairy, meat, and produce, as well as pantry essentials. Better yet are the fantastic homemade soups, sandwiches, and dinner specials available to eat in or take home. They host musical evenings, Wednesday dinners, and Sunday brunch. It's a gathering place for the locals - particularly popular for lunch. Often used as a spot for meetings, you might find yourself privy to heated discussions about local issues." - St. John Design Group

Great little sandwich shop/mini grocery/brew pub. Yes, equally all three of those. Sandwiches are a lot of traditional options with fun spins on them. Local breads, grilled/pressed, toasted or fresh - lots of bread options and all of them are great. Love the grilled BLT with turkey and they make one of my favorite tuna melts. The have about 16 beers on tap. Mostly local microbrews, but they have a couple of macros for those that like them. Local taps rotate a bit, but they always have a couple of styles for every palate. If you needed to run to the grocery store, but wanted a sandwiches and a beer instead, have no fear, they have a small grocery store in the back with the basics to get you by. Don't forget to grab some baked goods before you head out. Amazing homemade banana bread, pies and other treats.

Google
Horrible customer service , menu prices are different online than when you arrive to pick up your sandwich . And we were told when handed our sandwiches “I think you forgot to tip your sandwich maker “ . Like what in the world . I’m just not impressed and $15 for a sandwich with no side or a pickle is a tad crazy even in today’s world

Google
Brookton’s Market is a gem in Brooktondale, NY! This friendly local spot has all the charm of a classic general store. The coffee is always top-notch, perfect for a morning pick-me-up, and their selection of delicious food and craft beers on tap makes it a great place to unwind. One of the highlights is Trivia Night on alternate Fridays, which adds a fun, community-driven vibe. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or looking to socialize with friends, Brookton’s Market is the place to be! Highly recommend!

Google
Great place for a local relax after a long day or a good time Saturday night. Sometimes live music, rustic laid back feel and everybody gets along. Just an outside port a potty tho.

Google
Amazing beer selection from across NY state, and great coffee from a nearby toaster. Sandwich was good and spanakopita was good given it was reheated in microwave - would be amazing fresh. Good vibe and friendly service. Would recommend if you’re nearby or in Ithaca

Google
Really like this local market. Lots of sandwich options, lots of vegetarian options. Good beer selection. Coffee, teas, and hot chocolate too. In addition to a large sandwich collection, there's also lots of fresh foods you can chose from, and some baked goods. Small grocery store as well. Free Bingo on Monday nights, win prizes (prizes are free items in the store - free coffee, free cookie, etc). Free trivia on Friday nights. Outdoor seating when the weather is nice! This place has it all!

Google
A charming old general store off the beaten path with an excellent selection of craft beers on tap. Excellent service! You can even find Fiz soda here.

Google
A little old time country store with a good selection of local beers on tap, wines and cider brews. I’m just there for a delicious salad and keep the seat warm til the crowds come back for the happenings. This is one of my happy place(s) in near Ithaca.

Yelp
All of it. Great place to hang and enjoy! All about community and friends! The best beer, baked goods, and home cooked meals on Wednesdays! Need milk, bread, last minute somethings? You'll find it here!

Yelp
Convenient but an expensive option. Cute and lots of variety but I think the mark up is a bit high. Great place for an emergency item. Good quality bakery items and sandwiches. It's always busy and filled with locals. You will definitely run into a neighbor or make a new friend.

Yelp
a bit off the beaten path but worth a visit, good coffee and pastry with a hippie vibe in an old general store setting

Yelp
Today was sadly my first and last trip to Brookton's Market. I've lived in the area for over a decade but was ashamed to say I'd never stopped in. A friend had suggested we meet there for lunch. The friend ended up needing to cancel last minute but since I was already there I figured I'd stop in for some local shopping. I gathered up some vegetables, bread, and packs of frozen local organic beef -- over $60 worth of groceries -- and I stood in line waiting to check out. The place was empty but it took a while for the cashier to get to me because the people before me in line were having a friendly chat with her, and she also had to make and deliver a sandwich to someone sitting outside. But I didn't mind at all. This is a tiny local market/cafe with one employee working. I wasn't in a rush. However, when it was time for me to check out, the cashier wholly ignored me and instead walked over to a couple who had arrived long after i had to order sandwiches, and asked them what they'd like to eat. She had seen me waiting there for a while with an armful of groceries, but for some reason thought that I'd be happy to wait even longer while she served people who had come in after me. Why?? I know I don't really look like a local, but I'm not used to being discriminated against in Brooktondale because of it. Strange. If a business doesn't want my money, I have no reason to beg them to take it. I put back all my groceries and left without spending a dime. And on my drive home, I realized there's a reason I do my grocery shopping at Wegmans and Greenstar: I've never had a cashier there walk away from me when it was my turn to check out, treating me like I'm invisible.

Yelp
I go there all the time the BLT is my favorite and I love walking there with my friends I very much recommend also the staff is very kind and nice

Yelp
The place is adorable, great to come with a friend or a book. The food is good enough. I'm really glad it's there.

Yelp
Great local spot for a few groceries or a beer. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming.

Yelp
Brookton's Market's location is so remote from Ithaca that when I went with my friend in the evening, we both thought we might have taken the wrong turn given how dark everything was lol. Carol's Medley was pretty good with ham. The sweetness from the apple helps cut the saltiness from the ham, and getting it grilled with whole grain definitely makes it yummier. If it were closer, I think I would go more often. What was super nice about this place was how helpful and friendly the people there were. I was low on gas when I arrived and really scared that I might not make it to a gas station before I ran out. The person working there gave me directions to the closest gas stations, but also offered to come and get me (and deliver gas to me) if I really did run out before I could fill up my tank. On a more important note, because the place is so remote, cell phone signal is really bad, and the free wifi available there really helps haha.

Yelp
Awesome place. Good food. Good service. Smells like burnt bread though. I consider it part of the ambience.

Yelp
Five stars for what it is and what it does ***** Absolutely fantastic sandwiches and coffee. The baked goods are also terrific. We ordered their version of a "Cuban" sandwich and I loved it. Great bread, fresh unprocessed ham, clove/lemon pickles... delicious. The other sandwich featured a homemade sauerkraut - A+++ I love what they are doing here. There are so many good places to eat in the Ithaca area and this place somehow pulls off being very original and completely delicious. The store also has an array of unique drinks, deserts, candies, coffees, soaps, t-shirts, CDB items, gifts and other cool items. The staff are very helpful and friendly. One of my favorite "newer" Ithaca area places. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Used to love this place- but the last few times I've been it's been disappointing. They stop serving food an hour before they close, sometimes two hours before, the mimosas used to contain champagne and are now mostly fruit juice with a splash of champagne. The staff seem annoyed to have patrons even though they are always overly staffed they act with no intention on providing quality customer service we've grown accustomed to. Missing the old staff for sure! Hopefully management makes changes as many have noticed this place take a turn for the worst.

Yelp
Terrific sandwiches, local products, fresh produce, and coffee. Currently (early 2022) outdoor tent seating. A great place to meet, have some beer or wine, and enjoy beautiful Brooktondale. Worth the side trip off of Rt. 79.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a wonderful comnunity asset. Lots of fresh food, delicious sandwiches and baked goods. Over 20 beers on tap. Big outdoor tent.

Yelp
A hidden gem near Ithaca. Amazing sandwiches with meat from the piggery. Everything I tried was amazing, and the market inside is cute and fun to look around! Definitely worth the drive

Yelp
Been hearing great things about the "Brooktondale Market" for a couple years, and finally made the trip! So glad I did! Arrived right before closing, but the owner was so gracious and friendly. Didn't rush us, even asked if we'd like to have our dessert to eat in instead of takeout. It's a great little place with everything you could need convenience-store-wise, combined with almost everything you could want in a natural food market! How is that possible? Even had a gluten free section. And natural hand soap! And local ice cream! And organic mangoes! Fresh baked goods were absolutely delicious. Atmosphere is warm and homey. Reminds me of a cross between a coffee shop and a camp store. Feels like you're relaxing on vacation when you're there. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Awesome little market! Great beer and made to order sandwiches! Breakfast, lunch, dinner...and in normal times, great bar/nightlife vibe!

Yelp
Great local market with essential groceries and more! Great sandwiches, coffee, and beer on tap! Lots of outdoor, heated seating during COVID.

Yelp
Amazing food, suuuper nice staff, good music, and WiFi. I also enjoyed their great selection of teas.

Yelp
3 employees. Took over 30 minutes (see Kay S. review) to make 2 sliced bread "panninis"...$15 (no sides or chips)..No organization..chaotic..2 sandwiches to go! They made food out of order which caused a further delay. Did not seem to have anything prepped for the one person actually making sandwiches...others were washing dishes...should have helped to make sandwiches. (They were tasty) it was a BAD experience. I agree Banke A with the sanitary conditions, cashier (handling money) stuck her hand in the chip bag to add chips to a plate without a glove then decided to grab a tomato from the grocery shelf and slice it and add to sandwiches - again, without gloves. I wish we never stopped there.
google avatar

Mela S.

Yelp
Seriously cute as a button, but our sandwiches took an extremely long time to make (there was no one ahead of us). I appreciate a leisurely pace and wasn't expecting it to be lickety split, but even at that, it was slow. And when we started eating, one of the sandwiches had a prodigiously long black hair, presumably from the woman who made it, melted right in. That ended that experience. Now, I realize that statistically speaking, we all eat things we don't know about and don't want to know about. But a hairnet would have likely prevented this gross-out. I'm sure they can do better (and likely will)--hence 3 stars instead of 1. I would give them another shot, for sure.

Yelp
stopped in here, with friends who had been here before, and loved it, to hear live music, grab a bite to eat, and have a beer. I'm not sure where to start...so I'm just going to put it out there.... GO HERE NOW! I actually loved everything about this place! Outdoor seating; really, really good food; excellent, interesting beer menu complete with a very knowledgeable and friendly server; cute local goods (aromatherapy oils, etc) for sale, groceries, and clean rest rooms, too start! Like I said, just go here and find out for yourself!
google avatar

Elissa P.

Yelp
Friendly staff and delicious homemade pastries. Long hours which is nice and wide selection of events for adults and kids. Perfect for a neighborhood store. Good place to pickup a needed grocery item. I'd like to try more soups but they often run out too early in the day. Can you make a little more soup?
google avatar

Denise K.

Yelp
My brother and sister in law introduced us to this cute place. We went swimming down the street at a waterfall and walked down the street to Brooktons Market. We loved the local beer and wine selections. We enjoyed our drinks outside while listening to a small band play. The staff are very nice and the pastries looked amazing. This was a must stop for us on our trip. I would recommend this place if you are visiting the Ithaca area.

Mackenzie T.

Yelp
My favorite place to go for a quick grocery trip or a sweet snack! Their baked goods are to die for and their customer service is always great!

Bridget T.

Yelp
I will never return here. The older woman who appeared to run the place had r.b.f and was rude with her demeanor and words towards myself and my daughter . I didnt have my glasses on and their menu is on wall so she couldn't be more annoyed with my questions. I did order a sandwich which was ok. My daughter wouldn't eat it cause of the woman. Plus overpriced. But for a experience that I thought we would have by such a cute looking place I wouldn't of mind the cost. Dont bother with this place and dont suggest.

Kesley G.

Yelp
Great place to grab a cold beer and relax outside. We live nearby, so it's very convenient to even grab some groceries.
google avatar

Curtis B.

Yelp
Great sandwiches, amazing beer selection. Super nice little convenience store. Loved in Brooktondale for 9 years and this was one of our frequent stops.

Tera H.

Yelp
The people here are rude and unkind. The items are over priced, which would be fine because I love supporting small businesses, but they show no appreciation to customers and are rude. Every time. I'll never spend my money here again.

Seymore R.

Yelp
This is a super place! What a find! Very eclectic. Everyone is calm and friendly. 22 quality beers/hard cider on tap. The food is unique and top notch. Live music on a Thursday night. Dog friendly. Indoor and outdoor seating. Moderately priced, but I got a good value for my money.
google avatar

Tchukon S.

Yelp
This place is fantastic ... I only wish they had a location in my hometown! Second day in a row we have visited and food is tasty with a nice selection of cold drink and delicious coffee. Save room for dessert because you don't want to missed the homemade cakes and cookies!
google avatar

Margarita I.

Yelp
A very nice grocery store / cafe offering tasty paninis and baked goods with outdoor sitting, on a cute little crossroad. Very friendly and relaxed staff, in a true Ithaca style. Fair prices.
google avatar

Juliette M.

Yelp
I rarely shopped here, I'm rating based on their food. This was one of my favorite lunch places to go to that few other Cornell students knew about. I always made up my own panini (on the French peasant bread) and added apple and avocado and it was delicious. They also often have really great desserts. And the Mediterranean spinach triangle!! Absolutely delicious. The service is incredibly slow so I wouldn't come here if you're in a rush, but I personally came here to relax and get away from the rest of Ithaca and it was exactly what I needed.

John H.

Yelp
Brookton's Market is a very special place at the heart of a special community. A favorite destination for bicyclists from Ithaca, and anyone enjoying live music, friendly staff, and great food. Also a terrific selection of beer on tap! Sorry to hear a reviewer had a bad experience with a waiter there, but I'm guessing it was a misunderstanding. I've been going for years, and have never seen anything but cordial and friendly treatment of all customers by the staff there. Really a friendly place, welcoming to regulars and visitors to the community!
google avatar

Joshua S.

Yelp
I'm not sure what the person who wrote the bad review is talking about. The people who work at this store treat it like home, cooking homemade deli items and great lunch sandwiches. The prices may be higher on some items, but family owned mom and pop stores like this are becoming increasingly rare; and the price difference is negligible. I hope this store is able to survive, it's an invaluable addition to the community.
google avatar

Keith H.

Yelp
It's so nice to have a community market. In addition to having a surprisingly diverse stock for such a small place, they have picnic tables out front, make sandwiches, and always have a few handmade salads, cakes, pastas, etc. Their prices are a little higher than what you would find at a big store in town, but I figure for the gas and stress it saves me it's well worth an extra couple bucks. In addition to all that, Brookton's Market is a community gathering place and a supporter of the local art scene. I cannot say enough about this little store. Shop local!
google avatar

Pam G.

Yelp
I am so glad this market is here, it is fantastic. The selection is limited but they always seem to have just what I need. They have fresh coffee, breakfast and lunch made to order, and one dinner a week. There is a good selection of fresh produce and some local produce when available. Dog food, cat food, toilet paper, chips, bread, soda, juice. They stock mostly local meats, which are going to be more expensive than factory farmed meats but it is so much better for your health. Prices are very reasonable considering they don't get the high volume discounts that other stores do. It is a great place that builds community relationships, great to have a public wifi spot. Oh and they have beer too, good beer.

Sujata G.

Yelp
I like the blueberry muffins - they will warm them up for you if you want. Nothing better than a nice little lunch at the Brookton's Market on a sunny Saturday. In summer you can sit outside and people watch in the country. In winter its bright and warm inside with lots of tables and books and coffee. They also have a great selection of grocery items. They carry a lot of local farmer's stuff. They buy garlic from my husband sometimes and always pay fair prices, which is unheard of in a grocery store these days. Small groceries in particular have such a small profit margin, I think it is really awesome that this one is committed to doing right by their local farmers. There are lots of different products and prices in the grocery store and the deli, so there is something for everyone. And lots of good beer. The bottom line is it is wonderful.
google avatar

Matthew S.

Yelp
I love this place. Fantastic hot pressed sandwiches and salads. The fresh food is affordable. But everything else is upscale. Slightly higher prices than a larger store, but a lot of organic and local food.

Banke A.

Yelp
I had the most horrible experience at what was once my favorite sandwich eatery in Ithaca. While checking out, the cashier made a snide remark to me regarding my tip amount. I tried brushing the remark away, and finished my purchase transaction and took my food outside to eat. His comment bothered me to the point where I couldn't eat my food, so I decide to ask the cashier what he meant by his remark. I discreetly asked to speak with the cashier, and when I asked what his intention was when he made the comment, he flipped out and claimed that he never said such a thing. He continued to deny it and made a big scene. I was thoroughly disappointed and disgusted by the cashier's snide remark and, later on, his blatant denial and abhorrent display. At that point, I decided to return my food for a full refund. The lack of honesty, dignity, and terrible customer experience has made it so that I will never return here or recommend this market to anyone.
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
Great little country market. Lots of local food & products. I love the local crafts inside.

Rebecca L.

Yelp
I count myself lucky to live near this charming market! From yummy cheeses to craft beer to more practical items I always seem to find something unexpected that is just right. I really loved the outdoor drive in movies in the summer, I hope they keep that up!

Dan L.

Yelp
This place is a joke. The service is the worst of any store I have ever been in. Their inventory is limited at best. And they take advantage of being 6 miles away from the nearest store, as evident by the 300% markup on most items. Thats not even their "organic" items, that is the items you would find in any store such as toilet paper or a 2 liter of soda. It is sad to live in Brooktondale and have this store so close but for it to be so frustrating to even go into. Perhaps that is why the community calls it the $5,000 dollar store. I would recommend to anyone that uses this store to save your money and your patience and take the trip to Wegmans- the way stores should be and what Brooktons market can only pretend to be.

Ellyn F.

Yelp
My husband and I were pulled into stopping at this market after seeing a sign on the road about good food and an old fashioned market. We were on a road trip and traveling so we got some items for our trip. The employees were very nice and knowledgeable about the different items. We ate some of our snacks outside on the tables and enjoyed the sunshine. If I had not been traveling we would have purchased the AWESOME looking meat and other items.

Mike V.

Yelp
I love the old country feel of this store. The new owner and the staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. If you ask them about products that they may not carry, they really look into adding them to the store's merchandise. They have the absolute best tasting gluten free bread. They serve it on their sandwiches and also sell it frozen. It's a great place to stop for breakfast and sit in the cafe, where it has Wi Fi. They are also beginning to have coffee shop type bands come in and play. This is a very friendly place which makes us proud to be Brooktondale residents.
